Create a Space Marine Chapter!
Once upon a time SDN had a thread called "Create a Space Marine" Chapter. For some reason the search function is crapping out when I look for it here at work, so instead of a link to the thread I will just mention it in passing.
Over in testingstan some Fellow Nerds eagle-eyed posters noticed a SM Dreadnought sitting next to my camping stove. Someone called it Blood Ravens Dread, which is a terrible heresy. It's from my homebrew chapter. With that said...post your Space Marines Chapter!
Roboutes Rangers
Homeworld:Tsenacommacah, Amicalola System
Chaper Master:Opechancanough
Master of the Librarium:Ghost Dancer
Master of the Forge:Henrico Szyslak
Master of the Apothecarium: TBA
Master of the Fleet:TBA
Color Scheme: Maroon with Ultramarines Blue trim for most units, Honor Guard and 1st Company Terminators are pained Ultramarines Blue with Maroon trim.
Motto:Ut Prosim (That I may serve)
Description: Roboute's Rangers are a chapter that claim to be of the Second Founding, although no Imperial Records of the Chapter exist before era of the Third Founding. As the name implies, they trace their lineage to the Ultramarines. Despite this, the chapter maintains such close ties to the Adeptus Mechanicus that they are viewed upon with suspicion by other chapters. There are stark deviations from the Codex Astartes, such as an additional Scout Company, and an unusual number of Techmarines. The manufactorum at the Fortress-Monastery of Iron Mountain is known for providing heavy equipment and Techmarine training for newly established chapters, such as the Sable Swords. Due to the emphasis RR doctrine places on using the tools of the Omnissiah, the Rangers recruit heavily from the civilized world of Tsenacommacah, as well as the Feudal World of Amicalola. Iron Mountain is located in the desolate icy wastes of Tsenacommacah's South Pole.
In addition to being the overlords of the Amicalola System, the Rangers maintain close ties with the nearby Tuscarora and Powhatan systems. The Rangers maintain a fleet consisting of 3 Battle Barges and 12 Strike Cruisers.
Notable Engagements:
-Sabbat Worlds Crusade
-Black Crusade of Jihar the Lacerator
-Mobilized in support of Aurelian Crusade
-Corania
-Medusa Campaign
-Purging of Matagorda

Re: Create a Space Marine Chapter!
Here's the custom 1st Legion successors that I have worked on for a while.
The Angels of Retribution
Origins
First spotted late in M37, the Angels of Retribution are a mystery to the Adeptus Administratum. No record of its creation exists, nor does the Mechanicum have any knowledge of its origin. Despite the Administratum's efforts to collect data on the chapter, little is yet known about the Angels of Retribution. All that has been determined is that the Angels of Retribution have been active on both loyal Imperium planets and in hostile areas, though the motive of their visitation of these areas is unknown, as they arrive and depart very suddenly, rarely staying in the area for more than a few days and sometimes leaving before a conflict has been resolved. Though this behavior is noted as odd, it is not sufficiently worrisome to warrant more than a cursory examination by any members of the Adeptus Terra. The Angels of Retribution have been logged as existing, with a note in their file stating more information is needed before any course of action in regards to the chapter can be suggested.
In truth, the Angels of Retribution are a collective Successor chapter of the Unforgiven chapters. Created in 807.M37, the Angels of Retribution are tasked with the preservation of secrecy concerning the existence of the Fallen and their treason during the Horus Heresy. Before their creation, a meeting of the senior members of the Unforgiven Inner Circle was held to determine possible options to respond to the growing threat of discovery by the Imperium at large of the Unforgiven's secret. The creation of a special taskforce tasked with hunting down those with any knowledge of the secret or those seeking after it was deemed necessary by Supreme Grand Master Gideon. Due to the interest of all the Unforgiven chapters in this goal, the Angels of Retribution were not created in the normal manner of successors. Instead, it was decided that each Unforgiven chapter would provide marines for inclusion into the chapter. These marines were to be the veterans of many campaigns, with differing levels of knowledge depending on post.
The members of the Angels of Retribution's Tactical, Devastator, and Bike squads are company veterans that have been selected for possible inclusion into an Unforgiven chapter's 1st company. These veterans have been emotionally and psychologically prepared over the years for the shock of learning the Unforgiven's secret. Though they are not privy to the secret as of yet, their preparation has made them more likely to follow orders form their superiors in situations where they must attack Imperial forces, as long as there is a justification that they can accept. Due to their years in the Unforgiven's ranks, this justification can be as simple as being told the forces are a danger to the Chapter, and thus the Imperium.
The squad leaders of the Angels of Retribution and all members of the Fist of Judgement are members from the Unforgiven's 1st companies. These marines are privy to the secret of the Unforgiven, and thus understand the importance of the Angels of Retribution's mission. As such, they are willing and unhesitant to direct their squads to initiate actions against other servants of the Imperium if so directed by the leaders of the chapter.
All the chapters leadership positions are filled by members of the Inner Circles of the many Unforgiven chapters. These leaders are dedicated to the mission of preserving the secret, and all the current chapter leaders were all handpicked by Azrael for their position. Their furor and determination in the righting of the Unforgiven's wrongs are what qualified them for their post, and they lead the Chapter into battle in a state of righteous fury, demanding that those who threaten the Unforgiven be punished for their presumption.
Homeworld
Due to the lack of recruitment for the chapter, it has no need of a homeworld. Instead, the Angels of Retribution operate from a chapter fleet of 3 Strike Crusiers and 1 Battle Barge. Smaller transports of many types are also used by the chapter to transport strike teams. This fleet of transports allows the Angels of Retribution to operate across the Imperium. By not having a homeworld, the Angels of Retribution free their members from any garrisoning duties as well.
The Battle Barge of the fleet, the Sword of Condemnation was originally a Dark Angels Battle Barge, but was re-purposed for use by the Angels of Retribution. It has a rich history and has served the chapter admirably in its 4,000 years of service with them. From this ship, Grand Master Damion directs the chapter in their galaxy wide hunt for enemies of the Unforgiven, as well as leading it into battle in times of greater engagements.
Due to the chapter's small size, the Battle Barge is not needed for its large transport capacity. Thus, many of its areas have been converted over to extra weapon mounts, ammunition storage, redundant systems, and armor. As such, the Battle Barge has a fighting ability somewhat above its already impressive capabilities. This has allowed the Sword of Condemnation to strike into areas in which the orbital garrison might be prohibitive in other circumstances. The extra armor and weaponry allows the ship to hold off the garrison for long enough for the ground elements to accomplish their mission. The reinforced armor and redundant systems in particular allow the Battle Barge to shrug off hits that might cripple other ships of similar tonnage. It has developed a reputation as a tough, reliable ship that always carries its crew through the danger of orbital insertion. The crew has extreme confidence in its capabilities and does not hesitate to take it into hazardous situations if so ordered.
Organization and Battle Doctrine
The Angels of Retribution are structured into three companies, the Fist of Judgement, the Blade of Persecution, and the Hammer of Fate. The Fist of Judgment is the Deathwing analog of the force, but is much smaller, numbering only 25 terminators with Dreadnought support. The Blade of Persecution is separated into two forces, each composed of bikers with a small amount of Land Speeder and Dreadnought suport. Finally, the Hammer of Fate is three forces of power armored marines, comprised of tactical squads and devastators. All sections of a company answer to one Master, but are split so as to increase tactical flexibility.
The chapter organization chart works out as such:
Grand Master Damion answers directly to the Inner Circle, and thus Supreme Grand Master Azrael. He also personally leads the Fist of Judgement on the field of battle.
The Angels of Retribution rarely send more than a squad or two of Marines on missions, as many of their tasks are accomplished with little resistance. For such missions, a force leader is selected from the company leaderships, and squads are assigned as needed from the three companies. However, on the occasions when the target of an attack is an enemy combatant and is in hostile territory, it is not unheard of for half the chapter or more to deploy together. As such, the marines are very familiar with fighting with elements of other companies. Due to their specialized nature and small size, the Angels of Retribution stress tactical flexibility, speed, and preparation. Many missions are executed with Drop pod assault supported by Thunderhawk deployment of heavy vehicles.
In larger engagements, if an Angels of Retribution force includes an element from the Blade of Persecution, these marines are deployed first to scout out the location of the target and hem them in. Once the Blade of Persecution has made contact, the element of the Hammer of Fate will insert on the perimeter with drop pods and secure the area, freeing up the Blade of Persecution to attack the enemy in weak areas and use their greater speed to engage the enemy in many areas. While this occurs, the Hammer of Fate element tightens the perimeter, ensuring that none in the area escape while also support the Blade of Persecution. When a vector of attack is determined, the Blade of Persecution will gather to press in on the weakness, striking deep into the heart of the enemy. At this same moment, the Hammer elements begin to fully attack the enemy. When the Blade of Persecution reaches the interior of the enemy formation, they all activate their teleport homers, feeding an abundance of information to their orbital element. Using this information, the Fist of Judgement element will teleport and drop pod (for the dreadnoughts) into the center of the enemy, tearing out their heart and crushing them against the marines attacking from the perimeter. Through this strategy, the Angels of Retribution are able to quickly accomplish their mission and move onto their next target.
Beliefs
The Angels of Retribution are shaped by the beliefs of their members, who originate from chapters with slightly different beliefs concerning the Fallen and the Unforgiven's guilt. However, common to all members is a knowledge that those who seek after knowledge of the Fallen are a danger to the Imperium at large, as if the Fallen were made public, it would cause a schism within the Adeptus Terra in regard to the Unforgiven, hampering the ability of the Unforgiven to defend the Imperium against its enemies. While not as numerous as the Ultramarines and their successors, the Dark Angels and their successors still constitute a not-insignificant number of chapters. The Angels of Retribution thus see themselves as doing the best thing for the Imperium, even if it entails eliminating Imperium servants.
In regards to their Primarch, Lion El'Jonson, The Angels of Retribution hold a great reverence. In their eyes, the Lion constantly worked for the good of the Imperium, doing great things in the name of the Emperor and for the whole of humanity. Conversely, in Luthor they see the danger of placing yourself above the good of those you are tasked to protect. Thus, The Angels of Retribution are less likely to disengage from a battle zone if there are Imperial citizens that need protecting. However, due to their small size, they must sometimes accept that there is little they can do in a situation and forced to disengage or be destroyed. This conflict of beliefs and duties is a heavy burden to bear for the members chapter. To lessen the pain of abandoning Imperial citizens to their fate, the marines of the chapter on occasion commit to a battle that has no relation to their duties to the Unforgiven, instead fighting solely for the Imperium and its servants. While these campaigns are few, rare, and only possible when no targets are identified, they serve to strengthen the marines resolve and also act as a crucible in which to test the progress of the veterans deemed possible 1st company inductees.
Gene Seed
The Angels of Retribution, due to their recruiting from Unforgiven Chapters, do not have an individualized gene seed. They do not normally collect the gene seed of marines whose Progenoid glands have matured, only doing so if that marine falls in combat to return the Progenoid gland to the marine's original chapter. The Angels of Retribution marines are free of mutation or failed glands, just like all Unforgiven marines. In the purity of their gene seed, the Angels of Retribution see both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that they are as the Emperor created them, fully ready to fight in his name. A curse in that there is no easy answer as to why the Fallen turned from the light of the Emperor, no mutation or failing they can blame their actions on. Instead, the marines must accept that the ability to turn traitor exists in them all and must be constantly guarded against.
Battle Cry
"Never to forgive, never to forget" -Unforgiven Proverb
"No sin left unpunished!" (Yelled by sergeant) "No transgression left unanswered!" (Answer by battle-brothers) -Battle Cry

Ravenous that is a terrible color for lettering of folks who use subsilver or low bandwith. It is virtually unreadable.

Re: Create a Space Marine Chapter!
I haven't had the time or space to do much with my 40k for the past year or two, and the 5th edition Space Marine codex pretty much killed my Chapter dead. Still, I was very happy with what I had put together for 4th edition:
Knights Astral
Geneseed: Imperial Fists, sons of Rogal Dorn.
Color Scheme: Argent and azure, with plenty of gold trim and ornamentation.
Description:
The Knights Astral are an Imperial Fists successor, and share many traits common in the sons of Dorn. They are honorable, devoted warriors and crusaders, and affect similar aesthetic styles to their Black Templar brothers. They recruit from a string of loosely-federated worlds, most of them feudal, wherein the Knights Astral hold a position of respect amongst the population. Although they do not govern the worlds directly, many venerable commanders and ancients of the Chapter frequently serve as military and political advisors whose word carries a great deal of weight amongst the various governments of their worlds. The planets uphold knightly and chivalric traditions, in large part painstakingly maintained by the Knights Astral themselves.
The Chapter's artificers craft and modify power armor in a style very reminiscent of their home worlds. Veterans of the Chapter earn the right to display their personal heraldry in battle, and often do so with elaborate tabards and surcoats. The power sword is considered to be the Chapter's signature weapon, and many Knights seek to emulate the ancient heroes of the Chapter by adopting fighting styles that make use of storm shields and combat shields. Heavy support weapons are considered to be a novice's choice, and the structure of the Chapter deviates from the Codex accordingly. Devastators are particularly few, as newly-minted Knights-Bachelor wish to make a name for themselves and take up the chainsword as soon as they are able. Thus, most of the Chapter's heavy weapons are relegated to the 10th Company, where young Squires are deployed with missile launchers and heavy bolters to support their more experienced brothers.
The Chapter's most accomplished and feared warriors go on to become Paladins in the 1st Company. Holy suits of Tactical Dreadnought armor are rare, so the Terminators are supplemented by formations of Paladins armored in the masterful artificer armors of the Chapter's forge. Senior officers of the Chapter assemble personal retinues of Paladins, a resplendent and awe-inspiring force on the battlefield around which their brothers rally.

Swords of the Emperor
Chapter Master: Aengus Yannic of the Mackenzie
Geneseed: Imperial Fists
Homeworld: Albanova, Segmentum Ultima
Color Scheme: Predominantly (Reaper) Armor Grey with Red Gore and Silver highlights; Bleached Bone denotes veteran status or having achieved significant battlefield honors.
History and Associations: A generally average chapter founded sometime in M35, the Swords of the Emperor have distinguished themselves in fighting primarily against the menace of the Orks and most recently the Tyranids. They have formed close associations with the Ordo Xenos, including certain sects that have been known to associate with the Eldar. This behavior has been questioned by elements of the Ordo Hereticus, but the success of the Broadsword Campaign, where the Swords 4th Company put a stop to Waaaagh Grimfang with the assistance of Inquistor Taelon and a force from Craftworld Yanno, cannot be denied. Broadsword saved four major Imperial worlds from the Greenskin menace, and the defense had previously been estimated to cost fifteen Guardsmen regiments and fifteen years of production from those worlds.
The Swords are organizationally somewhat different from many other chapters. They operate as self-contained units, with companies maintaining their own small forces of veterans, heavy weapons specialists, scouts, and close assault troops. This also includes armor support. Each company is provided with its own combat capable spacecraft, enabling each self-contained company to deploy quickly across the chapter's area of responsibility or respond to a call for assistance elsewhere in the Imperium.
Albanova is a technologically advanced world, that maintained its civilization through the collapse of galactic civilization and was incorporated into the Imperium early on in the Emperor's Grand Crusade. As a result, the Adeptus Mechanicus does not have sovereignty over the forges and factories of Albanova, a fact which has proven extremely useful to both the Swords of the Emperor and the Ordo Xenos over the years.
In battle, the Swords eschew close combat unless necessary, preferring instead to deliver punishing firepower in a precise fashion. Land Raiders are generally not utilized, with more flexible platforms such as Predators, Land Speeders, and Dreadnoughts being preferred. Most veterans operate as Sternguard, with master crafted bolters from Albanova's forges, often equipped with one-shot melta charges to provide the veterans with an anti-tank punch. Terminator armor exists in the chapter, and when utilized, is often employed via deepstrike, either by teleporter or by drop pod.
(Out of universe observations: The Swords would be involved with elements of the Ordo Xenos that have realized that making common cause with factions like the eldar and tau-is the only way the Imperium is going to survive. It's better for the Imperium to survive, maybe a bit smaller, with neighbors, than for Chaos and the Nids and the Necrons to tear everything down around them. They also recognize that something is Not Right with the AdMech. Albanova, while not the center of an empire like Ultramar, maintained its techbase and maintains the form of the machine cult while preserving some of the old ways. The problem is they've had to keep things like the scientific method alive, in secret, for 10,000...and that's not really workable. They'd be further ahead of the AdMech if it came to actually reinventing the wheel, if if a STC was recovered and needed to be deciphered, but it's not like they have a real R&D base or anything.
In terms of combat, I think it's fucking retarded to charge forward in a scifi game and beat something over the head with a sharpened stick. I want to shoot things with lasers and bullets and missiles. My space marine chapter reflects that. I'll post a picture a bit later.)

Re: Create a Space Marine Chapter!
No pictures I'm afraid, the fluff will have to suffice:
The Hellrazers Legion, descendents of the lost Eleventh Legion, trapped by warp storms in a star cluster far in the galactic north since M32. Within this cluster they expanded, grew and conquered. As they retained pre-Heresy knowledge of gene-tech, it is much easier for them to create new Space Marines, allowing them to field a much larger force than is the norm.
Instead of one Chapter and Companies, it is divided up into three Brigades, subdivided into Regiments (led by Majors) and Battle and Support Companies (led by Captains). The price of the easier creation method is much less expierence per Marine, and a slightly less robust physique. The Legion's commanders feel this is a more than acceptable trade-off.
Legion Commander: Marshall Asmodeus Khan.
1st Brigade Commander: Colonel Anton Adama
2nd Brigade Commander: Colonel Harlan Weissmann
3rd Brigade Commander: Colonel Dimitri Kursk
Homeworld: Dysprosium
Colour Scheme: Burning orange base, with black shoulder pads edged in white. Captains have the left shoulder pad in shining gold, Majors the right in gold and Colonels have both in gold. Chest eagles picked out in mithril silver with blood-red boltguns.
Combat doctrine notes:
The Legion has no dedicated psykers. Some of the officers have psychic powers, but they are minor and they stay with their forces, rather than forming their own group.
Because of the less-experienced individual Marines, multiple squads will act together against a single objective, in a platoon-scale formation led by Veteran Sergeants.
Melee combat is eschewed in favour of close-range weapons. As a result, a greater number of Marines can be seen carrying flamers and melta guns than normal squads. No tactical squad can have a heavy weapon, that is left to the Devastator squads. Instead, they have another assault weapon.
As a result of that weaponry choice, the Legion prizes close-range fire and combat over all else.
The Legion aims for mobility above all in it's combat formations, as a result there is a large number of Land Speeders of various types than is the norm. Each company has organic Land Speeder Squadrons and also Bike squads. Every tactical squad also has Rhinos that tend to have supercharged engines.
Predators are deployed in armoured fist formations to break lines whilst Vindicators are used to smash strong points, lest the force be held up for too long.
Ornamentation is frowned upon heavily in the Hellrazers. It is almost unheard of for officers or Sergeants to fight in battle without a helmet. The only way in which an officer's armour may differ from the standard trooper is the aforementioned golden shoulderpads to denote rank. No one goes into battle carrying a banner or a standard, such things exist but are never risked on the battlefield.
Some History:
Although it has been trapped far from Terra and essentially hidden from the Imperium at large, it's influence is felt across a large area. Several large Tyranid forces have been dispatched by the Hellrazers before they reached Imperial space, as well as an Eldar Craftworld corrupted by the Dark Eldar in 595.M36.
Unknowingly, Hellrazers ships have been sighted by Imperial vessels in several engagements, but the strike cruisers and battle barges adhere to the Legion philosphy of not showing banners and badges to avoid identification.

Re: Create a Space Marine Chapter!
This is going to be purely text, for lack of both working camera, scanner, and anything vaguely resembling image manipulating skills.
Lions of Caledon
Homeworld; Caledonia-
large, relatively low density planet, surface gravity works out to about 1.14 'g'; roughly 65% water, basically habitable, very tectonic- repeated upheavals create large fissure and mountain forming zones, deep valleys and strongly cellular, regional weather patterns making the planet virtually a hive world in reverse- majority habitable, certain specific microclimate- locked locations, the industrial deep valleys, are toxic hellholes. Caledonia is very much a world of two halves, open sweeping mountain ranges contrasted sharply with metal- bashing urban warrens, and the Chapter takes full advantage of both.
Population 34.29 billion, tithe grade Adeptus Non, major economic activities light and heavy industry, spacecraft, military and civilian planetary vehicles, etc, etc; as the nearest thing obtainable to an independent forge world, the only limit on the amount of business Caledonia can find to do is how much leeway they have that decade with the Mechanicus- and a high proportion of their business is done with the cult anyway. There are not merely one but four large staryard complexes in orbit, and the quality of their output is a matter of planetary pride- insult at your peril.
The Chapter take full advantage of this of course, and maintain a space fleet of comparable strength (and very unconventional composition) to the Sector Battlefleet, a high proportion of which was built and is maintained by the Caledonian yards anyway;
three Grand Cruisers, seven Cruisers, eleven Light Cruisers, twenty-seven heavy destroyers, fifteen destroyers, and an Eldar Aconite-class frigate captured and being held for study, officially the chapter master's yacht.
The rest of the system- three other rocky planets, one 5x mass of Terra, known as Doonsooth, access to which is rigidly controlled by Gretna Station. It has a mythic role in the life of the common people, and rather more practically it is the source of most of the raw materials that feed Caledonian forges.
Three gas giants- Eck (yellow-orange), Billy (pale cyan), Tim (greenish-yellow); by a quirk or simply a warped sense of humour, the moons of the largest gas giant are all named James, counting in order from the nearest to the parent planet, James I, out to the smallest captured-asteroid James XCVII. This is also believed to have historical significance, but what it is no-one can any longer say.
Genetic heritage of the chapter is uncertain; they have claimed, almost certainly as a practical joke aimed at the White Consuls commander's blood pressure, to be a successor chapter of the Luna Wolves, but the untruth of this is self-evident.
Rather more credibly they may be that extreme rarity a successor of the Space Wolves, probably not pure but mixed in with a second or third generation Fists or less likely Ultras descended seed to mute the Wolves' notorious eccentricities- and give the Lions room to develop their own.
Most of it works; the Sus-an Membrane and Mucranoid have become corrupt and no longer function effectively, the Ossmodula and Biscopea have started to display alarming interactions with the local genome, in some cases resulting in overgrowth to the point where the adult Marine (almost invariably Highland- born marines suffer from this) is unable to fit into a standard crew seat or suit of power armour, and there are quirks of hypersensitivity with the Occulobe and Lyman's Ear that do tend to support the idea that there is some Space Wolf in the chapter's seed.
One of their more noticeable eccentricities is the astonishingly high proportion of Techmarines in the chapter- although very loosely conformist to Mechanicus theory and doctrine, considering the amount of heavy metal the chapter can deploy it's probably not an exaggeration to say that more than half of them can function as a techmarine, even if not certified and sanctified as such. The Lowland half of the chapter at least seems to have a natural gift for it, and even most of the chapter's sword- swinging loonies get the hang of it eventually.
Ties with the Mechanicus are strong, many of the sector cult adepts hailing from Caledonia originally- although there is at least as much an element of rivalry between them and the Cult as there would be between any two forge worlds, if not more.
The Chapter has roughly forty accredited chaplains, and apparently enjoys suffering from religion to the extend that there are at least ninety identifiable variations of the Imperial faith circulating, several of them actually with less than one whole member. Internal schisms, fissionings, reunifications, doctrinal conferences- they are all stubborn to a fault with a passion for detail, and the sole reason the chapter is not a fervent breeding ground for heresy is that hardly anyone apart from themselves can understand any of it. There are strong and distinct traces of pre-Imperial cult influence in many of these.
Psychics are a relatively touchy subject, most coming from the highland half of the chapter, and most of the highlanders claiming at least a minor touch of it, what used to be called second sight a long time ago on Earth. Caledonia probably was an Eldar maiden-world, and the occasional relic turns up, there may have been some longer lasting influence. Very high powered psykers are the exception, though- the Chapter does have a relatively large number of moderately powerful Librarians.
Their relationship with the ordos of the inquisition is complicated and frequently adversarial; at the very best they may ignore a request from the Ordo Hereticus, which the vast majority of them seem to hold in contempt; or actively oppose them. They certainly will not allow a member of the Hereticus to carry out judgement on any planet they consider theirs or under their protection.
The relationship tends to be warmer with the Ordo Xenos, although rather more so with the radical end of the spectrum there, albeit with personal exceptions. Strangely the situation is the exact opposite with the third of them, the Lions being almost always willing to supply conventional force to back the efforts of the Ordo Malleus, although seeming to identify more strongly with the militant puritan tendency. Rumours of at least one Inquisitor being eaten and thus put to the omophagea appear to be, regrettably, well founded.
Organisation does not so much respect the codex as micturate upon it from tropopausal altitude; there are nineteen active companies, each one breaking down into four Sections- Naval, Aerospace, Armour, Combined Arms. The last being the relatively traditional bit. The precise composition of the company varies according to what is assigned and operative at the time, but they are a very metal- heavy Chapter, who do not send a Marine when it is possible to send a Marine with a tank backing him up, and would not send just a Marine and a tank if it was possible to squeeze a starfighter or two in there as well.
Strangely, there are actually about a thousand active rifle-strength battle brothers, and the full nominal strength of a Company is usually around fifty to sixty- which is considered to be sufficient pro-forma compliance with the Codex. Including specialists and vehicle crews, however, that number could easily rise to three hundred actual Brothers, and including reliefs and base facilities seven or eight thousand in the Chapter, total.
Wargear for those not on the front- line strength is essentially whatever works for them, being as how Caledonia is near as dammit a forge world there are very few practical restrictions, and it is not uncommon for Raider and Rhino crews to be more heavily armed than the Brothers they carry.
The Lions are quite fond of energy weapons, make heavy use of meltas and plasma guns- professing that there is no secret to the plasma thing at all, it's all down to quality control and good workmanship and a well made plasma gun is no more dangerous to it's user than any other small slice of nuclear hell. Multilasers are a common heavy weapon choice against highly numerous enemies, and the chapter does have one unique idiosyncrasy, a single- barrel multilaser or 'unilaser'- retains reach and power, without the rate of fire obviously, theoretically issued to sniper-scouts but actually seems to be catching on as an increasingly popular choice within the body of the Chapter.
They do make use of captured Xenos wargear to a thoroughly unseemly degree; in addition to the yacht there are several other items, including an Eldar pirate cruiser and several Tau ships captured, with of course the wargear of their crew and troop complements. Relatively little of this has been sanctified and modified for human use, the blessing and binding process being time-consuming and chancy, and some of it was subsequently given back, but there are a few items including grav-tanks of both races deployed by the lower- numbered companies, and personal weapons carried as trophies by officers of the Chapter.
The standard division between Assault, Tactical, Devastator goes completely out of the window- the Lions of Caledon recognise Lowland, Highland and Borderer squads;
of which the Highlanders are equipped nominally with bolters, and most do indeed do so- as many as one in two can change the bolter for an alternative basic weapon, usually a flamer or melta, occasionally a plasma gun, but they are essentially the assault force, carrying in addition to the longarm either a power shield usually referred to as a targe and a power or chain sword, or a two-handed power sword commonly called a Claymore.
Lowlanders, by contrast, tend to be the firepower fiends of the Chapter, as many as one in two replacing their bolter with a heavier weapon. At the grade of reliability the Carron manufactories can achieve, heavy plasma guns are a feasible choice, otherwise lascannon and multilasers, with multimeltas preferred for city fighting and missile launchers chiefly used for special effects rounds, or by the occasional Codex- reverencing traditionalist.
Borderer squads are the fast mobile units, equipped with land speeders if available, xenos or relic jetbikes if enough can be scraped together, or a mix of one and two man raiding bikes if nothing flying can be allocated.
Terminator suits are relatively common, the chapter being more than usually able to maintain and renovate, and even occasionally manufacture such; they are not concentrated, with usually one or two squads assigned to each company. They also come in Lowland and Highland patterns, Highland Terminators are not that far off the Codex standard, occasionally substituting a power claymore for the usual powerfist and a melta or twin-plasma gun for the storm bolter, storm shield and power claymore a frequent combination. Lowland Terminators tend to heavy weapons, and it is not uncommon to find Cyclone multilaunchers, Assault Cannon, and meltas- all on the same Marine.
Dreadnoughts are not an independent thing, and are usually deployed as part of a Terminator squad replacing the fifth member, or alternatively the chapter only lets Dreadnoughts out with a Terminator escort.
Example- XIV coy Lions of Caledon;
naval section, under the direct control of the company commander, two Glaive bombard frigates (modified Gladius, itself an evolution of the Navy standard Sword frigate), three Beacon pursuit frigates (uprated Nova frigates, which are already uprated Firestorm frigates);
Aerospace section; four Thunderhawk Gunship, four Imperial Navy- pattern Starhawk bombers, one genuine relic Thunderbolt heavy armed dropship and three modern copies, eight transport Thunderhawk
Armour section;
tank element Damocles variant command Rhino, Brightblade (Baneblade w/all las weapons), three Mk IVc Predator, three Leman Russ Excutioner-
artillery element three guard Manticore heavy missile launchers, three Whirlwind multilaunchers, four Hunter ADATS
Combined arms section;
Lowland Terminator squad in Spartan terminator-carrier variant Land Raider
Lowland squad split between Land Raider Helios, Razorback Rhino
Lowland squad split between two Razorback Rhino
Highland terminator squad in Spartan- variant Land Raider
Highland squad split between Land Raider Helios and Razorback Rhino
Highland squad split between two Razorback Rhino
Borderer squad equipped with two Land Speeder Tempest, three Land Speeder Tornado
four Rapier towed laser cannon, one by each Land Raider
six towed Thudd Guns, one by each Rhino

The standard division between Assault, Tactical, Devastator goes completely out of the window- the Lions of Caledon recognise Lowland, Highland and Borderer squads;
of which the Highlanders are equipped nominally with bolters, and most do indeed do so- as many as one in two can change the bolter for an alternative basic weapon, usually a flamer or melta, occasionally a plasma gun, but they are essentially the assault force, carrying in addition to the longarm either a power shield usually referred to as a targe and a power or chain sword, or a two-handed power sword commonly called a Claymore.
Example- XIV coy Lions of Caledon;
naval section, under the direct control of the company commander, two Glaive bombard frigates (modified Gladius, itself an evolution of the Navy standard Sword frigate), three Beacon pursuit frigates (uprated Nova frigates, which are already uprated Firestorm frigates);
Aerospace section; four Thunderhawk Gunship, four Imperial Navy- pattern Starhawk bombers, one genuine relic Thunderbolt heavy armed dropship and three modern copies, eight transport Thunderhawk
Armour section;
tank element Damocles variant command Rhino, Brightblade (Baneblade w/all las weapons), three Mk IVc Predator, three Leman Russ Excutioner-
artillery element three guard Manticore heavy missile launchers, three Whirlwind multilaunchers, four Hunter ADATS
Combined arms section;
Lowland Terminator squad in Spartan terminator-carrier variant Land Raider
Lowland squad split between Land Raider Helios, Razorback Rhino
Lowland squad split between two Razorback Rhino
Highland terminator squad in Spartan- variant Land Raider
Highland squad split between Land Raider Helios and Razorback Rhino
Highland squad split between two Razorback Rhino
Borderer squad equipped with two Land Speeder Tempest, three Land Speeder Tornado
four Rapier towed laser cannon, one by each Land Raider
six towed Thudd Guns, one by each Rhino

I actually chose that name because Howeder's last name reminds me of it.Connor MacLeod wrote:

Begging your pardon, but on a world with over 32 billion on it, do you even have any "Highland" left, or is the planet all Hives now?
"The 4th Earl of Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

Re: Create a Space Marine Chapter!
Hives could probably have population density on par with that of, say, Tokyo, without too much difficulty. Stick 30 billion people on the planet under those conditions and you would theoretically need about six million square kilometers of land. By comparison, the land surface area of the Earth is 150 million square kilometers.KlavoHunter wrote:Begging your pardon, but on a world with over 32 billion on it, do you even have any "Highland" left, or is the planet all Hives now?
The real question is where food and resource extraction for the hives is handled, as always... but if Armageddon can feed themselves, so can New Caledon, I'd think.

If about a fifth of it resembled New York or Singapore, the rest could be rather wild pretty easily, actually.KlavoHunter wrote:Begging your pardon, but on a world with over 32 billion on it, do you even have any "Highland" left, or is the planet all Hives now?
@ Eleventh: The Swords and the Lions actually doctrine-wise sound very similar and for a number of the same reasons.

STEEL CRUSADERS
PRIMARCH: Ferrus Manus.
SYMBOL: A raptor's talon superimposing a cross, worn on the left shoulder.
COLORS: Steel-gray and blood-red.
BATTLE CRY: "For all Mankind!" is the official battle cry, but Crusaders often prefer their parent Chapters'.
They appear as silver shadows, cast wherever the Crusade for Knowledge takes the magi. They are the scalpel with which the Fabricator-General may remove vital technology from Man's enemies: Steel Crusaders, Space Marines seconded to the Adeptus Mechanicus. With the Mechanicus aiding the Marines by improving arms already far superior to another Chapter's, the Crusaders are rightfully feared by those they face in battle, and rightfully hated by those who covet their technological secrets-- or whose secrets they seized in the Machine God's name.
The Crusaders know Man, physically weak compared to other species, depends on technology to survive; from a hunter's knife to a guardsman's lasgun, technology alone provides the strength to match and even overcome Man's enemies. The Crusaders will face any foe to save the human race-- or create one as they loot Eldar ruins and other xeno sites, defying Inquisitors who dare deny them the artifacts they seek.
Marines, from the Iron Hand Chapter and its successors, serve the duration of a crusade (an average of 20 years). Upon entry, the Chapter symbol is moved to the right shoulder, and the Marine repaints his armor.
FOUNDING: M36.
During Goge Vandire's Reign of Blood, the Fabricator-General founded the Steel Confessors: a "ceramite wall" to protect the Adeptus Mechanicus from the Ecclesiarch's excesses. As the Confessors were not a Space Marine Chapter, the Fabricator-General deemed it unnecessary to ask the other High Lords for permission. After Vandire's fall, the Confessors were tasked with "preventing the spread of techno-heresy,"-- in other words, deny the Inquisition an excuse to interfere with the Mechanicus' affairs.
In the 41st millennium, a Tyranid Hive Fleet attacked the forge world of Kalevala, the Confessors' main base. The Marines repulsed the foul xenos, but at heavy cost: a 69% casualty rate. The surviving officers, from the Confessors and their parent Chapters, found fault in what was once "healthy competition" between the Clans, e.g., the Sons of Medusa Techmarines were unable to repair the Brazen Claws' Predator Hellfire tanks, because they were not cross-trained to maintain equipment another Chapter developed, denying the Confessors heavy support.
Ferrus Manus' sons formed a Tech Council to coordinate inter-Chapter efforts, plan joint training exercises, standardize communication protocols and Rites of Maintenance. The Steel Confessors changed colors to commemorate those lost on Kalevala. When the Astronomican began failing, the Fabricator-General ordered a "Crusade for Knowledge" to repair the Golden Throne; the Confessors volunteered to a man, and were renamed the "Steel Crusaders."

Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Re: Create a Space Marine Chapter!
once again resubmitting:
Rodent Guard, they who take the piss, dear omnimessiah what are they doing to that bike, we had a name once but they deleted it.
geneseed: the original chapter was supposed to get good pure Ultramarines Geneseed, instead they got baldly damaged Raven Guard samples, funny thing is their practically expendable....
homeworld: formally a proto-forge world, reduced to a desert landscape after too many ork rox hit important reactors.
Specialty: night fighting (of course an entire chapter of colour-blind albinos who can't hit a titan from inside it...), also good at space hulks, and tunnel fighting.
Unfortunatly the ship that was supposed to contain the chapter's proper templates from Mars was lost on a seperate voyage, along with the chapter's first tech priests was lost to the warp. Fortunatly the chapter was able to found it's own tech priest auxilleries by eating too many ork Mek-Boyz. (Their gear is fairly drab, primer grey, and frequently looks kitbashed)
geneseed flaws: the entire chapter can't breath in vacume, is subsectable to sun burn, hates bright light, can't see color, are albinos, yet their geneseed reaches maturation faster and failing death in combat is more adapatble to emplantation than any others.
Polly Olly: allegedly has happeed to this chapter on one or more canidates, they still just eneded up as three meter tall killing machines with no visible secondary sex traits after the black carapace was added....
