Re: World of Tanks Beta
Yeah, that's general advice for most any tank, if you have friends who play it, play with them so you can voip easily too. I've won some ridiculous games playing with friends just because we reacted faster and confused them while we opened advantages for each other.
However, this goes triple for the T29. In the right place you're invincible as long as you keep your turret pointed at them. If you start looking back and forth you die burning and covered in spiders as they both pop your weaker side turret. So get a friend so you each only have to shoot one guy.

This is going too sound very strange, but thank christ for Mr. Coffee.
I decided to torture myself and look at the alt history page on the WoT forums, and I find the thread about what would happen if Mussolini hadn't declared war on the US. I have never seen such idiocy on a page. The Germans pushing through the USSR too Japan? The German nuclear program? WTF!

Oh man
A few more divisions on the Eastern Front = pushing through the entirety of the USSR in a few years! It was that close.
i'd see it as this, US would still help the UK by all means of transporting the Canadians and other Supplies though using their ships as the Germans are not yet hostile to the US. US finishes Japan off earlier, Germany doesn't invade UK but has more men and supplies to fight Russia and are close to linking up with Japan when US delcares war on Germany, D Day happens in Normandy a few years late, few less cassulties, As Japan is finished Us helps Russia out on their front as well as the British Front, Germany is finished a few years later. No cold war happens as russia relayed on US help. End of War competly around 1950.

Or my personal favorite, the one where somebody basically suggested that there was a conspiracy to make the Germans look massively worse and their nuclear program far behind where it actually was. Neglecting minor factors such as it making Stalin look much worse, the US like even more of a bunch of superfluous latecomers than we already were and the US making nuclear devices and the facilities for their production before the Germans had either and Germany not making nearly enough electricity to make the things. Yep, a conspiracy involving two giant countries spending massive effort to make themselves look worse by falsifying all the paperwork of the German nuclear project and their electricity production. Totally plausible. Then he says I trolled him.

This sentence... what the fuck does that even mean... what's wrong with terrible as a word, and... why do we have to add lol to bombing... why is bombing someone lol worthy...Provided that Japan basically had terribad AA, it would just be lol-bombing of japan.
And same post
Wait... so the US submarine forces were doing what, wandering around with their torps up their bums?(japan never fought AGAINST subs)
You mean apart from when they sank HMS ark royal...while the germans never fought against carriers
I knew this shit before I went to uni to study it. This is ridiculous. I'm just praying these are twelve year olds....

Frankly I'd prefer that the idiots kept hanging out with the gutter whore version of English, it does make them easier to distinguish. I think what he means by lol-bombing is "so simple even a german can do it!" Or maybe war isn't as simple as a Geico commercial. I'm pretty sure it's a sign of severe 4channitis of the brain, and in this case I'm a dentist, all I know is that when a tooth's bad, we pluck it.barnest2 wrote:This sentence... what the fuck does that even mean... what's wrong with terrible as a word, and... why do we have to add lol to bombing... why is bombing someone lol worthy...Provided that Japan basically had terribad AA, it would just be lol-bombing of japan.
Well, a true cynic could argue that the Japanese never really managed to fight against the US subs where fight is defined as presenting a credible effort to destroy, but they got enough kills that's kind of a smarmy asshole thing to say.And same postWait... so the US submarine forces were doing what, wandering around with their torps up their bums?(japan never fought AGAINST subs)
And the time the twins riddled the hell out of the HMS Glorious, the only time a surface ship really got to sink its teeth into a fleet carrier, and one of two times with any carrier (the other being the USS Gambier Bay). The British had quite a few carriers, they just had horrid air groups. You mean apart from when they sank HMS ark royal...while the germans never fought against carriers
Yeah, I'm still in uni, not taking a history major, and it's kind of sad that enough people that there are likely some older kids in there are this bad with history. It angers me and I'm taking a compsci degree. Military history and naval engineering are just hobbies. The really annoying bit is when these guys start using their warped understanding of history to ask for "realistic" changes. Run for the goddamn hills when that happens. Thankfully that stuff tends not to stick.barnest2 wrote:I'm sat here doing a dissertation on Naval warfare... this shit angers me :p

