In the grim dark future of 1997, there is only SSI's underrated Final Liberation. It's a title that not many people have played, and was part of that golden era of games where crude Windows 95 compatibility was fused with equally crude live action cutscenes featuring minimum-wage actors trying their best to scowl at alien puppets. I propose to cover this underrated game with a new Let's Play. It's a bit shorter than my previous games, so should be easier to LP before the horrific tedium sets in Emperor needs me elsewhere. Also, it'd sate my retrogaming mood a bit, I think after seeing Hawkwings start up his Chaos Gate LP.

So, what is Final Liberation? Cue ridiculous video.



It's a turn-based strategy game, taking place in the Warhammer 40,000 setting. Apparently based (I don't know to what degree) on the Epic 40,000 game system, it allows you to command companies of infantry, artillery batteries, aircraft, armor squadrons, Superheavies and Titans of the Imperial Guard and Spess Mahreens to drive Orks off the planet of Volistad.

At the beginning of the campaign, your units are limited, but more can be requisitioned later. Due to um... rather unfortunate budget cuts, Segmentum Command has tasked the following to retake a whole planet:

HQ:
1 Lord Commander, and Commissar Holt

First Company:
1 Commissar, Valhallan Bodyguard, Rhino Command Vehicle.
3 Griffon Mortar Vehicles
6 Chimera Transports
1 Command Platoon, Mordian Iron Guard
1 Heavy Weapons Platoon, Mordian Iron Guard

For this LP, I plan on taking force mixtures as advised by thread posters in a narrative campaign, to mix things up a bit. Who knows, let's see how many of you I can lead to gruesome heroic deaths in the name of the Emperor?

I'm fairly sure I played this when I was a midget. Had Titans that could drop Vortex missiles on everything, IIRC

Oooh. Count me in!

I don't remember the units involved but I remembered laughing at the game rendition of close combat and its artillery.

And don't laugh at the live action. Its was honestly one of the best in its day, I dare say it beat C&C 2.

Oh man, a Final Liberation LP! I've never managed to get the game to work, and there are no other LPs for it that I can tell. I might be somewhat immoderately in love with you for this, Nephtys.

How are you getting it to run? I haven't been able to get it installed and working since Win95.

Mittens are the most essential part of a soldier's kit. They keep their hands warm which keeps the Valhallans for making fun of them for bad aim, and limits the spread of VD. The best prophylactic is a proactive prophylactic.

The game actually runs perfectly fine on my computer, which is a Quad Core 64-bit system running Vista. Which is like the oddest thing. I didn't need to modify anything, and it works flawlessly save without the FMVs, which are readily available online anyway.

I'll be posting shortly, but I made a few slight uh. Adjustments, on behalf of the Imperium.

In the Stock Game, a few things are just silly. For one, Space Marines are hilariously cut down by the dozens from even gretchin or lasgun fire. This is because for some reason, Lasguns and similar small arms are rated at 'Penetration 40', which tends to mean they will deal damage to targets between 30 to 50 armor usually. Space Marines have 20 armor. Guardsmen have 10 armor. Yes, so if Guardsmen are armored with wet tissue paper, the mighty Spess Mahreens are armored with wet tissue paper, periodically dotted with wax purity seals. Oh. And Guardsmen outgunned the marines too, since none of the Marines remembered to pack a rocket launcher.

Likewise, the Thunderhawk Gunship, mighty queen of the skies in this game, is a horrific deathtrap, and the best way ever to just get 30 of your own men killed by a single pistol shot. That's right, a Thunderhawk is vulnerable to small arms fire, which is staggeringly accurate against it even when cruising at high altitude. All that happens after is a horrific animation of the ship spinning out of control and crashing in a big explosion, pretty much killing all those valuable space marines. You never took the damn things too, since they ate up the same space on the organization chart as a Baneblade, or Titan.

Meanwhile on the ridiculously strong end of things, there's an Imperial tank called the Stormhammer. What is it, you ask? It's two terra-damned Baneblades strapped together, at a modest 20 percent cost increase over a single Baneblade! Yes, it's got four main cannons, some eight lascannons, and Emperor knows how many bolters strapped to it's hull.

So for these, I upped the Space Marines armor to be fairly resilient against small arms and gave them a heavy weapon, upped the armor on the Thunderhawk (and the cost, it was cheaper than a Chimera?!), and upped the price of the Stormhammer.

