No, these people now think that they are doing them a a favour. In fact, if this ever occurred to them, they probably are ready for it because any harm made will end up in a lawsuit that they plan to win.

You're assuming that they survive whatever retribution the victims inflict on them, or that, with their modus operandi being so famous, the victims won't employ all sorts of dirty tricks to ensure the clan doesn't get away with ruining their funeral.

Because let's face it, the Phelps clan literally gets away with with their emotional and verbal bullshit. It's only a matter of time before it all crashes down on them.

They're planning on protesting the funerals of children? I mean, showing up and trying to ruin the funeral of any loved one with their religious garbage is bad enough, but planning on showing up and spouting their nonsense during the funeral of a child is another level of disgusting. That's why I think they're playing with fire. It's bad enough to attend a funeral of a soldier, but somehow the death of an adult doesn't carry the sheer visceral emotional reaction as that of a child. The little coffin, the tiny grave, the knowledge of ruined potential, the sheer innocence destroyed by cold cruelty of the world, etc.

It's just another level of devastating ; It may be that nothing happens, but it's possible they will just barely push some grieving parents over the edge. Hopefully nothing serious will come out of it, but knowing these assholes, they will probably sue for assault the moment they think they can. Then again, people can take violent revenge for lesser slights ; Especially since the Phelpsians are planning to attack the entire state of Oklahoma as ungodly, which triggers people's tribalistic instincts.

It certainy has the potential to get really, really ugly. All it will take is a spark.

I think that Fighting Words Doctrine might apply to protesting a child's funeral, though I am not a lawyer and can't say for certain that it would.

I do agree with you, though: they might legally be okay, but if they keep teasing an angry dog, they will be bitten eventually.
