Men of War: Assault Squad open Beta

Post by wautd »

For who don't know Men of War, it's a WW2 strategy/tactics game with high realism, extremely detailed, no base building and a direct control option in case you think you can drive that tank better yourself. They now have an open beta available for their upcoming standalone expansion wwhich enables you to play USA vs Germany multiplayer games.

Sign up and download from Steam
Men of War: Assault Squad is the new title in the "Men of War" series. This stand-alone expansion takes place across the globe during the height of World War II and features a completely new cooperative skirmish game mode with access to five different nations (Russia, Germany, USA, Commonwealth and – for the first time ever in the Men of War series – Japan) as well as increased realism and accessibility. The expansion pack will deliver fans and newcomers an intense new WW2 spectacle with almost limitless replayability.

Like previous games in the series, Men of War: Assault Squad includes the unique “direct control” feature which enables players to maneuver units using the directional keys, rather than pointing and clicking. PC Generals can get behind the controls of a tank to smash through obstacles, crush soldiers under its tracks and fire armor-piercing shells at enemy emplacements, or take control of individual soldiers as they fight.

What makes the new skirmish game mode so unique?

* Different historical settings and battlegrounds for every nation will ensure that each time players will face a different variety of enemies and tactics.
* Unique hero units for every nation with powerful abilities such as increasing units’ firepower, boosting morale or providing other advantages to defeat the enemy against all odds.
* Fantastic bonus abilities such as remote controlled bombs that can flatten entire residential blocks, airstrikes able to destroy incoming tank columns, special "For the Motherland!" charge attacks and many more.
* Improved and dynamic AI ensures that no two games will play out the same way, making each battle a new experience against an AI that really fights back.
* Improved and dynamic AI ensures that no two games will play out the same way, making each battle a new experience against an AI that really fights back.
* Choose from a variety of scenario locations ranging from Western Europe, to Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Pacific.
* The ability to play this impressive game mode with up to four friends in LAN or cooperative online play.

More new features

* New multiplayer maps and game settings.
* Improved multiplayer balancing to provide a more authentic use of equipment and vehicles.
* Overhauled infantry squads and the ability to buy individual soldiers to suit players’ needs.
* More realistic weapon behavior and penetration values.
* A reworked artillery system that provides innovative assault and defense strategies.
* New types of ammunition that increase the depth of tank combat.

The balance is better and they fixed the rampant problems with artillery spam and super heavy tanks winning maps all by themselves. So it's now massively superior to the MoW and it even comes with a co-op mode now. Which is saying a lot because MoW's multiplayer was already fantastic if broken balance wise.

It also looks better and appearance wise is actually superior to CoH by now. I've literally been waiting for them to release Assault Squad so I can uninstall Company of Heroes and never have to play it again.

Does it have TA and a Q menu?

Also lol at wanking to 'accuracy' and 'for the motherland charges'. Can't they just admit realism would make a shit game?

I don't know if its a bug or not, but in skirmish when you call in reinforcements, it wont always go to you. Really bizarre, tanks will become owned by allies and shit, and sometimes infantry squads will get split up.

Other than that, its pretty great.

stark, the only thing that says accuracy there is penetration values. probably about shit like shermans (a cheaper medium tank) penetrating upper tier mediums tanks from across the map. And the fact that they mention shit like hero units, special abilities, etc means they pretty much realize the proper place of realism.

Oh yeah for sure; Hawx wouldn't be interested in it if it was a commander's cupola simulator like the Combat Mission games. Its just daft that 'realism' is a positive bullet point even in genres where its actually really bad. :)

They just market the game to simhard nerds because they know a substantial portion of their audience is those people. I think the "reworked artillery system innovative assault/defense" strategies was the most hilarious term. Literally all they changed was imposing a barrage limitation on artillery so guys couldn't just direct control a 25pdr and have it snipe tanks from across the map anymore.
Does it have TA and a Q menu?
Nope. The game places artillery directly under the control of the player. As far as I know air support still hasn't been included. Unfortunately no their isn't a Q menu. The closest thing they have is a generic "highlight" or "attention here" button.

I noticed that too. I had the feeling I wa buying units for my crappy ally the whole time. Anyway, I take the Assault Zones over Skirmish anyway.

Not in the beta.
If you mean the original game, yes there was. Although it was heavily scripted I quite enjoyed it.

I wonder if the AI on multi skirmish is the same as normal skirmish?

Either way, i'll be looking forward to that, and better multi.

I also hope they fix their shitty lobby ui.

Woah, as early tanks go, I recommend saving points to get the Panzer IV ausf. F1. I used to underestimate this one, but it's simply brutal against anything but heavy armor. Hell, its low velocity gun makes it even possible to lob your shells over a hill or building, acting like an armored mobile artillery tank. In my most recent game, I think this bastard killed about 50 bad guys, 2 field guns, a HMG, a Bofors AA, a half track and a truck before an M10 took it down. :)

It turns out low velocity assault guns were way, way more useful against 90% of the targets a tank would encounter in its lifetime. Which is why I tend to laugh at guys going "silly sherman and your shitty main gun".

Sorry, someone has to say it- This is the worst game title ever.

Men of War: Assault Squad? Really? That's what you came up with? Let's predict some other games this company will poo out:

Bus Drivers: Driving busses
Cashiers: Late Shift Adventures
Cowboys: Dudes in Hats

Come on.

They're a Russian Garage Developer and 1C is their distribution company. I don't think giving the game an epic sounding name was part of their business plan. :)

Is anyone else experiencing connection issues with the beta? My friend can't connect to anyone and while I can, as soon as I quit the game my computer loses all Internet connection until I restart.

The only thing I have is most games show a NAT issue exclamation mark, but I can still join and play them without problems.

Man, I had a weird game last night. In a 4vs4 game, not only was I completely unopposed to take the left flank, people pretty much completely ignored me for the rest of the game. The only losses worth a damn was when the ammo rack of a Tiger wreck mushroom clouded a complete assault squad. The rest of the game I was just sitting back relaxed and taking potshots at anything that moved from my Jagdpanther at a safe distance*
I kinda wished they did try to attack my position though. I had it riddled with hidden infantry, sandbags, AT mines, AP mines and kill zones. It would have been glorious.

*PS how do you reload tanks? I assume with an ammo track but honest to god I still havn't found out
