New Ala Gov: Only Christians are my brothers!

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

Straight from Yahoo News
By JAY REEVES, Associated Press – Tue Jan 18, 11:39 pm ET

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.

"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News.

The Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday called Bentley's remarks shocking.

"His comments are not only offensive, but also raise serious questions as to whether non-Christians can expect to receive equal treatment during his tenure as governor," said Bill Nigut, the ADL's regional director.

Speaking at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church after the official inaugural ceremony, Bentley told the crowd that he considered anyone who believed in Jesus to be his brothers and sisters regardless of color, but anyone who isn't a Christian doesn't have that same relationship to him.
"If the Holy Spirit lives in you that makes you my brothers and sisters. Anyone who has not accepted Jesus, I want to be your brothers and sisters, too,"Bentley said.
After his speech, Bentley said he did not mean to insult anyone.

Responding to questions about it, Bentley's office released a statement Tuesday saying he believes "he is the governor of all of Alabama."
"The governor clearly stated that he will be the governor of all Alabamians — Democrat, Republican and Independent, young, old, black and white, rich and poor. As stated in his (inaugural) address, Gov. Bentley believes his job is to make everyone's lives better," the statement said.

Ashfaq Taufique, president of the Birmingham Islamic Society, told The Birmingham News he wasn't sure how Bentley's remarks were intended.
"Does it mean that those who according to him are not saved are less important than those who are saved?" Taufique said. "Does he want those of us who do not belong to the Christian faith to adopt his faith? That should be toned down. That's not what we need. If he means that, I hope he changes it. We don't want evangelical politicians. They can be whatever in their private life."

The official with the Anti-Defamation League, which fights discrimination against Jewish people, said it sounded like Bentley was using the office of governor to advocate for Christian conversion.

"If he does so, he is dancing dangerously close to a violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which forbids government from promoting the establishment of any religion," Nigut said.

Now this is not really surprising, we know there are plenty of Fundi Asshats in the Us Government and especially down south.
What is surprising is, up until recently, they have known enough to keep their mouth shut about just how fundi they are. Having a Governor on day one come out and admit what so many of his people believe deep down is a bit of a start. And of course adding the laughable "I didn't mean to offend anyone" is icing on the cake.

Well . . . it's not like I ever planned on visiting Alabama anyway. I expect we're going to see some backpedaling once he gets a stern talking to.

On the bright side of things, at least now everyone knows what a fundamentalist crazy he is. Most politicians don't let that show, and it's far more comforting (and humorous) to see one who at least expresses his views openly.

A governor feeling confident enough of the bigotry of his base that he can declare his contempt for a portion of his subjects. This is comforting and humorous?

I guess it would be if he hadn't been correct in his judgement. Do you think these (thoroughly damning) words would possibly result in his forced resignation, as should have happened?

I doubt they're going to be enough to force a resignation. At best we can expect some apologetic backpedaling, and if we're lucky he'll be a one term governor.

Guys, Alabama is like the belt buckle of the Bible Belt and Bently is an ultra-far-right fundy loon. What did you expect, the second coming of Martin Luther King? We were actually better off with Bob Reily.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley Apologizes for Christian-Only Comments

Following Backlash, Robert Bentley Says He Didn't Mean to Offend Anyone

By RUSSELL GOLDMAN

Jan. 19, 2011

Gov. Robert Bentley of Alabama met with religious leaders and issued an apology today for saying after his inauguration Monday that he wished non-Christians would become his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Several civil rights groups said the comments Bentley, a Republican, made at church service following his inauguration were offensive and tantamount to proselytizing.

"If anyone from other religions felt disenfranchised by the language, I want to say I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone in any way," Bentley said outside his office at the state capitol.

Bentley was supposed to meet with members of the Birmingham Jewish Federation later this month, but moved the meeting to today, and included leaders of other religious groups.

Addressing a crowd Monday at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church in Montgomery, the new governor said, " Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother."

"If the Holy Spirit lives in you that makes you my brothers and sisters. Anyone who has not accepted Jesus, I want to be your brothers and sisters, too," he said.

Following the initial comments many civil right groups objected to the comments and called on the governor to apologize.

"It is stunning to me that he'd make those remarks. It's distressing because of the suggestion that he feels that people who aren't Christian are not entitled to love and respect," said Bill Nigut, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League.

David Silverman, president of American Atheists, said, "The governor basically said: 'If you're not like me, you're second-class.' This is a man puts the Bible above the Constitution and his preacher above the president. His words are disgusting and bigoted and reinforce Alabama's reputation for being backward."

Following the meeting, Montgomery Rabbi Elliot Stevens said, "I do not think the governor meant anything negative," according to WSFA-TV.

"The governor had intended no offense by his remarks. He is the governor of all the people, Christians, non-Christians alike," a spokesman for the governor told ABCNews.com following the meeting.

See, he didn't really mean for anyone to take offense, because it simply never occurred to him that anyone would take offense. So it's all better...

To be fair, it's pretty standard doctrine (if not practice) that once one is saved, other christians are brothers and sisters of that person. As much so as if they were brothers and sisters by blood. Thus those that are not saved are not "part of the family" so to speak.

So by saying: Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," and "If the Holy Spirit lives in you that makes you my brothers and sisters. Anyone who has not accepted Jesus, I want to be your brothers and sisters, too," it's less of a statement of contempt for non-believers and more of an expression of a yearning for non-believers to come into the family also. i.e. he desires for them to become Christian.

Which is worse if you think about it. A governor speaking at his inauguration of a desire to convert people to Christianity.

The very real problem with that sort of thinking is that to many people of other faiths, it is highly offensive for them to hear that, in effect, unless they accept Christ as their Savior, they are damned. Who wants to hear that? He's starting off with a negative. At that point, he's already lost.

This almost makes me wonder if his 'slip' wasn't perhaps intentional .

Given the demographic of his constituency, such fundi controversy can't help but improve his popularity and chances of reelection.

As far as Christians are concerned, and this includes the governor, he didn't do anything wrong. He merely told folks the truth, and among his base the "truth" is highly valued. Enough with the hiding behind politics! Just come out and tell people what they "need" to hear. Of course, in a political sense that doesn't make any sense, and it makes him an idiot for saying that.

Point is, he actually didn't mean to offend anyone, just help them on the road to salvation and save their souls, which is the ultimate goal of religious fundamentalists in the US. It doesn't occur to him that other folks' faith is their own to choose and that the governor's job is not defined by how many people he saves but by how competently he governs. That's how twisted his world view is.

To be fair to him, that probably is the case. How many non-Christians do you think this guy has ever (knowingly) encountered?

Really? Do you think that this is going to turn off the sort of Alabama voter who put him into office in the first place.

There's a reason I said "if we're lucky", you know. It's not like I'm expecting miracles or anything.

No, it won't. In fact he'll probably be able to leverage this shit into bonus votes by playing the persecuted christian card come the next election, and it'll probably work too.

That is not a fucking apology. That is pushing the blame for this onto people of other religions - you know, those people who are too thin-skinned to shrug it off when an elected official implies that anyone not in his religion is going to burn in Hell for all eternity. Obviously, he couldn't have expected anyone to take offense.

Obviously.

It's not just the South dude. American culture and government as a whole is soaked on it. Remember all the pissing and moaning when people thought that Obama might not get sworn in on a Bible? The South might be the most vocal part of it but it's lurking under the surface of your entire country.

Did the governor apologize, or just the spokesman?

Edit: Missed the governor saying it in the second post. I made a mistake.
