Space Rangers on GOG $9.99-opinions on game please

Post by Jade Falcon »

Anyone got any opinions on this game? It's up on GOG for $9.99 and it looks interesting...

If I recall right, I've seen Stark mention this, or Space Rangers 2 and there seems to have been some positive comments which is a rare enough occurence. :)

The game never got a general retail release in the UK, so I don't really have any background info on it. I suppose that means there's a possibility of Space Rangers 2 also appearing.

Buy the Space Rangers 2 'complete' for a bit more. They're basically the same, but the game would be a pain in the ass without Space Google. :)

EDIT - you can get it on Impulse and other DD places, I believe. I'll have to reinstall Impulse to check the price.

Yeah, Spac Ragnars 2 is $10 on Impulse. 'Complete' (ie, with the translated patch they chrage you for) it's $20. A significantly better game than the first. Only Elite-em-up you need to own.

One of the discussions in GOG's forums mentioned that one of the Space Rangers packs, either Space Rangers 2, or Space Rangers Reboot actually had the first and second games though they didn't make that particularly clear. I had just noticed at something like 2am this morning and basically couldn't be arsed to go through a 7 page thread. I do remember you mentioning this game, it did get compared there as a cross between Elite and a space version of Pirates.

SR2 'reboot' is the last patch they released in Russia. It wasn't translated/released in the West until relatively recently, and it adds a bunch of good shit (more content, more parts, a way more sophisticated Space Google, more late-game stuff to do with your money, etc). When the game originally came out Cinemaware owned the distribution and they only released the first two patches, which is what you get in 'Space Rangers 2'.

Since its fuck all money, I'd suggest you get the complete business if you're going to play. You can treat the base version as a $10 demo, though; some people don't like the way combat works.

BTW don't go into combat with an industry laser. :D

This game looks interesting. But I'm busy with the Witcher atm. :)

But for $20 it sounds like a steal.

I'll check out Impulse then. :) I don't imagine there's any DRM in the D2D versions, I heard some of the original hardcopies came with Starforce.

An Industry laser, that sounds vaguely familiar, though in the old Elite, a Mining laser could be better than a Military laser as it didn't drain your weapons energy banks as quickly, but obviously that's not the same here. :)

Its just a bad translation. The game has a charmingly spotty translation from Russian, which the manual attempts to spin as 'Space English', the way people talk in the future. It's great. Industry lasers are just 'industrial lasers' not meant for combat.

Amusingly, the Polish translation is very neat and clean. Which is kind of strange when most translations from English contain a hilarious number of obviously wrong phrases and words...

I am really happy they didn't 'fix' the translation with the Reboot, because I like the pidgin English. :) Is the Polish version from the English or the Russian?

I think it's from teh Russian, but I'd have to check. As I wrote, it's surprising it's so clean ; Other games have monsters like going from English ".50 cal gun" to Polish for "50mm cannon". I have no idea why that's the case (especially since it was a totally low-budget release: as I wrote, the equivalent of 2 dollars in retail)
