That of a miniscule number of cops murdered on duty, of course. Per capita it's 7 times less than the US for the UK and Poland, and about 10-12 times less for Germany.

Of course the US is more sparsely populated which always makes enforcement more difficult, but the difference is too staggering for that factor to be decisive.
Eternal_Freedom wrote:And I would agree that there is something not quite right with American culture, but I can't articulate exactly what that something is. Can you explain what it is you are thinking of?
Uh...that Americans shoot an awful lot of cops?

Unless there's some genetic trait at work here, it seems that culture is the only real difference.

I rather think the massive poverty in parts of the country, drug wars, slum neighborhoods, gangs, etc. play a deciding factor here. Rather than any fuzzy and subjective "culture" issue.

My apologies, I wasn't sure which post you were answering. I thought you were talking about attitudes to cops and the law. My bad.

Thanas wrote: It could, but it was certainly not meant that way, especially not the hilarious interpretation of "shooting police is a natural thing for an american". What image, pray tell, do you think I have of americans?
I'm not sure of what image you have of americans. It was just a curious statement and I wanted clarification. I admit I did suspect it of an "American sucks" jab that seems to happen quite a bit in threads not about the US.
However, in my opinion, gun violence (and therefore, gun violence against police) is significantly more common in the USA than it is in Germany. I think the figure is something of 32-34 americans killed each day. However I have been unable to find figures for cops killed, so if you could provide these for comparison sake, I would be grateful for that.
Well, your opinion happens to be fact. Something like 30,000 americans are killed by firearms each year, with the majority being suicides. There are something like 75,000 injuries caused by firearms in the US.

Though it should be taken into consideration that the United States has over 310 million people and 800,000 law enforcement officers (police, sheriff, federal, etc). While Germany has population of over 82 million, and 264,000 law enforcement officers.

Here's a website with detailed information of police officers killed in the United States. His Divine Shadow already linked this website but since you asked me I will post it again.

http://www.odmp.org/
That said, I have been able to find figures for Germany.
Thanks for the information.
Anytime a police officer is killed it makes headline national news in Germany. I doubt the same is true for the USA.
You are correct.

Even if we take this into consideration, the per capita occurrence of people shooting at or killing police is still at least 12x as high as in Germany. So I think my original point is aptly illustrated.

What would interest me would be your perspective on why there is such a strong difference. I think social network etc. is a bit of an insufficient explanation, as one would expect people in the USA to have it about 12 times worse than people in Germany, which clearly is not the case.

Um... seriously, Thanas, the dependency between the elements of quality of life is non-linear. The life level can be slightly worse and it could lead to a dramatic increase in police shootings. It could be not even the overall life level par se, but certain elements of the equation (poverty pockets, lack of an adequate social support even in culture etc.).

I believe one of the causes is the high rate of handgun ownership in America. Compare it to Canada, where there are many households with guns but few handguns, and the fact that most of the guns used in crimes

Gah, thank you for catching that. And the fact that most of the gun-related crimes in the United Statres are done with handguns: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/topics/crime/gun-violence/

The US population shoots a lot of cops because in the US the typical criminal committing anything crime wise has a high chance of being armed, from the mass spammer to the murder-robber rapist. It’s just inevitable you’ll have a lot more confrontations with firearms on both sides and that means cops are going to die more often. Frankly I consider the numbers almost irrelevantly low when you consider that the US population owns roughly 200 million small arms. Handguns are used by far the most, rifles and shotguns do show up some. We had a police officer killed in Philly during a bank robbery with an SKS two years ago; though checking that database PA had two people shot and killed vs. five officers killed by vehicles that year so this hardly shows anything about guns specifically.

I would also point out that 2009 was a 50 year LOW for police officer deaths in the US. The numbers went back up a bunch in 2010; but 2008 and 2009 were very low.

Running quick numbers and rounding the number of police deaths up to 200 to make it easy the odds of any given cop dieing in the line of duty from any cause are about five times the odds of any random person in the US being killed by a DUI related accident alone. This strikes me as being way less dangerous then you’d expect, particularly since a significant number of police killed on duty are killed by DUI in the first place.

Might US prison conditions, and sentencing guidelines, play a part in it? The saying "as well hung for a sheep as for a lamb" springs to mind.

To be fair, the firearms per capita difference between the USA and say, Germany or Finland is only three times (90 guns per 100 versus 30 per 100). Not twelve times. Ergo, the presence of firearms alone does not explain the frequent violence.

