Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam

Post by Logical Mike »

Just downloaded this today. It sports a hefty price tag at 1200 MSP's and requires the BC2 game to play. In addition it it roughly 1.7 gigs for those of you still sporting the smaller hard drives.

Okay necessary info aside I have to say this may be the best team based FPS to hit the XBOX in a long time if not ever. Yes it's still only 12v12 on the gimped console side of the line but it feels much bigger. Coming out of the tunnels on Hill 137 and seeing a mountain that just sustained a napalm hit still smoking with embers ablaze while also noting enemy movement and defensive positions to your squad is breathtaking.

The weapons are solid and typical of the era, M16, AK47, M14, etc, and the RPG handles about how you'd expect it to IRL with bad flight patterns and long reloads. The vehicles are limited (hey it's vietnam, you want a huge tank battle? Grab 1942) but all handle well.

I'm not a PC gamer anymore, but I'd love to know if they expanded the map size and number of players per side on that interation?

Anyway, IGN gave it a 9.5. If you're interested in trying out a new take on Vietnam that isn't shit ass BLOPS, give it a shot.

I'm really impressed, especially for the price. It plays differently enough to be worth it and incorporates a lot of improvements I think were needed. The BC2 formula was already solid, but for $20 you can't knock what is nearly a completely new MP game.

Agreed, and in addition vanilla BC2 map pack 7 was released free of charge a short while ago with 3 new maps 2 of which are armor intensive.

So if you haven't played this in a while, now's a good time to get back inro it.

Oh and there is something to be said about blaring "Flight of the Valkyrie" in the Huey while landing directly on an enemy asshat using the flamethrower! :-)

Fuck! I tried to pull down MP7 but it didn't work for some reason... maybe I was still in the middle of the Vietnam update.

Its interesting to me that they took such a self-consciously 'old fashioned' take on Vietnam (right to the news-report style briefing screens), which gives it an atmosphere and flow I haven't seen since crazy old Vietcong back in the day.

Had same issue, had to go back to xbox startup menu and poof they were there.

I suggest you hit Harvest Day right off, fantastic open field tank combat right off the rip. Nothing like hiding behind cover and looking over to see 3 heavy tanks coming up the road.

Oh and found a great way to dispense the acheivement whoring flamethrower [homophobic slur removed - Lagmonster].... M16 from 20 feet away = you win every time.

Are you telling me that the radios from Battlefield: Vietnam are back? That was literally the best thing about that game, just driving around while listening to the soundtrack to Good Morning, Vietnam blaring.

Nope, it's akin to 1943. Only multi.

I just threw a grenade that skipped off a hill and directly into a Huey's side door, killing 3 bad guys. Even got a 6am "ohhhhhhh" from a squaddie. Fun times!

Battlefield Vietnam had the same feel on it's expansion maps. Nothing compared to what the PR and FH2 people use for their loadout screens but hey if they want to take a great idea from the community I'm all four it.

However I feel sad for you console players. It hard to play a battlefield game unless it's at least 16 on 16, 32 on 32 is better, 64 on 64 is even better. The more players you stack the less individual skill matters and the more teamwork matters.

I agree. I love the concept of battleground Europe (100% mmfps sim) and would love to play it, however I don't have enough time nor the rig to try it out.

Only thing console has going for it is ease to find and play a game in 15 minutes total.

Should've done Fortunate Son for the classic BF Vietnam feel. :P

That's why I said you should've been listening to Fortunate Son instead of Flight of the Valkyrie so you can get the feel of the very first Battlefield Vietnam Trailer with the line of Hueys taking off in succession. :)

Edit: Oh shit, I just saw the launch Trailer compare the two.

The opening shots of the Huey in BC2 Vietnam's launch trailer are clearly referencing the original. That's a really nice detail to add the nostalgia vibe to the game.

Thinking about the music, there is something to be said about the raw tension when you're holding down a base in rush and you hear Fortunate Son gaining volume in the background.

It's good for a DLC but as usual, my biggest complaint with the series remains the lack of golden opportunities taken. They could have opted to do something like introduce new gameplay mechanics but took the safe route. It's too bad because the core design of the game is excellent.

It's also probably just me, but I still want to see more vehicles in these games. A jeep, a helicopter, and a tank, eh. Doesn't feel as varied as the weapon design does. Why not have a randomized vehicle spawn system? This time you get an M48/Sheridan/M60/Walker Bulldog take it or leave it.

Is anyone else getting wierd problems with Vietnam? JSF has been crashed to the desktop, I've had my in-game sound (ie not dash or game announcer) go away, etc.

Yeah, I hadn't had any problems until last night, and we ran into all kinds of wierd shit. I thought my sub had exploded or something, but once the round ended all the scoreboard/announcer sound worked fine. JSF had to restart his box entirely.

i'm on PC, but i just tried and had weird problems as well. Most sound effects worked fine except the reloading sounds, which only seemed to happen sometimes The tt-33 never got effects. And sometimes my zoom would autoadjust back to normal?
