Opinions, memories & help for my fellow men!
Civilization (& Colinization) series
I remember one disasterous Civ2 game in which it took me 4000 years of continuous warfare to take a single Aztec city!
And another in which I suffered a major Nuclear attack by my best ally who just happened to be technically more advanced than me, my country was ruined & then three other countries declared war on me!
I remmber the fun of launching D-Day style invasions or of gambling that you can quickly take an enemy city with only a few units.
Any game in which these things are possible is a classic!
Colony wars
In the first game your freedom fighters in the second your fighting terrorists! Excellent spin! They are all beautiful & nigh on impossible to complete, the third one is an underrated classic & far easier to get into for the average gamer. I will never forget my disbelief at the shear amount of data you are given in the original colony wars- what do you mean you dont want the military information file on that smlll moon orbitting that small planet, well what about its general history then?
Final fantasy
Stood the test of time & evolved in so many ways. The true decider in the 'war' between the western & eastern style adventures (western style adventures had lots of freedom but no real structured plot, whilst eastern adventures were the exact opposite structured but a little linear).
Made an enormous impact when FFVII hit the big time western audience nothing in gaming history compares to the addiction one went under after witnessing that plate section collapse or clouds story of Separoth & Weissenheim or attacks by Weapon.
Somebody mentioned Turicane 1 & 2 for the C64.
I remember them but for the Amiga they were the best platform shooters I ever played, the best game on the C64 was 'Flimbos quest' it was great.
Somebody also asked how to get a version of Wing Commander Privateer...
you can get masses of Wing Commander stuff from Abandonware sites the best by a long mile being

You're entitled to your opinion, I guess. I like it. It's more entertaining to me than the NBA, at least. Or soccer (football). For some reason, I just can't handle watching soccer on TV. And before you condemn me as a knee-jerk American who has too much appreciation for violence in sports, I probably should tell you I am a die hard baseball fan....Darth Pounder wrote:Considering that American Football is one of the dullest shitist sports in the world thats not a good endorcement.

You could also argue that Final Fantasy VII was the most important game of its era, with the POSSIBLE exception of Mario 64. Forget Metal Gear Solid; Final Fantasy VII is the quintessential Playstation title.Final fantasy

Oddly with FF7...I felt it's more to do with the fact Square/Sony advertised versus actually content.Durran Korr wrote:You could also argue that Final Fantasy VII was the most important game of its era, with the POSSIBLE exception of Mario 64. Perhaps, although you really can't accuse FF7 of lacking content. In any case, FF7 is responsible for the enormous market that RPGs have today. Sony advertised the shit out of it for a good reason; they knew they were sitting on a gold mine.Ghost Rider wrote:Oddly with FF7...I felt it's more to do with the fact Square/Sony advertised versus actually content.Durran Korr wrote:You could also argue that Final Fantasy VII was the most important game of its era, with the POSSIBLE exception of Mario 64. True...it helped that it was a quality game...but literally the one thing I felt the game did was that Sony/Square finally advertised a RPG instead of relying upon the small word of mouth they so constantly did and still do.Durran Korr wrote:Perhaps, although you really can't accuse FF7 of lacking content. I mean games are persay not really advertised but think about how much the Sports game dominate the market of the Console?
Mostly because they have base name recognition with actually a moderate advertising(EA is many things...but they aren't complete morons)
With FF7...they advertised...and it paid off...I wish they would extend that thought a bit more, but it was something I saw very evident with FF7.
Content helped...but with advertising it showed that you didn't have to slot RPGs into a niche category.

It did more than that; it made grouping RPGs into the niche market a damned stupid business decision, and was probably the biggest reason the PS1 won the console war.Content helped...but with advertising it showed that you didn't have to slot RPGs into a niche category.

With the RPG...in some way(though the already had the war in many respects)Durran Korr wrote:It did more than that; it made grouping RPGs into the niche market a damned stupid business decision, and was probably the biggest reason the PS1 won the console war.Content helped...but with advertising it showed that you didn't have to slot RPGs into a niche category.
RPG are still a niche grouping at best...with 300-400K respectible sales.
FF's are the only consistent ones with millions...here or Japan(barring Dragon Quest in Japan)
But honestly Sony won the war because they basically had everyone in their corner and Sega and Nintendo were fuckin morons(sorry cart based...and Sega kept doing some stupid shit with the Saturn).
But really I would like to see more advertising persay for RPGs...becuase in general gaming...more know of Madden, then any RPG...and EA dominance is not really much about quality as much as it's just redo what the last year was, and the fans are pretty happy with that.

What other adventure game series can your character get drunk or high, passout and find himself penniless in a ditch.

Amen to that, brother. They even ripped off the nameDarth Pounder wrote:Considering that American Football is one of the dullest shitist sports in the world thats not a good endorcement.irishmick79 wrote:I know most of you aren't sports fans, but I have to give the best game series award to the Madden Football franchise. The franchise has been around for a remarkably long time, and the games continue to get better year after year. Can you think of another game that more accurately reflects it's real life counterpart so well?
Funny thing, they ripped BOTH words from something else!