Yeah, from time to time. I'd play it more if it weren't for that glitch on my desktop, because getting ready to game on my laptop sucks. Go ahead with your thoughts though, we've got a bunch of guys with some quite high level tanks.
Re: World of Tanks Beta
Heh. Well, I find it a bit fun due to being somewhat a WW2 buff. Also, ramming attacks. However, there's a few fundamentals that make it horribly frustrating at times. It could be an MMO thing, since I'm not used to those.
I think enough people have complained about the match-making, and it has improved somewhat, but it does have a long way to go before being balanced. It seems to have no way of differentiating better tanks within the same tier (for instance, a stock standard T-34 = fully upgraded Panzer 4 with top level crew), or even player skill. This could be abstracted with a hidden number outside of simply tier, that takes tier, upgrade level, and "win/lose" ratio into account. This would be self-correcting too, as players with poor win ratios will get dumped into either people with worse tanks or also poor win ratios into account.
Another thing is the excessively long grind. It takes forever to get a new tank, experience, etc. I know it is an MMO, but paired with the poor match-making listed above, it can be immensely frustrating with some tanks. Particularly if you tend to only play with friends, where you get bumped up a tier, or more.
And finally the tank progression. I think you should start out with a general purpose tank, and move on to more specialised tanks, rather than starting in a "scout" tank, especially since scouting in this game is significantly different from the rest of the game.
I'd have more, particularly specific ones, or lack of game features, but I'm out of time.

I prefer low tier tanks. They get fair fights pretty often. This games needs a true MMO type battle without prototype tanks. Add non tank type AI enemies like air planes , infantry , fortifications ... and you will get an intresting battle.

Re: World of Tanks Beta
I would love to see non armour units, especially things like infantry. Tanks never really operated alone (on the western front, I know I'll get called out but whatever), and mostly utilised combined arms. So seeing them fight alone is... odd...

I think it might be fun to list tanks we've enjoyed a lot on the lower tiers, especially considering that I agree that some of the lower level tanks are a lot more fun, and it'd give the newer guys some stuff to shoot for as well. Some tanks I've really enjoyed are:
- Pz. 35(t), generally zippy, maneuverable and all around fun light tank.
- Panzerjäger 1, also zippy and has a big gun and a lot of traverse.
- T-34, got a hilariously punchy and fast-firing 57mm gun with a bunch of speed and good maneuverability.
- Sherman, because the howitzer makes the low tier matches hilarious.

Tier 2 - T2 light "He is **** fast" is a common comment when I use this tank.
Tier 3 - M2 medium the 75mm howitzer is a great gun for a tier 3 tank
Tier 4 - T28 the 85mm is a great gun for high tier matches.
Tier 5 - KV this one has several good guns. The 152mm is a nasty surprise for tier 7+ tanks

Ok getting more than 4 kills is pretty hard with this gun. But a least I am able to get kills in a tier7 match. Unlike my M7 which hands out steel wall awards to my opponents in tier 7 matches.spaceviking wrote:

Re: World of Tanks Beta
No, not really that hard if you are near the top of the food chain and your team has at least someone willing to support you. KV with 152mm is my favorite vehicle, one-shotting other KVs, T1 Heavies and occasional M6s and KV-3s never gets old. And if you end up in a high-tiered match you can cause some pretty horrible damage even to Tier IX vehicles pretty often. Stripping 40% HPs of IS-4 with a single HE shot = profit.Thunderfire wrote:Ok getting more than 4 kills is pretty hard with this gun. But a least I am able to get kills in a tier7 match.

Re: World of Tanks Beta
I'm loving the larger populations now that WoT has gone open beta and is gearing up for launch. In the past, matches in my M7 had me pegged mid and low tier in the game and spending more time dodging IS3's, T29's and Tiger II's. Now, I'm regularly facing off with PzIII's, M4's, T28's and T34's. It's awesome. Nary a bitch spamtube in sight and a few TD's with a ton of high-speed mediumweight brawling. My M7's APCR loaded 75mm tears shit up.
Occasionally I still get the classic WoT matchup of walls of cowardly superheavy tanks backed by four drone-control facilities, but that's getting rarer.

Finally, finally, FINALLY got my hands on the Katy. Now to upgrade it so it's actually better than the Tiger. Thus far it's proving alright. It's nice actually being able to bounce the odd shot off of the front and the Long 88 just isn't a bad gun. Hopefully it'll pick up a bit more speed once I've gained the ActuallyarmouredTurm and a 105.
