North Korea has fired a missile into the Sea of Japan placing South Korea's military on alert, a defence ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman says there were no details immediately available about the type of missile fired or about its range.

"The only information we have is that a missile was fired from an unknown location in North Korea into the East Sea (Sea of Japan)," he said.

"We are trying to determine whether it was designed to test a new missile or just part of an exercise by North Korea troops."

The ministry refused to confirm a report by South Korea's JoongAng Ilbo newspaper that a ground-to-ship missile launched by North Korea fell into the sea 60 kilometres off the east coast of North Korea's South Hamgyong province.

North Korea agreed to a moratorium on missile testing after it caused international alarm in 1998 when it test-fired a Taepodong ballistic missile over north-eastern Japan into the Pacific Ocean.

News of the missile firing emerged as senior world figures including US Secretary of State Colin Powell gathered in South Korea for the inauguration new President Roh Moo-hyun.

The nuclear crisis deepened in January when North Korea pulled out of the nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty and then threatened to resume missile testing.

Washington says it is looking into reports North Korea had fired a missile.

An administration official who declined to be identified says the US believes "this was a launch of a shorter range tactical missile," not a ballistic one.
And the Japanese and South Koreans were shitting themselves... Nothing like people who are good at the game of brinkmanship.

I heard it was a SSM and they gave notice a few days ago of the test. I guess we are gonna have to wait and see in the next day or two as things clear up.

Just a few minutes the there was news on the radio that the NK's are saying American recon planes have entered NK airspace over the last few days.

I really hope, the NK's dont completely lose their touch with reality.

I think the NK leader has lost ALL touch with reality. He's been playing this game of threatening to breach the armistice agreement and saber rattling before, but this time he has his closest neighbors scared rather than the US. I just hope China can belly up to the bar and make NK see the light.
It startled him even more when just after he was awarded the Galactic Institute's Prize for Extreme Cleverness he got lynched by a rampaging mob of respectable physicists who had finally realized that the one thing they really couldn't stand was a smart ass. - The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy

My personal theory is that the North Koreans just are intentionally intimidating their neighbours.... although they might also provoke them.

Those people are insane. They have no allies, their people are starving, their whole country could be wiped out in a heartbeat, and yet they still pull this bullshit.

Perhaps we could make a deal with China. We invade from the south, they invade from the north, and we meet up in the middle somewhere. We let South Korea take control of the penninsula and unify the two halves. For China's part, they get to take credit for liberating the starving North Koreans, and get a new ally in the new Korean government. They will also be happy that after 50 years, the U.S. can finally go home.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

A bit of the old pot calling the kettle black considering that a NK plane flew into SK airspace a little while ago.

I had heard it approached but didn't enter SK airspace, turning a few miles away from the line...though I probably heard wrong anyway. I don't pay much attention to televised news, and the paper didn't have anything on it that I could find.
