Here's the problem for the Democrats: they couldn't get elected WITH that platform. The moderates who control the outcomes of elections in this country LIKE welfare reform, are in favor of the war, and recognize that a "living wage" would increase unemployment and drive small businesses into bankruptcy. Bush has done the exact same thing Clinton did to the Republicans for his entire term. If the dems go to the middle, their piss off their grassroots base and Bush steals all their issues. They're in a shit position, and I don't feel the least bit sorry for them, because MY side was in the exact same fix for 8 years.

Red nailed it on the head; despite the delusions of some of the more extreme liberals, you just can't win elections on the far left anymore, which is why the Democrats have to find another left-center candidate, or better yet a Clinton type "conservative" Democrat if they want to win the Presidency. But I would not count on that happening anytime soon.

Bush appeals to the lowest common denominator, and that's why he'll win come the next elections. Despite how the republican lites bow down to Bush constantly, I don't think they can offer anyone who can sink lower than shrub.

The only thing that sucks about being an indy is that in a lot of places you can't vote in primaries. I can only vote in the General Elections.

And if Al Sharpton gets nominated by the Dems, I'm voting Nader. At least then no matter who wins I can say I didn't vote for 'em, and it ain't my fault we got a jackass President.

Yeah, because the "welfare bum voting bloc" isn't the lowest common denominator.

There is none lower. Bush may court fundies, but many at least work. Typically, the more productive members of society - the ones who pay the VAST bulk of the taxes - vote Republican, the less productive vote Democratic.

Well, we already know who's going to be the front-runner for the Republicans. But the Democrats have people lining up in droves to have a go at Shrub. Unfortunately, the Democrats don't really have the sort of strong canidate needed to upset him.

It all depends on how this Iraq thing goes. If he cheaply stomps on Iraq and is lauded a hero, then he'll cruise into office for a second term. However, if things sour for him (for example, the costs of the war pushing the American economy into a deeper slump,) then a Democrat will sneak by.

But if Bush wins, here's what's gonna happen:

A) Colin Powell will likely decline a second term as Secretary of State.

B) Bush will probably try to waffle on the issue of replacing Ashcroft until after the election . . . where he'll keep him where he is because heck . . . he's got his second term. He won't have to worry about being reelected President again.

All we really have going for us is Bruce Springsteen offers excellent PR in the form of his anthems too us. Then again so do most of the old Country Western types....

The best canidate suggested for the Democrats is John McCain and he has said over and over again that he's not switching parties.
