It would be interesting to go to Germany, give them information on the future, and use German resources to a make a new country somewhere while blowing up the RAF for Germany. If Germany doesn't agree, then they get nuked.

And why the hell would they do that?

I think you're trying a bit too hard to live up to your name, CN. At best they may remain neutral and try to find a way home, but if they were going to side with anybody, they are going to side with the Allies, specifically the United States. They're all Americans themselves, after all.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'
'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

I just think that would try to form my own country. As long as that's my goal, it would be good to have Germany alive so that the Allies and Axis can beat the shit out of each other while I sit and do nothing.
Re: You're Captain Yelland of the USS Nimitz and...
And how are you going to form your own country? Yeah sure you can beat the crap out of any nation on earth for a while but what happens when your stores of weapons and spares runs out? You are going to be pretty screwed then and there will be people wanting revenge.Chaotic Neutral wrote:I just think that would try to form my own country. You'll be a dictator for all of two seconds when your XO either arrests you or puts a bullet through your skull. Just because you're in command doesn't mean your subordinates will follow a course of action that they would clearly find wrong.

Re: You're Captain Yelland of the USS Nimitz and...
On a serious note, the most reasonable course of action (in terms of minimising crew and contemporaneous casualties and avoiding international incidents) would be:
1) Broadcast raid warning the morning of Peal Harbor to Hawaii. Hell, get a pair of Tomcats to do a low level supersonic flight over Honolulu. If that doesn't get everyone's arse into gear, nothing will. In the meantime, setup a picket on territorial waters so that any Japanese military aircraft crossing the boundary get splashed. If you wanted to be really pragmatic, you could wait for the first wave to go in before you committed to action just to make sure that you didn't start it. In the meantime, your Intruders are already en route to the Japanese fleet and are ready to start dropping 1000lb bombs onto them.
2) Once that's dealt with, run up a white flag alongside the US flag and sail into Pearl while broadcasting loud and clear that you aren't looking to start some shit. Hell, sending in a chopper ahead of time to land and negotiate this with the authorities is an even better option.
3) Watch amused as rivers of drool pour from every mouth in Washington at the idea of how quickly these wars can be ended through judicious use of this material.

You try to do that then your crew and officers are not going to be under even a remote pretext of being required to actually follow your orders. Even if the Nimitz crew went rogue, why the shit would they help Nazi Germany? It'd be like...you know what, I can't even think of a comparison. I cannot think of anything less likely than the crew of an American aircraft carrier siding with Nazi Germany in order to prolong World War II. That's literally--literally--the stupidest idea in the entire world.

I figure that even knocking out one Japanese CV would be enough to force the IJN taskforce to turn around. If a high-flying turbojet aircraft flies by and takes out, say, the Akagi in a deliberate and unambigious manner they would know that the jig is up(in addition this buys time to get comtemporay assets in Pearl up and running whilst the Nimitz tries to convince Kimmel who they are).weemadando wrote:On a serious note, the most reasonable course of action (in terms of minimising crew and contemporaneous casualties and avoiding international incidents) would be:

Has anyone given any thought about changing the time line in general once this War business is all over with?
You know things like staying out of South American and installing dictators, or avoiding that nasty Vietnam business, or that it may really, really be a good idea to keep Stalin from starting a communist party in China?

We only installed one dictator in South America and that was in Chile. Most of the dictator installments were in central America. I have no idea why people keep on confusing the two.
Also, as Lonestar implied, the Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921 before Stalin was general secretary.

Yeah, deeply sorry about the historical mist-step there, but It is something worth considering in terms of what we could do to make history a bit better, but like you say one thing at a time.Lonestar wrote:IN fact, the KMT was represented at global communist congresses, not the communist party of China.Samuel wrote:We only installed one dictator in South America and that was in Chile. Although one thing to consider is that the Nimitiz itself is going to be a ticking timebomb i terms of changing things. I mean there is what, around 5000 peole in the crew? Each oe of them with general knowledge of the future, each one perhaps has somethign that would want to change...
The war will only last so long, once over what would we do with the crew? How would you ensure theres not 5000 some people leaving to try and change things?

And how many 052C+/D DDGs and 054A frigates should we give it. And what about a replenishment ship? And submarines?

Oooh! I do like the sound of this. And how many nuclear weapons would be in this Chinese fleet's arsenal? Any sizable amphibious troop force with them?
If the Chinese were smart in this instance, they'd let the Japanese do their thing. Perhaps with historical knowledge, they might be able to bushwhack the returning American carriers, if they want to risk provoking the wrath of the United States, or they may do it cleanly enough with rather more modern submarines

Japan controls all the ports. I seriously doubt Nationalist China is up to the task of supplying a Chinese carrier.
On the topic of hurting the US... given the brutality of the Japanese Empire and the fact it continues advancing until the end of the war I think the crew might want to stop them as soon as possible, the easiest way being to level Tokyo.

Re: You're Captain Yelland of the USS Nimitz and...
Japan was using chemical and biological weapons against China throughout the Second World War. People still die every year in China from finding piles of chemical weapons the Japanese dumped when they withdrew in 1945. If a PLAN carrier had nukes, which is likely but not a given especially early in the operational career of the vessel then they’d nuke Tokyo and the other major Japanese cities without hesitation. Certainly they have no rational reason to do so.

I have a question that is sort-of related to this but I don't think it's worth starting a new thread:
Why is it just called the USS Nimitz?
When other USN ships named after people include first names (JFK, Harry Truman, John Stennis, Carl Vinson and so on), why isnt it the USS Chester Nimitz?
