That's not true. 3/4ths of Americans support repealing the ban. For most Democrats, it's almost a non-issue. The vocal opponents would never have voted for a Democrat anyways.Broomstick wrote:Or it could have motivated a few more voters to come out and vote against them, as this issue is quite divisive among Democrats.SancheztheWhaler wrote:About fucking time... too bad the Democrats lacked the spine to do this before the election. You are forgetting that there are large segments of traditionally democratic groups that are also usually anti-homosexual, such as African-Americans, Catholics, and so on who are quite vehement in their opposition to homosexuality. Most of those who approve of supporting the ban are not so energetic as to exert themselves strongly on the matter, but those who oppose it, whether Democrat or Republican, tend to be VERY vocal and energetic. Squeaky wheel gets the attention.

We'll never now know, will we? Since the Democrats were too spineless to actually govern, and instead of loudly yelling obstruction every time the Republicans attempted to filibuster and making sure the entire country knew who was responsible for the bullshit of the past two years and the Bush administration, they collectively bent over and took it.
Besides, if Obama or the Democrats had both balls and intelligence, they would have repealed DADT on January 21, 2009. That way they could have pointed to it as a campaign promise kept, as well as ensuring enough time would pass for idiots to forget about it.

African-Americans supported a repeal of DADT in greater numbers than white evangelicals. Catholics supported the repeal in greater numbers than any other Christian group, and the numbers were very similar between white and Latino Catholics. Hell, even conservative Democrats supported the repeal as much as Catholics in general did.Broomstick wrote:You are forgetting that there are large segments of traditionally democratic groups that are also usually anti-homosexual, such as African-Americans, Catholics, and so on who are quite vehement in their opposition to homosexuality. Yeah, there weren't any actual Republicans in the Senate in January '09, nor any Blue Dogs like Manchin who would break ranks to stop cloture from going through, so this is 100% a failure of the Democratic leadership and Barack Hussein Zerobama the Repthuglikkkan in Democrat's clothing.SancheztheWhaler wrote:We'll never now know, will we? Re: DADT is history
Credit where credit is due. Congratulations to the Democrats for doing something good. Where the hell was their collective spine for all this time?

Healthcare = Obamacare Nazi/socialist/communist/fascist/Muslim conspiracy
Economy = Obama's fault
TARP = Obama's fault
Afghanistan = Obama's war
Iraq = Obama's war
and the list goes on. The Republicans were out there every single day changing history and telling their made up versions of the story, while the Democrats sat quietly and made no serious effort at telling their side of the story. It's as if Coca-Cola were to just let Pepsi tell people Coke tasted like shit and poisoned people without responding. Eventually, with the story being repeated enough times, even usually smart people will start believing it.

Well, I am a 20th Century relic...
I'll take it as a positive development. Right now, we need some positive things in life.

How often people forget that that is on our currency."We are not a nation that says 'don't ask, don't tell. We are a nation that says 'out of many, we are one.' "
EDIT: I might add that when same-sex partner benefits come, and they will, it will be difficult not because of the whole "Gays can't get married in most states" thing, but because TPTB aren't going to like PFCs Smuckatelli and Sparky deciding that they are gay so they can get out of the barracks(in other words, a housing allowance).
(Before someone says something smartass, I'd like to point out that scam marriages are common, or at least perceived to be, in the military)
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

About Fucking time. Still, the democrats, while spineless, do get a bit more flack then they deserve.
