Resident Evil laser grid

Who could create the wall of lasers, or something that causes the same effect?
How much effort for each sci-fi universe that is capable would it take?
Would the team have survived if they had immediately opened fire on the walls holding the generators?
Does anyone know why they didn't just open the doors to the zombies and turn the grid on to thin out their numbers?

I think B5 and SW acutal use somthing similar in some places

I know they are idiots, every single character in the movie earned their death at least once.
The question to me is whether or not it would be possible to generate a similar effect too quickly for human reactions to save anyone, and without a blatant visible clue beforehand. For example, could the Galactic Empire create a magnetically sealed corridor, with minute gaps running along the wall for the effect to run down. Drop the magnetic seal on the walls, fire up the generator, then just send out the cleaning droids.
"Sir, the corridor is shielded, we are approaching the blast doors,and... Sir we are detecting a rapid energy buildup-AAAARRRRRGGHHHHHgristlegristle screamsplut"
