I'm looking into possible Netflix rentals and while I'm not the biggest Joss Whedon fan, I missed Dollhouse when it aired despite an interesting premise.
I'm curious about getting a second opinion. Is it decent sci-fi or should I avoid it?

It doesn't become something worth watching until about the end of the first season. I found the second season rather solid though.
I also recommend watching the season finales back to back after the rest of the show, they work better that way.

Very, very slow pace for 80% of the first season, then it picks up quite well. The second season is one of Whedon's better ones. So if you can suffer through the first episodes, then you might enjoy it.
However, if you want a great morality argument about the premise of it then you are pretty out of luck for the first season.

If you did not like Whedon's other works such as Buffy or Firefly you would be disappointed. On the other hand if you dug Whedon's style of characterization you might just love this show. The quirky Whedon style characters are the strong suite of this show.
That said the Dollhouse premise and it's execution is fascinating on it's own. Instead of creating a TNG style in-your-face moral dilemma it treats the subject of mind transfer and uploading much more sophisticatedly. We start to see the ramifications of this technology in an early episode where a dead woman is brought back to life by downloading her memories. The outcome of that episodes plot was rather intriguing when they explain their rationale. Overall the subject of mind transfer is dealt with very intelligently, if you can think of a way to use or abuse it chances are you would see it on Dollhouse.

I know the show got canceled abruptly, but Whedon had enough time to wrap things up.

The season finales both take place 10 years later, so anything that wasn't resolved from season two is resolved from them. That's why I recommend watching them after the entire run of Dollhouse.
