The Catholic Confession: There's an App for that

Post by Lagmonster »

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12391129

From the article, "The Catholic Church has approved an iPhone app that helps guide worshippers through confession. Described as 'the perfect aid for every penitent', it offers users tips and guidelines to help them with the sacrament...The app takes users through the sacrament - in which Catholics admit their wrongdoings - and allows them to keep track of their sins. It also allows them to examine their conscience based on personalised factors such as age, sex and marital status..."

Now, I'm not in the same business the Pope is, but this verges on genius. I personally am waiting for the inclusion of in-app absolution purchases followed by some German nailing a written protest to Steve Jobs.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Eventually culminating in a 30 year platform war that will leave a third of cyperspace ravaged.

Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? Meh. All it is is an examination of conscience. Its no different than what the Church has printed on paper for years-its a how to guide to prepare for confession, not the sacrament itself.

Once, in the Army, I actually told my confession over the phone to an Orthodox priest (Orthodox chaplains not being very common in the Army) and received absolution the next time I was physically present with an Orthodox priest.

Except the app actually costs money.

Ah, Absolutions, one of the best money-making schemes ever came up with, complete with catchy adverts.

Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Next thing you know they're going to bring back indulgences because they're so hard up on cash.

I wouldn't literally call it a cash-for-forgiveness scheme, unless the Catholic flat out says that buying and using the app is as good as attending Confession.

The Catholic Church didn't make the app, and isn't selling it - a private company is doing that. The Church just approved it.

Soon, you will be able to jack off to porn in one window and alt-tab to forgiveness in the next. Brilliant.

Negligible difference; somebody is making money off of the guilt of Catholics, by the approval of the Vatican.

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

The iPhone app just tells you how to confess. Jesus needs a quadcore and 2 gigs of RAM to actually provide forgiveness. :)
