Applications and 127.0.0.1

Post by TrailerParkJawa »

Some applications like IE, Kazaa, and others open a port at the 127.0.0.1 loop-back address.

My guess is that this is so you can run ads that the application gets from the internet. Is this a good guess or is it something else.

The only thing Ive ever used that address for loop back purposes.

Some apps are modular and the various pieces were written to communicate with each other via a network connection, perhaps for portability or ease of modular development. When the resulting app is stitched together, it needs a loopback port so its various pieces can talk to each other.

Not saying this is necessary the case in the examples you mentioned, but I've worked with software before that was like this.

It could be for any kind of inter-module communication within the application. There's no reason to think that it has any specific connection to capitalism delivery.