Of all the battles conducted in the Holy Emperor's name, our most prolific enemy has and likely shall always be the vile creatures known as Orks. Their number and ferocity is well known, and countless documented battles detail their capacity for cunning as well as brutality. However, the Liberation of Volistad in late M41 is a special case. Most of the victories of our the Emperor's glorious Imperial Guard and Space Marines are of course founded upon both valour, faith of our troops, and the providence of the God Emperor. However, the Volistad Campaign stands in stark contrast, in how a horrific administratum mishap started a planet-spanning war.

Orks have almost always been a nusiance on Volistad, with first encounters recorded as far back as the 33rd Millenium. Only in M41.837 however, did the Warboss Skroll appear, rallying the warring Orkish tribes into a great Waaugh against the defenses of Volistad. It's defenses overrun, the Planetary Govenor transmitted a distress message just as the planetary Astropathic Temple was overrun.

Dispatched from Ultima Segmentum Command, a warfleet was formed in late M41.840 to retake the vital world of Volistad. If the planet was not retaken, it would no doubt be a staging point to spread Warboss Skroll's waaugh throughout the sector. A leading figure in this effort was the notorious Commissar Holt, well famed for once personally executing an entire infantry company for cowardice.

The fleet departed, assuming a quick victory due to their overwhelming strength. Imperial Guard regiments from throughout the segmentum were formed to crush the assault utterly. What actually arrived at Volistad was but the Imperial Troopship 'Martyrs Eternus', and the Ultramarines Rapid Strike Vessel 'Litany of Striking Rapidly'. The rest of the fleet apparently having received orders last minute to redirect to the Armageddon Campaign. With these meager forces however, Commissar Holt took charge (apparently inventing some 'Lord Commander' figure to facilitate his command, as no such figure was ever confirmed) and demanded the invasion proceed as planned. Virtually the entire command staff was executed for charges of cowardice upon this proclamation. What follows is of course, history.

Periodically, I will be following the recovered journals, servo-skull recordings and vox logs of the soldiers who took part in the campaign to further understand the campaign, and to better know our hated enemy, the Ork.

ADDENDUM: Cogitator Vid-Recordings, Troopship 'Martyrs Eternus'

Commissar Holt scowled as he finished executing the last of the surviving Guard officers of Major rank or higher, reholstering his Laspistol as it's red-hot barrel cooled. He turned briskly, leaving the conference room with gritted teeth.

"How dare they say we should flee, merely because a few ships haven't arrived yet!" he grumbled, walking past the two sentries, both wide-eyed at the sound of apparent Laspistol shots within the conference room. Commissar Holt adjusted his cap down and muttered. "Clean up the mess." he ordered the nearest trooper, walking into the gothic-arched halls towards the ship's cathedral bridge.

Neither trooper needed much motivation, despite their expressions of revulsion at the sight of a half dozen bloody corpses within. They obeyed their orders, too terrified not to. Precisely how Commissar Holt liked it.

ADDENDUM: Reconstruction of the Battle of Zhukov Landing Zone

Commissar Holt, upon taking command requested an assault upon the province of Zhukov, the last territory that the orks had overrun. Captain Agrippa of the Ultramarines agreed to the invasion plan, and identified an ideal landing zone. His forces would depart from the Litany of Rapid Striking, and establish a beachhead.

Mustering his forces, he deployed one the following units:
1 Thunderhawk Gunship, 'Retribution of the Retributor', (Techmarine Faxmodem)
3 Predator Tanks (Brother Lethargius)
3 Whirlwind Artillery Vehicles (Brother Aggressius)
5 Space Marine Tactical Squads (Brother-Captain Agrippa)

The Objective: Take the bridge over the River Noxius, then secure the defensible location of Zhukov's Folly Chemical Works, and purge all Xenos. Let none escape the Imperium's Wrath.

Roaring down the cratered old road on the approach to the Chemical Works, Brother Lethargius's tank Column rolled up to secure the bridge. There were no signs of Xenos anywhere, as the aged Battle-Brother yawned in the cupola of his lead tank. The normally toxic fumes of the polluted green river seeming to have no effect on the Space Marine.

Techmarine Fax of Modem's Thunderhawk circled overhead of the Whirlwind battery, identifying numerous greenskin contacts in the distance. With targets spotted, the Thunderhawk swooped down to low altitude and opened up thrust, it's course set for the chemical works. Brother Aggressius finished reciting the Litany of Ordinance Airburst, praying to the machine spirits for a neat fragmentation spread as he let loose scores of rockets.