Now, what does explain it a bit better is the fact that the USA, overall, is a more violent, more polarized and insecure society than the European nations mentioned above, with a powerful and robust criminal element and a vast, poverty-trapped underclass. A necessary addition, obviously, is the ease of getting firearms for the poor underclass and goons, i.e. ordinary, line criminals. Probably this is where the US knows no equals in the First World, although I might be mistaken.

Stas, you assumed a linear relationship between ownership rates and police shooting rates: the difference of 30 guns per 100 people and 90 guns per 100 people may only be three times as high, but it also means that almost every American, on average, is armed or at least has access to a gun. I can see how this can lead (or perhaps be a result of...the relationship is also not clear from that data alone) to a vastly disproportionate amount of violence.

Personally I don't really see that correlation, given that gun crimes are comitted by a tiny, tiny minority of gun owners which can also tie into the same downtrodden social groups that are unique to america (and some eastern european and thirld world countries) rather than american society as a whole, again tying directly into the povery/slums/drug problems as the main factor to my eyes. Canadas relatively low crime rate despite a large and not very secure border to america I think only strenghtens this hypothesis.

Also consider those euro numbers are only legal guns, in most nations you can usually double the number if you want to include illegal+legal guns.

Have you got a source for that? I don't know if any law-enforcement agencies keep statistics on this, but it's a reasonable supposition that a high percentage of the unlicensed firearms used in crimes were originally purchased legitimately before passing into other hands, with or without the consent of the original owner.

Incidentally, you might be interested to learn that a .38 pocket revolver on the black market in Britain costs about $500, a Glock closer to $750. Not a lot of crooks and basket-cases can afford that.

You're confusing me now, what do you want a source for? I was talking about poverty and if you want sources on that I can do some googling since I take this mostly from memory. About where guns are gotten from I have said nothing about, as it's not the source as much as the root cause of why these guns are wanted in the first place that's the interesting part, i.e. poverty, social problems, slums, drug wars, gang wars, just crushing desperate poverty driving people into violent crime and drug abuse coupled with a prison system that turns them into even more hardened criminals.

As for poverty & crime, a christian site but whatever:
Poor people make up the overwhelming majority of those behind bars as 53% of those in prison earned less than $10,000 per year before incarceration.
http://www.capaassociation.org/newslett ... yCrime.htm

Also, another factor, the US prison system itself:
There is good reason to fear that minority men are severely at risk in the criminal justice system. 71% of all "3 strike" offenders in California prisons are African Americans or Latino Americans. What is worse, these men are all serving 25 to life sentences. Unbelievably, many of these men are serving these life sentences for petty theft and minor drug offenses. Offenses such as these are common among the poor. So common in fact that minority people suffer imprisonment wildly disproportional to their numbers in the general population.
http://www.pubdef.ocgov.com/poverty.htm

This is just the recipe for creating massive social problems, and look where we are now.
Incidentally, you might be interested to learn that a .38 pocket revolver on the black market in Britain costs about $500, a Glock closer to $750. Not a lot of crooks and basket-cases can afford that.
Thats what new semi automatic pistols usually cost in america, 500 and up. That's why there is an industry making "drop guns", cheap shitty guns for the poor (jennings, lorcin, etc.), called drop guns because you can discard it after using it without much economic penalty, well unless you're poor then even the 60-70 bucks they cost might be a lot.

I should also clarify that before when I said euro countries I have excluded the UK, referring mostly to continental europe & scandinavia.

Oh that. That's from the Small Arms Survey, and other places:
http://www.smallarmssurvey.org/.../Smal ... e-1-EN.xls

Though I am not sure anymore if I was correct in saying the guns per 100 figures include or exclude the illegal guns now, seems they might factor them in after all. EDIT: Yeah, yeah looks like they do that, so you can ignore what I said about doubling those numbers.

Based on my experience it has a lot to do with obvious factors like poverty, and poor education. Other factors are widespread mental illness, the failure to counter conspiracy theories, racial tension, an inbred distrust of government, and tolerance shown to militia groups that spread conspiracy theory propaganda to their members and surrounding areas. (to elaborate...I don't think the Sovereign Citizen movement should be tolerated after they started to consider violence as a reasonable recourse over the threat of just a motor vehicle impound).

Yeah, I agree.

FWITW, the state does prohibit violent militias and can prosecute them. Once the organization as such is prohibited, just being a member of it is a crime in itself, which helps tremedously in enforcing laws against them.

Depending on how technical you want to be, both. If a violent militia is classified as a terrorist group, such as those who were involved in mass arrests like the Hutaree and the Mountaineer Militia from here in WV, are illegal to be a part of.
