Never heared of this series before but it looks excellent. Checking out the first episodes as I'm writing it and it looks like I got to see it all
Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
I was thinking it would be a good idea to compile some information on acceleration of LoGH ships. I'm pretty sure we could make a good estimate based on 13th fleet standing off just outside the range of Thor's hammer when they we're sent to capture it and the image they show us when Mittermeyer is taunting the nobles at Geiesburg. The first tells us they need 30min to get everyone inside and perhaps we could estimate the range of the Thor's hammer from the latter example, considering how closely matched the armament on both forts are.

Mission accomplished againNever heared of this series before but it looks excellent. Checking out the first episodes as I'm writing it and it looks like I got to see it all
As always, make sure you watch My Conquest Is A Sea of Stars and Overture to a New War before watching the main series.
And don't read the battles in the thread unless you want some pretty major spoilers - at this stage, read them after Episode 26, which is what I'm up to here
I'm going to slow down updates to one per month, since I really want the screencaps to be DVD quality and the fansubs of the DVDs are only up to episode 50, and are released at the rate of 4 per month.

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
Oh I though Overture was after episode 55 or something. That explains why there seems to be quite a gap in the story when watching episode 1 after a Sea of Stars.Vympel wrote:Never heared of this series before but it looks excellent. There'll still be a large cap. My Conquest was a prequel. Overture is just the first two episodes done really, really better.

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
Basically, it's Gaiden -> Conquest -> Overture/Episodes 1-2 -> Rest of the series.
Though I think one of Gaiden's stories is set between Conquest and Overture. I'd have to double-check.

I thought Reinhard got the Brunhild during Gaiden, which would put it before Conquest.

SAMAS is correct, one of the Gaiden's Season 1 arcs, called "Dishonor", is set in between Conquest and Overture- its the one that focuses on Kircheis by himself. But I would watch it after the main series with the rest of the Gaiden.

After seeing the first 2 movies and 10 episodes, consider me hooked. I like how there is no clear Good vs Evil, just good guys and assholes fighting other good guys and assholes, the level of background story and politics and those little details (eg how the imperial uniforms look at first sight the same, but you'll notice subtle differences for each rank).
Oh yeah, and battles remind me a lot of EVE blob warfare. Even the battlestations reminds me of EVE's POS's

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
Yeah its awesome being able to tell the rank of a character by sight. Its a bit harder to do for the Alliance because their rank is a very small lapel pin on their collar, but you just need to wait for a good closeup

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
Actually, there are a grand total of two, maybe three Bad Guys in the series:
Rudolf von Goldenbaum and De Villain- er DeViler, Arch-Bishop of the Earth Cult.
The third is arguably Job Trunhit. Though he's more like Supreme Asshole.

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
I think there's more than that. Cornelia Windsor was pretty nakedly evil in her willingness to throw millions of lives away in an attempt to secure her political career. Rupert Kesselink's craven ambition led him to attempt murder on Rubinski, who was himself willing to kill a lot of people in his last grasps for power and eventually decided to just take as many people down with him as he could. Braunschweig ordered a nuclear bombardment on an entire colony in response to one of his relatives being killed in an uprising. Andrew Fork might be disqualified by his brain problems (seriously the dude got so angry at being confronted that he went blind and collapsed) but even he was basically seeking glory at the expense of millions of others. I'm sure there are other examples.
There's plenty of clearly bad people in the series.

Oh, nitpick on the Alliance Civil War post: it's not the Heinessen system, it's the Barlat system.

That's a product of me not knowing that when they say "Starzone" they mean "System".
(subtitles always say "Starzone", I thought that meant 'sector' or something)

Yeah, it's kind of weird. I was unsure about it for awhile myself, but I think there's an episode where they mention that Heinessen's sun is named Barlat.

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
So how does this compares against other sci-fi energy weapons? Isn't it too low compared to what's seen on screen (eg Thor's Hammer instantaniously vaping a vast fleet) or am I wrong? (I suck at physics).a hard X-Ray beam weapon with a power output of 740 terawatts
Edit: and I got to ignore those damn wiki links. Seen too many spoilers already

A hard X-ray weapon capable of producing a flux of 740 terawatts per square metre at some arbitrary range sounds more accurate to me.

Hi. I've been brought to the series by a combination of factors (this is one of them), and I have a specific LoGH question. I'm looking for the episode that explains how Mittermeyer and Reuenthal met Reinhard originally; can anyone remember which episode that is?
Whoo. That's rough. That would work... though given the sheer scale of the volume saturated by the weapon, it implies a pretty damned impressive level of firepower. If they could just collimate the thing better, it'd probably be up in the Star Wars/40k energy scale for overall intensity.Ryan Thunder wrote:A hard X-ray weapon capable of producing a flux of 740 terawatts per square metre at some arbitrary range sounds more accurate to me.

So this isn't a mistranslation? 6 million km seems a lot more than what we see visually in the show.Luring them in, Lutz waited until they were within 6 million km, and returned fire to devastating effect
Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
It's not. In a Battle at the Doria starzone, 13th fleet opens up on the 11th fleet at a range of 6.4 light seconds which is little under 2 million km. These are examples where range is stated on screen.wautd wrote:So this isn't a mistranslation? 6 million km seems a lot more than what we see visually in the show.Luring them in, Lutz waited until they were within 6 million km, and returned fire to devastating effect

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
What do you mean? In that battle there's no indication when Littenheim fires (or when Lutz fires back) that the enemy fleet is closer. Same when Yang catches the 11th fleet's flank in Episode 21, which Gunhead refers to. Of course they may get closer as the battle continues, but that's a matter of tactics. Opening ranges are extreme.wautd wrote:So this isn't a mistranslation? 6 million km seems a lot more than what we see visually in the show.Luring them in, Lutz waited until they were within 6 million km, and returned fire to devastating effect

Have you seen the episode before, or those leading up to it? If not, don't by any means watch it, you'll be spoiled immediately.

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
I just assumed as such due to the fact that most battles so far appeared to happen between visual range to extreme close range, but I havn't really paid attention to the opening ranges of those particular battles.Vympel wrote:What do you mean? I understand, and have a fair guess as to what some of the spoilers will be; this stuff is all on Wikipedia and I've been researching the actual characters as characters for reasons of my own. Which is pretty much my entire reason for wanting to see the bit I mentioned in the first place.
Maybe I can prevail upon a friend to spot the chunk of the episode where all this happens, now that it's been definitively nailed down, while avoiding any particularly spoilerrific bits around it.

Re: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Battles (Spoilers)
Fair enough.
Problem is there's so much stuff, especially about Mittermeyer and Reuental (the two most 'fleshed out' of Reinhard's Admirals) scattered throughout the series, there's little substitute for seeing the whole thing in a single sitting and just making notes as you go. But in terms of the spoiler, looking at Wikipedia's list of characters, you probably wouldn't know what it is (or maybe you do, but don't know when) so yeah, be very careful.
