This is a video, broken down in several parts, is of Shirley Phelps-Roper along with two of her daughters speaking with a Journalism 102 class (although it’s held in a math class for space) at Central Michigan University as a demonstration of how people in America push the boundaries of the 1st Amendment.
I found a lot of the content in this video very illuminating. The opening of the video is Shirley talking about how their church started out with their protests and how it evolved from there. This is probably the hardest part of all the videos to get through because I felt she was sugar coating her side of it and being genuinely dishonest about how her group likely handled the incidents she refers to. She refers to her dad several times as “colorful” and in the context she’s referring to, I suspect most reasonable people would interpret “colorful” as “asshole”.
When it really gets interesting is when the Q&A session begins. The teacher poses a couple questions first then turns it over to the students for further questions. I will point out that I had to double check that this was indeed supposed to be a University because most of the questions provided by the students border on moronic and half way through these videos I was convinced this had to be a High School.
I will say after watching these videos in their entirety, I was rather surprised. I feel that Shirley demonstrated much more consistency in thought than I would have believed her capable of. I feel that the Shirley reads and interprets the bible as many on this board do. She seems to admit that the God of the Bible is hateful, vengeful , contemptuous, and jealous but the difference is that she still chooses to believe it. She seems to not gloss over the unpalatable portions of the Bible that typical Christians like to ignore but fully considers them when weighing her beliefs which include the threat of eternal damnation and hellfire.
Sadly, she didn’t seem to get any informed atheists in the room that probably could have really taken her to task. But some of the questions she was asked prompted utterly surprising answers.
In part 4 right around 3:25 a student says the he doesn’t believe in gay marriage but he thinks homosexuality is ok. Shirley’s response is nearly jaw dropping. "You stinking hypocrite. What kind of pig are you? You're going to let them be gay but you're not going to let them marry? Where do you get that rationale, that standard? That stinking hypocritical standard..."
Wha? Not what I expected.All in all if you can get past who you’re actually watching this is an interesting video.
