I'm getting Broadband internet access soon!

Post by Xon »

I'm currently in the planning stages of upgrading my dialup account with a Broadband acount. The type I'm planning on getting is called 'Blink 128' with iinet. It actually is cheaper in the long run to get Broadband access instead a dedicated phone line & dialup account(fixed rate local phone costs help a lot)

The full details can be found here

Stats:
Monthly Cost:$49.95(Australian, about ~$29.97 US using 0.6c AUS to $1 US)
Maximum Speed(Down/Up) (1):128kb/64kb
Peak Quota (2):500MB
bliinkTime Quota:500MB
Excess $/MB:None
POP3 Email Boxes:5
Web Space:30MB
(Also it states in the TOS that is does not has a static IP!)

1- Speed is slowed to a maximum of 72k after shaping quota is reached in any consecutive 30 days in either peak time or bliink Time.
2- Peak time is 7am to midnight. bliink Time is midnight to 7am. Quotas only include downloads, uploads are not counted!

There is also a thing called 'blink zone' which is a bunch of sites/servers which dont count to the download quota. There is a bunch of gaming servers & all iinet customers in my states are included in this and there is the FTP server @ iinet which is also included.

This is the ADSL modem that is getting bundled with it(pre-setup & free 24/7 tech support for customers @ iinet)
There are 2 different ADSL modem which double as routers which can also be chosen. However I would prefer if this didnt cost a lot.

I'm thinking of getting a hardware based firewall instead of relying on the biult-in software firewall bundled with winXP. Any sugestions on good brands/tips/advice?

There is also another service which is an extra $10 a month more, and gives a total 4GB of downloads before shaping occurs. And it improves the download speed to 256KB

My dial up account is really reliable, often going for days before the connection gets reset. Most of the time it is from me installing updates of it crashing when I try and log out(onging problem on my box, some times crashes when you do a full logout instead of a quick log out. Solution: quicklog out, login to the Admin acount force log every one else off, then quick log off)

Also I have a home network, with my computer connecting through my WinXP box.

First off, congratulations! I know what it is to be without broadband and it sucks some major ass!

Now, to my real post

While it is awesome that you are finally getting broadband, Aussie plans just suck ass! 1GB a month??? and where do you insert the cell phone??? And America is just headed in that direction *shudders uncontrolably*

More power to you, though... and congrats once more, matey.

My access is $45 CDN/month ($30 US/month). I get 5 GB of bandwidth, 1Mbps download speed, and 128kbps upload speed. But I think broadband access is unusually cheap in Toronto.

Are they limiting the amount of bits you can download over the pay period in Canada as well???? Is that cable or DSL?

Uh, I live in the US. And I do have a 56k modem, it's just poor phone line quality.

That's DSL. I think most providers do limit use of bandwidth, because bandwidth costs THEM money.

I pay £14.99 a month for a 128/64 connection with a 1GB a day quota which is flexible (they'll only come after you if you go over it day in, day out). Except that I'm currently a on a two week free trial of the 512/128 connection which is extremely nice to have but I can't afford to keep it.

Don't mean to show off, but...

I have a 3mbps down, 384 kbps up unlimited bandwidth cable connection that costs me $93 US (My company subsidizes $50 of it, so It ends up costing me roughly $43)

Now go ahead and tell me how much I suck

And if it makes you feel any better, I think it will go the Canadian and Aussie way pretty soon, so my days of downloading 10GB every 24 hours might just be over

I hate you. I really do. The only way we can get those sorts of speeds here in the UK is to get a T3 or something similarly obscene!

Thank you. And this is nothing. In the old "@Home" days, I paid $39.95 a month for "advertised" 1.5mbps down and 128kbps up, and I consistently was able to download a complete Linux ISO in 9 minutes from fucking Europe

We are talking INSANE speeds here. Of course, @Home went bust a year ago... wanna suggest why?

Congratulations, my friend. Your life will begin to change with broadband. Air will become cleaner. Food will taste better. You'll wake up with more energy. Porn will be faster and of higher quality.

The big thing is, I am getting fixed rate broadband. So if I do go over the 1GB limit, I dont pay a cent extra, my download speed is just reduced to 72kps which is still much much faster than what I have now.

Also I living in Perth Western Australia, the most isolated state capitial. Hell our nearest capitial city(per state, not per nation) is Singapore!

And I could setup a server which uploaded a lot, and I wouldnt notice it(as I only have a download quota!) on my quota :D

As the man said...

Screw you!

Just because not all of us have a super fast connection doesn't mean we don't like surfing the net....why don#'t we swap connections and see how you enjoy at being stuck at 4k...hm?
