Earthquake off Japan
7.9 and 24 km deep, and 150 km from shore, CNN is running a live feed of the Tsunami hitting Japan. No link as of yet.
Edit: They are now saying it was an 8.8, a near 900% increase in power.

A live feed of a tsunami hitting Japan? Holy shi. Man.
What other areas, outside Japan, are at risk? I live in the Asia-Pacific.

Re: Earthquake off Japan
Well you might not be at risk John, but yeah, all of the Pacific basin could be effected (not big effects, but potentially higher than usual waves).

Yeah, everything's saying 8.8 now. Jesus H, that's a huge quake. I haven't seen any reports of damage yet, but they'll be coming for sure.

At any rate, Cebu is relatively safe anyway. Given the direction of the quake's epicenter, there's most of Luzon and the Nothern Visayas protecting us. I'm more concerned about the potential risk for my relatives in those areas.

Well, yeah, just because I might not be swept away doesn't mean a whole other load of people outside Japan are safe.
I just wanna know how this'll affect other guise. Like, for example, Hong Kong or something.

Ok, now it's an 8.9. That's just shy of what the Ache quake was.
Edit: CNN is saying that the Warnings now include Japan, Russia, Guam, the Marianas, and Taiwan, With Warning for other pacific islands including The Philippians and Papua New Guninea.
Shroom, they are saying it gets to your country at around 0945 GMT.

Re: Earthquake off Japan
Well, according to most sources I can see so far, the damage was relatively minor and the tsunami risk to other places was deemed minimal. Of course, "relatively minor" considering the past quakes and tsunamis in Japan to relate it to is still pretty fucking bad.Shroom Man 777 wrote:Well, yeah, just because I might not be swept away doesn't mean a whole other load of people outside Japan are safe.

EDIT: Oh, wait, update now. Apparently there's been evacuation alerts for Russia and the Marianas.

Re: Earthquake off Japan
The quake was 80 miles offshore, and no signs seem to have appeared of major underwater landslides which are what cause really large tsunamis. So its looking a lot like Japan dodged the bullet. The wave that struck shore is being described as 4 meters high.

Re: Earthquake off Japan
It looks the waves have swept away, but not always physically destroyed houses to depths of several hundred meter from the shoreline, and flooded the streets at least much as two miles inland confirmed from the air.
Edit: a 1 meter high tsunami has been detected moving outward in the Pacific. That's 1 meter in deep water, it would be much higher hitting the shore. Anyone on the Pacific rim should start taking any warnings very dead serious

Re: Earthquake off Japan
Okay, fuck, now I hope it's not that bad. I have relatives in shoreline cities up north.

Latest word from the Japanese government is that those plants have already automatically shut down.

I have family in Victoria, on Vancover Island. Not sure if their's a watch or warning in place their, but I hope they're not anywhere near the waterfront. Fortunately my mother's house is quite far in land, so I'm not too worried.
Anyway, my prayers and condolences to anyone in the effected areas.

Just watched this live feed, holy fuck there were a dozen boats chasing cars down a fucking road in the middle of a farm field filmed from a chopper, some of them were burning. That was surreal. I hope Japan will be good, but this looks like it will be bad.
