As for my theocracy, we are rather technocratic in some ways. Technocratic, because we need tools to crush xenos with it. Technology that serves the needs of war are always pursued with relentless vigour.
Fin, you wouldn't know what a technocracy was if I beat you over the head with the North American Energy Survey.

Dark Hellion your post made me laugh, especially the "Domo arigato Mr. Robato.". Though your battleship disturbingly sounded like it was trying to have angry sex with the Ork ships.

For one, their accuracy isn't stellar- they'd tend to outright miss when firing at anything much smaller than a battlecruiser. For another, Heim-capable munitions are large; their magazine capacity is even less stellar than their accuracy.
Wouldn't it be more stellar, actually? As in, 'need magazines the size of stellar body to carry them,' or maybe 'can hit a stellar body at anything outside knife-fight range, maybe?' :D

Also: Space Kraken? That's probably the most awesome thing ever. Any chance of doing some kind of fleet exercise with one? :D

The up-armored variety counts as a 500-point system defense monitor, whose only purpose is to charge the enemy ship under Heim drive, then attempt to mate with it followed by ripping it apart with its tentacles. So, technically, there is nothing prohibiting joint fleet exercises with space krakens, except for the fact that they're all living in our home systems, and we don't allow anyone in those unless they're our good allies. But since we wouldn't be doing joint fleet exercises without being allies, that's not too big of an obstacle to overcome.

Yes, they're used solely for lines like "Release the Krakens!" and "Admiral, our ship is being violated by a giant space tentacle monster, oh god oh god we're all gonna die"

Have a very nice day.

There are probably easily over a million individuals attending the BEEEF with "Shroom" as part of their name or as an alias of some sort.... I mean, it's got to be as common as "John".... oh hay
"The 4th Earl of Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

The Imperium as itself has a very organised approach when it devotes resources to Science, at least compared to most states.

The Theocracy part is really meant to serve as a glue to unite people against threats.

I know it's turning into a bit of a slog guys, but we are approaching the endgame for Zebes.

Thanks are owed to Eleventh Century Remnant, whose inspirational job of writing Leander and Pelton's alternate-universe cousins in the Hull 721 series is well worth attention if you value content and plot over formatting. ;)

Hey Simon - a quick question; what sort of relations has the Ascendancy got with Umeria?

So far as I know, broadly favorable; there's no real reason for mutual hostility or conflict that I can see.

We were mooting the idea of bringing the French Empire into our current bilateral defense pact with the NenAltKik back in February-April in light of the perceived Prussian threat. But Magister's extended absence has stalled that idea, and I'd say it's a dead letter now. I don't know how that would affect relations with the Ascendancy- which was one of the objections raised at the time.

Much oblidged. I asked because so much of next year's Starfleet construction is going to consist of carriers or line ships with large fighter bays, and because our fighters seem broadly similar (your cutters and my gunboats, anyway), my Admiralty was thinking of asking for instructions. Since we're not actually allies, I'm guessing that's a no-go?

On the subject of pacts with the French - since Ascendant foreign policy is based almost entirely around maintaining parity with Nouveau Paris, that would have very quickly seen the Ascendancy making friends with the Prussians. My government is mostly composed of the children and grandchildren of the people who fought the War of Self-Determination, and apart from inherited dislike of the French, I'd imagined that war as a particularly vicious one. Civil wars usually are.

Oh, I don't know. I'm sure we have naval attachés, and there's quite substantial published literature in Umeria too. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some friendly pointers being thrown around. Shall we tentatively schedule something for late Q4 of '00 or '01?

Of course, our fighter tactics are for unmanned drones deemed highly expendable and thus unsuited, and equipment differences lead to tactical differences, but there's going to be some cross-applicable experience.

You could also try to get some observers into TOP SHEP... ;)

That's what we were afraid of, you see.

In the aftermath of Zebes, the Umerians will reconsider the defensive priorities that motivated them to seek closer contact with the French in the first place, for understandable reasons.

Uh, yeah, you might want to change that to a little later, like maybe August or September (like after the Lost got MY message and decided they had to put theirs through earlier or later or something). Just makes having to retcon things (people going on about this new Refuge without going on about TWO guys showing up) a little less difficult.

Agreed.

The general game consensus seems to be that we're "in" August/September/October at this point; I'm only writing stuff dated to July because I need to finish that storyline, and I'm pretty much the only one who's still doing it at all.

Well, I think a fair number of people want a bit more time for the BEEEF, for plots by Steve, Siege, and a few others that take place during Q4... in my case, I'd still like another couple weeks to finish Zebes because when 3401 rolls around I actually want to be able to do things set in 3401, rather than still being trying to finish my giant hyperinflated serial novel that I should have plotted out more carefully three months ago so it wouldn't turn into a giant monster.

:(

Do you have things planned that are specifically waiting on 3401?
