Ever since word of a "Spider-Man" reboot was announced, fans have been hungry for any scrap of info about the movie. How will this version differ from Sam Raimi’s hugely successful franchise? How will Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker stack up against Toby Maguire's? Today, we get an early look at the upcoming flick. Check out the pic below.
The photo, the first released from the movie, shows Parker in Spider-Man's iconic red and blue suit sans mask. His face has been scuffed up and his suit, which is more textured and less sculpted than in Spidey's previous incarnation, looks a bit worse for wear.
Garfield, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his turn in “The Social Network,” admits to being daunted playing the legendary web-slinger.
"I see it as a massive challenge in many ways," he told Details magazine. "To make it authentic. To make the character live and breathe in a new way. The audience already has a relationship with many different incarnations of the character. I do, as well. I'm probably going to be the guy in the movie theater shouting abuse at myself. But I have to let that go. No turning back. And I wouldn't want to."
We'll have to wait until 2012 to see if Garfield manages to deliver the goods.

Bad lighting, partial picture and no mask so I'm withholding judgement but for now, I'm decidedly underwhelmed.

Is it just me, or is the Spider icon at an angle for no really discernible reason?

Seriously. Steve Ditko's Spidey always had a bit of a scrawny look about him. John Romita Sr. and subsequent artists bulked him up a bit, giving him a more heroic feel.Stofsk wrote:Which is kind of like Peter Parker in Amazing Fantasy #15.Guardsman Bass wrote:He looks all of 14 years old, and kind of wimpy in the costume.

I think if they're going for a reboot he does fit the early spider man pretty well.

True, but Maguire didn't really look scrawny, in the way that this Spidey does.Stofsk wrote:Which is kind of like Peter Parker in Amazing Fantasy #15.Guardsman Bass wrote:He looks all of 14 years old, and kind of wimpy in the costume.

As long as they don't make him whiny and emo it seems to be an improvement. Same here. My question is why? Why do they need to tell the origin story again?Stofsk wrote:It's a reboot, yes? My bet is it'll be an origin story.
Tim Burton's 'Batman'. Batman WAS. What's with the desperate desire to retell the origin story when the vast majority of people who are going to see that movie know the origin story by heart anyway and the rest likely couldn't possibly care less?

As for the scrawny-ness, we have a Peter Parker that actually looks teenage. That's a shock. It works if this is an origin story.

I don't like the new dark and edgy look of the suit. Tobey McGuire's suit was more recognizably Spidermany and shit.

Hate to break it to you, but Tim Burton's Batman was an origin story, it just wasn't the conventional "we're going to start at point A, before Bruce Wayne was Batman." It was just told via flashbacks, and Batman had only recently started his war on crime.Batman wrote:Same here. My question is why? Actually, as a six year old, who had a couple comics and had seen some of the Adam West Batman/Super Friends, I didn't know what the heck Batman's origin was until I saw the Tim Burton movie. Batman's origin was one that needed to be retold when that film came out as you had many people in the public whose only exposure to Batman was the Adam West show.
That said, I don't think Spider-Man's origin needs to be rammed down our throats and take 30 minutes of the film. Just have a few strategic flashbacks of the spider-bite and Uncle Ben's murder.

I actually always liked that Burton started during his first months on the job and it was an unfolding mystery as to why he was doing this. Burton could have gone into the psychology more (and which Nolan did), but it was a interesting approach.Skylon wrote:Hate to break it to you, but Tim Burton's Batman was an origin story, it just wasn't the conventional "we're going to start at point A, before Bruce Wayne was Batman." Re: First Photo of Andrew Garfield as 'Spider-Man' Revealed
Doing an origin movie Tim Burton style would be fantastic. Have the movie start up well into the character's career with a few relevant flashbacks that eventually tie into the movie's main plot. Unfortunately knowing Hollywood it's never going to happen.JME2 wrote: I actually always liked that Burton started during his first months on the job and it was an unfolding mystery as to why he was doing this. That's exactly my point. It wasn't an origin story. It conveyed the bare bones basics of my origin story in the way you described. It didn't waste a considerable fraction of the movie telling it.Skylon wrote: Hate to break it to you, but Tim Burton's Batman was an origin story, it just wasn't the conventional "we're going to start at point A, before Bruce Wayne was Batman." With great power comes great responsibility.
Oh sorry, just a gag reflex.
Texture wise, looks like McGuire's suit. Style wise, it looks like it is trying to be all edgy and dark. Even today, Parker wouldn't be an emo kid, so I don't know why it looks like they are going that way.
I don't like the changes to the suit's design to try to make it look more modern or whatever.
The actor himself looks like Parker. I guess that is good.
And yeah, it's a reboot, so it will have the origin in it. Unfortunately, Spidey's origin isn't quite as well known as others so it will be back. (You could go without telling Batman's at all with the exception of a couple scenes late in the movie as Burton did.) Plus, it's not like Pete has 20 years from origin to being Spidey like Bats or Supes has, he just became Spidey like two days ago.

I don't understand the suit texture thing they've got going on.
Isn't he supposed to make his own suits on a high-school kid's budget? What the hell would you use to make a suit like that other than a Hollywood costume shop and a few thousand dollars?
