Andrew Garfield looks like too much of a pretty boy to me. Although I think I've seen a couple pictures of him with glasses on, which made him look like a better fit for this role than this picture does. I still can't shake the feeling that this reboot is a bit too hasty, coming just a few years after the end of Raimi's hugely successful series.

I see what you're getting at, but that costume looks like it's composed of all kinds of weird rubbery composite materials custom molded into a Peter-Parker-shaped shell. The older trilogy's suit seemed like something you could at least put together with a sewing machine and some rubber mesh. Maybe he used non-1-hour-dissolving web to make it... That would actually make some sense.General Zod wrote:If anything it looks cheaper than the costume they had in the first three movies.Sriad wrote:I don't understand the suit texture thing they've got going on.

MUCH too soon. The Raimi films came out between 2002 and 2007. They should have just gone Bond-style and recast the actor, maintaining the existing continuity.Jim Raynor wrote:I still can't shake the feeling that this reboot is a bit too hasty, coming just a few years after the end of Raimi's hugely successful series.

The problem with doing an origin story for Spider-Man is that it's been only ten years since the last origin story. It seems redundant and unnecessary. How much different can they make it?

Uh, to me it just looks like they're going with a variation on Ben Reilly's Spider-Man suit.Havok wrote:Texture wise, looks like McGuire's suit. Style wise, it looks like it is trying to be all edgy and dark. Even today, Parker wouldn't be an emo kid, so I don't know why it looks like they are going that way.
I don't like the changes to the suit's design to try to make it look more modern or whatever.
The most obvious changes to me from this is that they are using Peter's spider emblem and gloves (and most likely boots as well) in place of Ben's gloves, although they did keep the thumbs separate from the rest of the fingers with a blue line between the red so that's still there from Ben's suit. Nothing edgy or modern, it's actually more or less an established Spider-Man suit that they are adjusting a bit.
I'd be cool if they took the Spectacular Spider-Man approach to it, that started with Pete already doing the superhero thing and got around to his "origin story" several episodes in.Havok wrote:And yeah, it's a reboot, so it will have the origin in it. Unfortunately, Spidey's origin isn't quite as well known as others so it will be back. (You could go without telling Batman's at all with the exception of a couple scenes late in the movie as Burton did.) Plus, it's not like Pete has 20 years from origin to being Spidey like Bats or Supes has, he just became Spidey like two days ago.

Its like Ben Reilly's suit aside from... being nothing like Ben Reilly's suit? Face it, that's pretty much Pete's standard suit, just with some added lines and minus the 'belt' like red section around his waist.

It's... okay. It's a pretty decent adaptation of the suit to the big screen provided you don't compare it to the Raimi version; but to be honest the Raimi suit was so spot-on (although other aspects of the movies were less successful) that any new version would pretty much have to be a step down.
I don't like the way the texture of the fabric obscures the webbing, but it's still recognizably a Spider-Man costume and its flaws seem to be minor enough that they shouldn't detract from the rest of the movie.

Well, to be fair, that's apparently a stunt version of the suit. Still, I have to agree that the Raimi version looked much better.

Stunt or not, it is the design that looks fucking horrible.
There is a pretty clear reason that Spidey's suit hasn't changed in 50 years, and that is because it looks great. They constantly try to come up with something better and in 50 fucking years the closest anyone has come is making it solid fucking black with a little white in it. This movie is gonna suck.

And the reason they made it solid fucking black was to hint that perhaps there was something inherently wrong with it. Pete's personality changed, the suit went out and about doing stuff Pete would rarely if ever do, the whole point of making that particular suit black was to show that it WASN'T Spider-Man.
And I'm sorry, stunt suit or not, studio still vs actual movie or not, that suit design absolutely positively stinks.

I'm trying to remain objective, but honestly speaking I'm getting a lot less excited for this. This movie needs to have one hell of a script.

Re: First Photo of Andrew Garfield as 'Spider-Man' Revealed
I don't know about that - I quite like Mayday's (originally Ben Reilly's) costume, and I really liked the look of the Iron Spider suit (though it would have been better with four mechanical arms than with three. Or with none at all.)Havok wrote:Stunt or not, it is the design that looks fucking horrible.

On a side note, I do like that they're going back to the mechanical web-slingers rather than organic ones.

I didn't like the organic webshooters myself when I first read about the Spider-Man movie, but the organic vs mechanical had pretty little impact on the trilogy, really. From what I remember the main impact in the comics was the running gag of the mechanical ones running dry at the most inopportune moments.

The webshooters were also a weakness that enemies could exploit by crushing or damaging them. Not an overly huge detail but I think it was a nice touch that was overlooked in the movies.Batman wrote:I didn't like the organic webshooters myself when I first read about the Spider-Man movie, but the organic vs mechanical had pretty little impact on the trilogy, really. In a TV series, possibly. Not in something as limited in scope as a movie triplet. Spider-Man 3 should have been 2 movies as it is. I don't think the issue was important enough to shoehorn in, especially with the first one (where they would have to have Pete come up with the things) already being burdened with the origin story.General Zod wrote:The webshooters were also a weakness that enemies could exploit by crushing or damaging them. It's a) superhero stuff so anything goes, and more importantly, b) it's Hollywood. 'Doing this is abysmally stupid' has never stopped them before, and other than the suit sucking donkey balls (and wherever does that figure of speech come from?) we don't yet know anything about that reboot. Which I agree was completely unnecessary.

OK, I think the first picture where he's maskless made the suit look pretty cool. I thought the second, 'stunt' picture looked fucking horrendous, and the last picture looked alright. I guess lighting and camera angles make a big difference to the suit...
And I agree, it's waywaywayway too early for a reboot. They should wait 10-15 years, not 4. I don't think this'll make as much money as the Raimi films...
