Even in F3 the laser pistol was total cheese with crits. Now its balls (but at least there's heaps of ammo). Way to go, the high tech gun is the spray and pray gun with no special ammo! lol.

The carbine is just a better hunting rifle. The service rifle is shit. The All-American (from vault 34) is hilarious, but needing 100 guns = fuck off.

Apparently its not uncommon for this to happen, either. I had to load a few times to make sure I wasnt' forced to aggro the NCR over it.

It's not. I had something similar happen to me where I got jumped by the three dogs upon exiting helios 1 and after killing them I somehow became NCR public enemy #1.

Yeah, Laser guns are shit. I got my Energy Weapons up to a respectable level last night and before I went into Vault 3 (accessed from the South Vegas Ruins) I went into this old Neon Sign place and found a named Fiend called Duke, who was wearing a Metal Helmet.

The laser rilfe had absolutely no effect on his fucking head for repeated shots - the DT was too high. Then I switched to my scoped hunting rifle and killed him in one shot.

Maybe if I modify the shit out of this damn laser rifle.

I couldn't believe it when I got a laser rifle up to 50% and it's doing a whole 7 damage. I guess they tried to balance it from the insta-kill crits, and instead made them totally useless against anyone with armour.

Instead, y'know, of just making them rare, or wear or fast, or difficult to find ammo for, or whatever.

And holy shit, the recharging rifle? What a piece of shit. I bought it cause I figured no ammo = good, but it takes abotu 12 shots to do what a single varmint rifle does. Useless.

The laser rifle is shit in large part because of the mod system. It has a +damage mod and a tri-beam mod and a scope mod, so I guess the thinking was that making a weapon that buffable would make it insanely overpowered if the /base/ weapon was any good. That, of course, is really dumb. Max-charge ammo also does a lot to solve the damage issue, particularly for heavier weapons (Helloooo YCS/186 Gauss Rifle running Max-Charge).
Also, the mod system is shit. I want a night scope on my /sniper rifle/ thank you very much. Fuck off, Varmint Useless.

The recharging pistol is actually more powerful than the rifle.

Again though the only reason the varmint rifle becomes useless is because of the DT system. I know complaining about combat balance in a Beth game is crazy, but there you are.

I found a mod for it that vastly improves the DPS. I think it was an upmodded Breeder or something. Basically, it allowed for 6 more shots before recharge cycle...something like that. Anyway, I think if it was modded properly it'd actually be a good weapon. the most off-putting part of it for me was the weight (15.00 I think)

Yeah it's heavy, and it's expensive to fix, and without jury rigging it's a pain... and since you never acutally run out of bullets, its role is useless.

Hell, the one time I had less than 100 556 I just broke down 300 minigun rounds and made more.

Heh, I just buy more ammo (5mm ammo is what I didn't have much of, since I was riding the Assault Carbine for ages). Not like you can run out of cash so long as you've got your companions to carry all your phat lewt.

It's a sniper rifle you can get through a lockpick(requires 100) case you open. Combine it with Handloader .308 ammo and you 1-2 shot anything.

And ammo weight is funny because laser/plasma weapon ammo is heavy. Bullets? You're still carrying enough to kill armies.

Hehe - that reminds me, I've been playing without the MTUI mod. Insanity when looking through the "Aid" list. I might try Hardcore on subsequent playthrough just to make food/ water less of a stimpack substitute. Seriously, I just eat/drink a shitload of crap rather than use stimpacks - save them for combat. And of course stimpacks heal over time in combat, so that should make things harder.

Re: the Vault 11 bug, luckily it didn't have any effect on my game - I'm already on The House Always Wins Part 3. Right now I'm just sidequesting to Level 30 and getting everything I want before I continue the main plot. So much to do, the game's crammed with quests compared to FO3. And the fact you can't max all your stats / skills to 10/ 100 is good, even if you're like me and game the skill books so you don't waste any points.

The only problem is Food/Water take a long time to do anything unless you fast travel a lot. Sleep is the same problem.

Hardcore essentially has you get annoyed at a few more bars, avoid some areas because your healing won't save your level 5 ass against superdeathfly or Deathclaws(so you take them on at level 10 with your gun of doom choice) and gives you a shiny achievement because you chose "More annoying mode" then regular.

It was interesting before I realized how easy the supposed challenges could be circumvented.

Lasers are described as being good at beam spam but low damage, while plasma is the opposite. As for why either exists when all you need is Ratslayer and the Mysterious Magnum (maybe a grenade machinegun, the usefulness of which I also question) is beyond me.

I keep thinking I've found everything, then I see an empty triangle or some across another quest. Level 30, got the House path done, gonna do the Independent and NCR on this save, then do a minimalist run to get the Legion ending.

Also, Fiends vs 2 people in Power armor with power fists = lulz.

Nobody should ever take a single idea from Resident Evil.

The inventory system should just be presented in a less stupid way, there should be less redundant/useless items, more selections should be automatic, and the idea of 'encumberance' needs to be re-examined at the basic level.

Frankly, having 'hardcore mode' in a game that is in no may constructed for 'simulationist' play is just lame, even if the setting supported it ... which it doesn't.
