Re: Wisconsin governor: balance budget by breaking unions
Fox News is backed by and directed by the third most powerful media organization in the world, News Corporation. The purpose of Fox News is blatantly that of propaganda: to influence the public into following Conservative and corporate interests. This is a news organization that fought for and won the right to lie knowingly on air and still call themselves a news channel, which represents the one consistent ideological position they hold.
Without years of Fox News bullshit to lay the groundwork, the actions we see in Wisconsin would not be necessary. Without the cumulative normalization of "us against them," US soldiers would likely have considered objecting to the notion of systematic anal rape of young boys in order to torture their mothers (who had been detained at random, and were thus terrorists by virtue of their nationality). Without Fox News whispering to Americans about how the subhuman Others deserve it for being such pussies man, we would possibly not have soldiers joking on an open channel about how cool it was that his Sergeant would pimp out a fifteen year old girl and how fine she was (trigger warning here)... this in the sure knowledge that he wouldn't regret those words because everyone's doing it.
Systematic atrocities aren't unheard of in wars of aggression, though it rarely gets this pervasive. Thing is, we can trace part of the blame and certainly much of the viciousness of these wars to Fox News, and we can absolutely trace the systematic destruction of hospitals and the brutality of the conquerors to the unending message of "this is right, this is good, this is heroic."
Of course, the fun doesn't stop there, but it's a good enough start. So what's wrong with Fox? Jesus, man. What's wrong with you for even asking the question?

Can you give an example of Fox lying in their news coverage? Fox is very blunt that they are conservative in the news analysis with O'Reilly and Hannity being excellent examples.SirNitram wrote:A history of lying blatantly in their 'news' coverage they defend themselves in court by claiming to be an entertainment channel, mostly.paladin wrote:What's so bad about Fox? You can watch using... -ugh- a Fox News live stream. Fortunately, they are not opening their mouths to lie, they are just rolling cameras at the moment. http://interactive.foxnews.com/livestre ... l?chanId=6
Unfortunately, I am not downtown at the moment, so at best I can spread the word about what's really going on.
To say nothing of the deranged maniac they have which is proclaiming this is an assault on REAL AMURIKANS.
The deranged maniac I assume is Glen Beck? Maybe you just missed the numerous times they "accidentally" switch a Republican official's letter from R to D whenever they fall out of favor too.

Here is the smoking gun: lawyers for Fox have argued that they have the right to lie and call it news. How anyone can take the organization seriously after said organization would even propose such an argument is beyond me.paladin wrote:How has Fox been dishonest? The funny thing is how anyone would possibly believe it's not deliberate. Lies about ACORN? Check. Continue lying about ACORN when the truth is out? Sure, why not. Lies about WMDs? Have a double helping! Represent Republicans as Democrats when the inevitable sex scandal occurs, and a Democrat as a Republican when that's more useful? Fox is totally there, man.
In fact, you show me a single random Fox news broadcast, and I will guarantee you there'll be one or more of the following: vigorous assertions that have already been established to be false, slander without basis, quotes taken out of context to make them look unreasonable, videos that are unrelated to the story being narrated but purport to be from the incidents described; there will be smears against anything considered Liberal (and actually is center-right) and fawning lip service paid to a Constitution few of these people have read and none of them actually care about.
But other than that, it's decent theatre pretty colours and whooshing noises, so I suppose it would appeal to anyone who finds Tom Clancy a few steps above their mental capacity.

Deliberately flipping the results of a national poll to show 66% favouring the stripping of collective barganing rights from public workers when in fact it was 66% opposed goes far beyond "being up front about their news analysis being conservative". That is outright falsehood. Like many of the other examples that have already been catalogued just in this one thread. It's to the point where Fox should be charged with fraud for calling their programming "news".paladin wrote:How has Fox been dishonest? No, it's called locking oneself to one single viewpoint. That being a media machine that seeks to redefine reality as per that old Karl Rove quote:paladin wrote:It's called wanting to understand a different viewpoint. Everyone doesn't share the same opinions or viewpoints.
Fox News is built on this. That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.
No, the Bush administration did that themselves. By organizing a rape gang from their own Iraqi militia and then filming it - for fun - they are in every bit complicit in the rape. Are you accusing US soldiers of raping young boys?...US soldiers would likely have considered objecting to the notion of systematic anal rape of young boys in order to torture their mothers (who had been detained at random, and were thus terrorists by virtue of their nationality).

Rumsfeld apologized, fatuously. Bush did, or said he did. The only good thing out of it apparently came from the fact that now, excesses of this sort could stop. This was July, 2004.
They still haven't stopped.
So no, I'm not accusing them. The accusations have already been made, denied, then admitted, then shrugged aside.

Sorry, in my annoyance I committed a faux pas: it goes without saying, but no, the Bush administration was not present at the rapes, nor did they film anything. My actual post meant to point out that the soldiers certainly did and were, and that it was (and apparently is) business as usual.
Of course, the Bush administration did have access to those tapes, and knew about them. Their reaction when it got out? Well, I think one part of Rumsfeld's apology is particularly telling.

Because that's the real tragedy. Not that it occurred, but that evidence got out.MIKLASZEWSKI: Rumsfeld said even he didn‘t see all the photos until last night, but admits he underestimated the negative impact those images would have.
RUMSFELD: If there‘s a failure, it‘s me. It‘s my failure for not understanding and knowing that there were hundreds or however many there are of these things, that could eventually end up in the public and do the damage they‘ve done.

What is wrong with Fox News? Exactly everything that is wrong with the USA. They don't just put on one insane, raving lunatic on podium and get him to talk, they put in several.
They are not only worst of modern news media, not only do they lie, not only they make reality instead of finding it, they are PROUD of it.
There are plenty of litanies of just deeply wrong Fox News is.

Walker has apparently pretty much replaced Capitol Police (Whom disagree with him) with a bunch of loyal cops from Milwaukee County, where he used to be County Executive, and naturally has scratched plenty of backs there in his time. They have very strictly regulated access into the Capitol, letting the 60 or so people who have stayed inside all this time remain, but escorting all others who enter the building to make sure they leave.
So, protesters are now sleeping outside of the Capitol on the ground in 15 degree weather. Behold, the first Walkerville.

Fortunately, aid has been flowing into them quite steadily, as people are already delivering blankets, hand warmers, electrical cords, heaters, hot food and drinks, and so on. When we all work together, we can overcome the intolerable!

They're not dishonest because they're conservative. They're dishonest because they lie. The two are different things. For example, when they covered the student protests in Britain, they were saying that they were protests over high government spending, when in actuality they were protests over cuts in government spending. There was no ambiguity in this. Fox just flat out lied. How has Fox been dishonest? They are upfront about their news analysis being conservative.
