Post by The Great Unbearded One »

HURRAH! THE BAFTA'S ARE ON!!! :D :P 8)

I'm watching them now and the categories are a bit fierce this year, but still it's a very very enterianing award ceremony.

Who else is/had/did/was going to watch them and what did they think?

It won best SFX, I'm still waiting for the BEST PICTURE award.

Charlie Kaufman just won the award for best screen adaptation for, guess, Adaptation! Then due to him not being there, Meryl Streep accepted it with an award acceptance speech he wrote, and it had me pissing myself laughing!

Unfortunatly PJ did not win Best Director and TTT did not win Best Film. The Best Director went to Ronan Pilosky (sp) and the best film was the film he directed -The Pianist. So, we await the Oscars to see if TTT wins Best Picture. However, I feel that Return Of The King shall wipe the board.

What's Polanski done since he had his wife star as Lillith in The Ninth Gate?

Yes, statutory rape as I recall. But the courts and Hollywood tend to be mutually exclusive. He can win an Oscar, yes, but if he comes to the ceremony he's getting arrested.

However, since BAFTA's in the UK, I don't think the US has any jurisdiction.

Apparently there isn't any statute of limitations on that type of charge?

He was already convicted but fled the country before serving any sentence.

But still, I think making a film would still be a bit of a risky deal for a fugitive. Then again, he didnt infact turn upto the awards....hmmm. lol!

Yeah. He can still make the film, have it processed and edited in Australia or something, but entering the country is no.

Is anyone else getting fed up with these holocaust stories always winning best picture?

Well, it does seem that academies do go for the more 'sentimental' heart-string-jerking stuff. Beautiful Mind, The Pianist, Schindlers List etc. However they were good films, but the bit that sometimes pisses me right off is the directing award. I dont believe that Ron Howard should have won Best Director over Peter Jackson... and so on. Also, there is the generation gap of the academy voters. I didnt think that The Pianist was best picture, however some of the members of the academy may have infact fought in the war, or had people close who did and so that would have influenced their choice.

I dont know if I'm making my point entirely clearly, but I hope you get the jist of it.

Good point, but I almost believe that anyone who made a story that centered around the holocaust would get best picture.
