Inception: The Game

Post by adam_grif »

Nolan talks about an Inception video game.

tl;dr - Nolan confirmed that a game is in development set in the Inception unvierse, but that it will not be the events of the movie.

I'm thinking that it would be ideal for an RPG/TPS, possibly cribbing elements from Echochrome. It would be really sweet if you played each level of a multilayer dream, where the highest level would be played for 30 seconds, then you would play the next level for 10 minutes. The 30 second top layer would generate a "track" of modifications and warping to the subsequent layer, i.e. you're in a car and your swerving, this results in gravity going wonky in the lower level of the dream at the corresponding times.

The other main wrench thrown into the formula would be the ability to manipulate levels if it was your dream, something only briefly touched on in the film. Echochrome is a great little game with some similar concepts, where the geometry of the level changes based on the perspective you shift the camera to.

But I have a sinking feeling it's going to be a completely linear shooter to appeal to the dudebro crowd with predefined setpieces. Inception was already pretty video-gamey to begin with. It already has an in-universe justification for the endlessly respawning mooks that all look the same :P
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.

At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.

The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'

'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

I actually feel like Inception is pretty prime video game material as long as they don't make it Call of Duty Ripoff #265. Weapon mods and guns and tacticooliness will be welcome and all that shit. The game really needs to make use of the artistic license and throw in some interesting mechanics. Especially with the multiple dream levels and paradoxes and shit. Then it'll be awesome.

It's also a very good decision not to directly tie it to the movie. Allows the designers creative breathing room.
Best care anywhere.

It's going to suck until they prove me wrong, video game movie tie-ins almost universally suck. It's like a rule or something.

How much influence (if any) is Nolan personally going to have on what goes into the game? I see him as having a bit too much intelligence and self-respect to voluntarily turn his film into a generic shooter.

Probably next to nothing. Voice Actors rarely have influence on more than trivial aspects of the important parts.

Well, erm, there's, er, GoldenEye. From 1997. And I hear that the Avatar game was okayish. So, uh, yeah.

Still, I guess that as the developers don't have to rush to get the game out with the movie this time, which is the main reason why these types of games are crap, there may be a glimmer of hope.

Video Game movies can be completely awesome, they generally go wrong when the movie execs creatively strangle the game devs and insist on having the game released on the same day as the film. Which is most of the time.

Goldeneye 007 is the posterchild for a good movie-game, and it was good because it was not on a strict schedule, coming out years after the film did. The same goes for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2. That game also was not totally based on the films, but was set in the universe. This is the other good approach to movie-games.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was another great example of that approach. Don't forget about Spiderman 2, which was by no means horrible either.

Granted, the majority of movie-games do suck, but I feel that this one has potential, for reasons I've already stated. It's a bit premature to be calling it one way or another, so I'll be waiting for actual details about the game.

I actually enjoyed the first Spider-man movie game as well, it wasn't a perfect game but as gamecube friendly games went it was pretty good.

Hah, I remember having fun running around as the Green Goblin which you unlocked after finishing the game the first time. But S2 was just better, the web-swinging mechanics in particular were just great.

You could make an intelligent and abstrat strategy game out if it with your eyes closed, but my money is on dialog driven horror like Deus Ex.

I think he means "[a] dialogue driven horror". Not actually suggesting it was part of the horror genre.

It sure was horrible, however. Keep up

And yeah I bet it'll try to communicate the strangeness through conversations instead of interaction or unconventional thinking.

They should hire bioware.

Is BWOMM onomatopoeia or an acronym for something?

Unless I missed something critically important, Christopher Nolan is not a voice actor.

Haha, he probably confused him for Nolan North.

I didn't bother clicking your link and you never specified which Nolan it was.

I think it should go without saying, but if done right, this has the potential to be one of the best games of all time.

Imagine the scene where a MC is fighting a mook in the stairwell, gets chased down the stairs, goes back up, and pushes the mook off of the now revealed breach of geometry.

Getting the controls for something like that would be a pain in the ass, but it would be wonderful.

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester
