Mike Huckabee's Xenophobic BS

Post by Jim Raynor »

CNN wrote:Mike Huckabee said Monday that President Obama's world view is most certainly colored by where he grew up.

The problem? Huckabee appears to falsely believe the president grew up in Kenya.

"I would love to know more. What I know is troubling enough," Huckabee said of the president in an interview with New York radio station WOR. "And one thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, very different than the average American."

Huckabee, the former presidential candidate and current Fox News host who has said he is thinking about mounting another campaign, added, "his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British are a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather."

A transcript and audio of the interview was circulated by MediaMatters, a liberal media watchdog group.

Obama, whose father is Kenyan, in fact grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia.

But in the interview with WOR's Steve Malzberg, Huckabee repeated his stance that he does not doubt the president was born in the United States.

"I know the Clintons…and believe me, they have lots of investigators out on him, and I'm convinced if there was anything that they could have found on that, they would have found it, and I promise they would have used it," Huckabee said.

Huckabee spokesman Hogan GIdley told CNN the comment was nothing more than a misstatement, telling CNN the former governor meant to say the President grew up in Indonesia.

However, the Mau Mau rebellion, referenced in Huckabee's comments, was an uprising in Kenya that occurred from 1952 to 1960 when an anti-colonial group, the Mau Mau, rebelled against the British in an attempt to gain independence from British rule and remove European settlers from the country.

"When the Governor mentioned he wanted to know more about the President, he wasn't talking about the President's place of birth – the Governor believes the President was born in Hawaii," Gidley said. "The Governor would however like to know more about where President Obama's liberal policies come from and what else the President plans to do to this country – as do most Americans."
So, Huckabee appeals to the xenophobic Birther demographic, and he wasn't smart enough to get the facts straight before shooting his mouth? Then when he's called on it, his spokesman completely lies about which country he had actually meant to say despite all the context that Huckabee gave?

I saw this story covered on MSNBC today, by two or three separate anchors. NONE of them pointed out the simple truth that all the context of Huckabee's words (Mau Mau revolution, Kenyan forefathers) meant that the "Indonesia" excuse was complete bullshit. I repeat: They caught a leading GOP presidential hopeful making himself look like a bigoted, dishonest imbecile, and they said nothing aside from plainly reporting the interview. Is this what passes as hard-hitting reporting on the "liberal" network? Because when Fox gets some rhetorical material like this, they don't hesitate to use it.

How the hell can any proud patriotic American condemn or say any shit about people rising up against the British? Maybe someone should say that the Mau Maus were rebelling because of British taxes and representation, and thus Huckabee is implicitly supporting British taxes and representation, and is thus a subhuman liberal socialist communazi...

Huckabee works for Faux News. Getting facts wrong that paint liberals in a "bad" light is part of the job description.

It's completely different when the people rising up against the British are brown. Little brown brothers don't have the right to do that, you see?

I'm going to dub Huckabee The Bedsheet on the grounds that he thinks God appointed him to sniff Natalie Portman's sheets, and his racist Birther bullshit shows that he probably wears bedsheets, too.

Despite that she's engaged too, to the father. OH NOES A COUPLE MONTHS LATE

I'd say it's a coded condemnation of premarital sex and essentially calling her a whore, but it's not in code.

Anyone noticed that Huckabee has gone off the deep end lately? At the time of his appearance on the Colbert Report he seemed to be among the most tempered and rational potential Republican candidates. Granted, that's not saying much, but still... Its like his handlers suddenly told them he wasn't "tea party enough" and he stepped it up a notch.

Venue probably has a lot to do with it. On Colbert, he's trying to win over those on the middle of the road, so he has to appear as though he's reasonable, and unlikely to eat your babies. On right-wing radio, he's trying to reach those who are already going to vote Republican, so he has to be more Republican than the next guy.

If so, that's going to bite him in the ass when election season starts proper and he can't do both and each group sees him contradicting (or whatever) himself. It won't hurt his standings among Republicans, per se, but it'll stomp him with independents.

Huckabee is unlikely to run. He just bought a million-dollar house in Florida and he may need his Fox salary to properly pay for it; also, he has recently complained about how much campaigning sucks, particularly fund-raising.

Huckabee may be the type who prefers money to power. His recent loony statements have come just as he is on a book tour, so he benefits financially from the extra attention.

Then why take the middle road stance on Colbert?

Mike Huckabee is a fundamentalist moron, but the fact that he actually believes in Christianity (all of it, including the things Jesus said about class), means that he has, in the past, said some things that are pretty inconvenient to the GOP and their "more money for us, fuck you" platform. Looks like he's being broken of that.

Maybe it's all about selling books. If he makes moves that make him look like he's going to run, then that makes him a more compelling figure to some book-buyers. Or he's actually going to run, and he's counting on the short attention span of the American voter, which, frankly, has been a winning strategy for centuries. :)

This is what I think. Huck like so many other Right wingers who started with "some integrity" (McCain I'm looking at you...)
SO many of these after first getting into the mix of the far right loose all sense of sanity and common sense. Early on in the 2008 race I had some respect for Huck he mad a Lot of the big money GOP very nervous, sure he was a fundi, but he stood by his principles. But just like McCain, in just a few years he is selling his Soul for the Far Right.

What scares me about Huck, is that besides being a fanatic, his son has done some animal torturing that he covered up....
