Gaming in the New Year

Post by Chardok »

Well, here we are. Another year in gaming down, a new one arrived. Last year at this time, we were all drooling for Mass Effect 2 and this year we've got...Dead Space 2. Meh. 2010 was an awesome year for us gamers, slamming us with amazing experiences all year long. A steady pounding of "Whoa!" After "JEEZ!" after "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!". Barely a month went by before we were smacked in the face with a new, awesome game. the outlook for 2011 is decidedly more traditional in the release schedule (That is, a fairly dry first half, with holidays stacked with amazingness)

So my question is, aside from ME3 (which will be, I'm sure, universally SQUEEEEEEEEEE'd), what games are you most looking forward to this year and why?

For me it's - very little. I'm excited for ME3, and even then only because I want to see how my story will end (also, there is 10% chance it will actually release on time). Maybe I'm overlooking some random obscure game that's coming out which I forgot about but this year is looking very poo when it comes to new releases.

The only releases I'm mildly excited about are:

Warriors: Legends of Troy (Hey, it's KOEI, so I'm there.)
Rage - The Hype machine has got me looking forward to this one
Elder Scrolls Skyrim - I'd be more excited about this one, except that I know i KNOW there is exactly 0% chance it will actually release on schedule.

Gears 3 should be an obvious gimme. Given how much of a Yakuza fangirl I am now I'm also looking forward to Yakuza 4. Another one that I doubt most people here are going to be aware of or care about is the Third Birthday on the PSP, a sequel to the 10 year old Parasite Eve games, and I've also preordered the Witcher 2. I also plan on picking up Ghost Trick on the DS to fit my minimum one game per year quota on that system given how little is being released on it. That's about all I can think of for the moment.

Elder Scrolls Skyrim is an obvious choice I'll toss in
Knights of the Old Republic MMO (If it is 2011) and Guildwars 2 (If it is 2011)
As well as....
Max Payne 3
Diablo 3
Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Torchlight II
Portal 2
Finally Duke Nukem Forever because you can't bet on the Duke not to be good, or even to exist.
And I guess Gears of War 3, I'm not looking forward to it, but I am looking forward to the comedy gold that all Gears of Wars games are.

OAN
2010 was a shitty year for MMO's
How bad was it? Best new MMO this year was Final Fantasy 14 which was unmitigated garbage and the voting was not fixed, everything else from Darkfall on down was worse than FFIV.

Fanboy that I am, I'm looking forward to Dragon Age 2, Portal 2, and hopefully KOTOR MMO.

I too was aware of Third Birthday, but then found out it shared 80% of its gameplay mechanics with another S-E offering, Mind Jack. No wonder S-E is in trouble, they're ripping themselves off. Not to mention Third seems to be dropping the bio-horror aspect for the most part, and S-E was unwilling to renew their liscence for title of Parasite Eve in the first place. (Yes, I've read the book and watched the Subtitled Movie, I can see how the games flowed form that.)

What I'm really looking forward too this year are Valkyria Chronicles 3 (PSP), Move Heroes (Sly, Bently, Murry, Rachet, Clank, Jak and Daxter all in the same game? YES PLEASE. Just need to get a PS Move eventually.) and the HD total conversions of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on the PS3 that Team Ico is promising for next winter. I wanna climb those Colossi in HD, dang it!

Other than that, I'll take things as they come. The year is still young and there is plenty of opprotunity for announcing new releases in the coming year.

Not a huge amount wetting my appetite at the moment. Shogun 2, Space Marine and DoW2: Retribution are on the Maaaaayybe list, and I'll probably look at the usual suspects (ME3/GoW3/insertsequalhere) once they appear cheaply.

But you're excited about Rage? At least RFA will have endless scavenger hunts to slam you with amazing experiences all year long. 8)

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3, Space Marine and Armored Core 5 are probably the only games I'm really excited for, if AC5 and SM ever even get a release date. Not looking like an incredibly exciting year overall. Probably going to check out DA2 and GoW3 but neither are "zomg gotta get" titles.

Man, I would get that in a damn heartbeat if I had a PSP. I loved PE1&2 and I hadn't even heard of this.
Edit: Oh man, Maya Sakamoto is voicing Aya.

DWG3 is apparently slower than the other two, so I'm a bit wary. At least it looks the business.

Whoa, Ando, I didn't realise Subversion was anywhere near a release. I'd totally forgotten about it! :D

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Guild Wars 2

Granted, both of those haven't been confirmed for a 2011 release yet.

This isn't going to be an active year for me playing the newest releases week after week, I'll just catch up on whatever I missed out on last year if I get bored. I still have a backlog to finish.

I wonder why RPS put Subversion on the 2011; the 2011 date is very old, progress on the game is very slow, and the last update was months ago and was pre-alpha. Optimism?

Two games i'm counting on this year haven't even really been announced yet. I'm just sort of hoping someone confirms whether or not they even exist. World in Conflict 2 and whatever the next Planetside will be.

Gears of War 3 is obvious, and Deus Ex 3 looks vaguely interesting.
Best care anywhere.

Pff. I like the sandboxy building smashy bits of RFG. RFA is underground, and it'll feel all constricted and monster-shooty. It just looks like it'll be too much of a departure from what I liked so much about RFG so...not excited.

You think Rage isn't going to have massive collecty parts to it? Look at the footage! Of COURSE you're going to have to find a bajillion bolts to upgrade your card or metal scrap to make new armor or "letters from home" with a "unique" side-story (ala Sadie's Story from ODST)

What I'm looking forward to:

Ace Attorney Investigations 2 (More Edgeworth goodness. I hope this one has a segment where you play as Franziska)
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (From the same writer as Ace Attorney, in fact. The Nintendo Channel demo got me hooked on the concept)
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (Seems to be the definitive version gameplay-wise, and this one's getting a sweet Alexander O. Smith localization *drool*)
Pokemon Black and White (Damn, gonna have to hurry up and finish Soul Silver)
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation (After IX owned my soul I'm more resolved than ever to go play the older ones)
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Duh, it's Zelda)
Don't hate; appreciate!

RIP Eddie.

Wait, what? A version control system is a game now?

If you paid attention you'd know what people were talking about? Unless there's secret infoz I doubt it'll be out this year anyway. Maybe Introversion will port Defcon to 360 instead.

Wow, I didn't even know that game was in existence. The last game to slip under my radar to that extent was Pokemon Gold, I literally didn't even know that game existed until I opened it for Christmas (granted I was 8). Best Christmas Ever.

I'd assume so. But damn if it isn't the game that is right up my alley from everything I've read. A tactical espionage game that looks to have a planning / execution conceptual mix of The Sting, early Rainbow 6, bits of Uplink and all of it, procedurally generated? Ok so all that worries me, a lot. But you gotta have faith.

Yeah, it'll be out in Japan this February, which will hopefully give Capcom enough time to bring it over by the end of the year.
