On the one hand, I hate when networks set up for a specific theme start running astray of that theme - when's the last time MTV actually showed a music video, again? - but on the other...hell, it's Firefly.
I'm a fan of Michio Kaku, in general, and he should be entertaining as well. I already own the series on DVD, but I'll definitely jump at the chance to see it on TV again.

I...would expect that to explain them, since that's the official explanation given.Sarevok wrote:That kind of actually explains Firefly verse ships. They are all living space and cargo areas wrapped around huge engines. No giant propellant tanks are to be seen anywhere. Obviously they figured out some way to move ships fast without requiring half the vessels volume to be propellant.Losonti Tokash wrote:Something about uniting electromagnetism and gravity to remove inertia and give ships a kick in the ass so they go faster with less propellant.

Re: Firefly to ReRun on Science channel.
As far as I'm concerned, the film is alternate continuity, mainly due to the retconning of character development from the series.Cykeisme wrote:I agree, it was a bit jarring when the movie's opening sequence "revealed" that the entire series took place in one incredibly complex solar system.. and the shots of the ship flying away leaving that awesome sparkly trail wasn't FTL.Stofsk wrote:Another one would be the super-system which has dozens of inhabitable/terraformable planets and moons.
There was also the fact that the movie ignored a lot of the character development built in the series (Jayne starting to grow a conscience, Mal coming to accept the Tams as part of his crew), but I guess I could accept that the movie needed to be understandable to people who didn't watch the series.
Fucking awesome show, at any rate.
Why was it canceled, again?
Maybe the science channel can explain how the hybrid conventional firearms/railguns everyone carries work. Or the hovercraft.

Re: Firefly to ReRun on Science channel.
Technology used to support the hovercraft was implied to exist in the series. Things like flying cars are known to exist on developed central planets. In addition many of the ships seen in the series fly inside an atmosphere in a manner as if they have a SW repulsorlift drive. Consider the Alliance gunship in the episode "Trash" that chased Serenity into a mountain range on a planet. The thing had no visible downward pointing thrusters yet was hovering and moving around like a helicopter.
Or take the protagonists spaceship - the Serenity itself for example. The Firefly class ship don't seem to do vertical takeoff/landing or hovering on raw engine thrust alone. In real world exhaust from a vertical take off jet aircraft is insanely hot and damaging. The F-35 and V-22 Osprey are having serious problems because their exhaust can melt the deck of ships while landing or hovering above them.
You don't see such destructive engine exhaust from the Serenity implying the engines are not producing enough thrust to support the entire weight of the ship. There is probably similar anti gravity tech work here to reduce the apparent mass of the ship.
Which incidentally ties into the earlier discussion about Firefly verse ships having inertia manipulation tech that lets engine do more with less thrust.

I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
Re: It's official, they're bringing Firefly back!!!!
Honestly, I think it's best to leave it were it died. It was a fantastic show and I enjoyed it immensely but I could already see that River stories were going to dominate and the adventures of a barefoot fucked up teenager don't interest me that much.spaceviking wrote:Would you really want firefly the next generation?Stofsk wrote:Thread title is misleading. I don't know...Whil Wheaton with no shirt on sounds like he might be a decent draw to me.Batman wrote:.
