Yo, can someone calculate some electricities for me?

Okay, so as many of you know, I moved into a new place. Brand new house filled with disgusting incandescent bulbs in all the fixtures. So I set about replacing every last one of them with CFLs this weekend and I was wondering how much of the electronz I was saving from ending their lives as heat energy on a filament.

total of 26 60W incandescent bulbs replaced with 13W (60W equivalent brightness) CFLs
total of 10 65W incandescent indoor flood lights replaced with 14W (65W equivalent brightness) CFLs


Can anyone calculate how much of the world I'm saving from POLLUTIONS by doing this? (Actually, I don't care about pollution - I'm more interested in money savings and until LED ligthbulbs come down in price, CFLs are my poison of choice)

You have saved about 1700 W. At a price of 20 cents/kWh*, assuming the lights are all on for 8 hours a day (a very bad assumption, but I have no desire to construct an accurate model of home light usage), you will save ~$80 over what your bill would be. You will have expended ~115 less kWh of energy.

You probably will never incur the peak capacity charge on lights alone, so applying the base rate to your savings, you will save about $25-30/month if you use your lights as I assumed. I also need to correct the energy you'd save: it should be about 400 kWh, not 115.

That's freakin' sweet. They pay for themselves in maybe 4-5 months (We don't leave our lights on 8 hours a day , obviously) and the rest of the time is just gravy. Saving energy makes me feel pretty damn good.

My roommate and I have been doing the same exact thing. It's pretty sweet when you sit down and figure out just how much you're gonna save. Between not having the heat on (we're in an apartment building, so the temperature doesn't get below 60 degrees, except at night) and changing out the lights, we're expecting to cut the electrical bill in half compared to what the previous tenants were paying.