The rockets aim was true, as craters soon dotted the landscape, barrages of ten or twenty missiles exploding and shredding Ork limb from limb. They would continue to fire for the duration of the battle, with no shortage of targets caught helpless in the open.

While on approach, the Brother Faxmodem identified the disposition of several ork groups, and even one group digging frantically into the Plas-crete to avoid the rocket blasts butchering the nearby hills. It would seem that this was noticed, and a concentrated volley of Whirlwind Rockets rewarded this Ork mob for it's initiative.

Brother-Captain Agrippa observed the disposition of the Orks below as the Thunderhead made it's approach, blazing in at low altitude as crude Orkish small arms fire bounced harmlessly off it's armored hull. He identified the perfect landing spot, as he prepared his marines for combat by shouting a battle prayer at the top of his lungs. "BATTLE BROTHERS! TODAY, WE TAKE THIS RUSTED RUIN FROM THE HATED ALIEN! FOR THE EMPRAAAAH!"

The Thunderhawk lands right on top of a particularly beligierent Ork mob, and the Marines disembark, fanning out and firing their bolters in every direction. Even the Orks in the bunker are caught off guard completely surprised by the shock and awe of the attack. Agrippa drew his bolt pistol, and slew each ork with a shot to the head, as they stared out of the bunker at the sudden invaders.

And about now was when Brother Lethargius's Predator Column rolled up to the chemical works, having not fired a single shot. In fact, having not had even a single target in their sights. The entryway to the underground portion of the chemical works was secure.

Meanwhile, piles of Orks littered the plains of Zhukov, staining the grass red with the divine slaughter of these bestial xenos. Nearly all were blasted apart by endless hails of Whirlwind Fire. A pair of crude Warbikes rode off, fleeing the field as the Orks on foot moved off to regroup once the Whirlwinds paused to reload.

Having deposited his charge, Techmarine Faxmodem spots what surely was the local Ork Boss, based on its somewhat larger size and the presence of a particularly garish banner poke strapped to its back. Enacting the Holy Rite of Parley, He sends this Ork a gift from the Emperor.

Not satisfied with being so generous, Faxmodem chases down the poor Orks on foot, chewing them apart with repeated strafing runs and bombardment. Not a single Space Marine suffered so much as a scratch on their armor, although the Thunderhawk did lose two purity seals to small arms fire.

Commissar Holt wasted no time establishing a forward command post through the toxic fog of the chemical factory, executing two men that day allegedly, because 'the Imperium has no use for those who fear at the acrid scent of victory'. The Zhukov's Folly Chemical Works and Landing Zone were ours.

Jolly good show by our Astartes allies there, why we in the Guard probably won't even be needed in this campain other then some nice safe rearguard duties.

Following the capture of the Zhukov's Folly Landing Zone, troops of the 184th Mordian Iron Guard were the first to land, with their meager forces on the soil of Volistad. Due to the horrible mishap and Commissar Holt's insistance, retaking of the planet fell to the 184th Mordian Iron Guard.


Unforunately, Captain Agrippa's Ultramarines were required elsewhere in the Imperium. Taking his leave of Commissar Holt shortly after planetfall, the Litany of Indignation left system for a new crusade on nearby Lorn V. Some conjecture that the Astartes recognized the futility of capturing a planet with the Guard's current forces and departed, but I must remind us all that holding such sentiment is heresy of the most insidious kind.

The following units of the 184th Mordian were tasked to capture the Kotslev Planetary Spaceport.

Captain Forcelord of the Mordian 184th lead his infantry forces, consisting of five squads of light infantry, five squads of heavy weapons infantry, and five mortar teams. Attached to this company were six Chimera Armored Transports. The entire company was mechanized save the mortar crews.

Lieutenant Kendall's Bombard squadron was attached to the 184th, acting as mobile artillery support. Equipped with powerful siege mortars for urban combat, the squadron is ill-suited to the open spaceport field.

The political officer of the 184th was Commissar OmegaChief, a well decorated up and coming star of the Segmentum Commissariat. He was to ride into battle in his own Rhino command transport, enforcing the Emperor's will.

The Starport was a small landing zone, but large enough to allow heavier units to be landed. The two primary objectives were quite evident: To cleanse all enemies from the main landing pad, and to secure the flight control cogitator in the main Starport Terminus.

As a slight aside, the machine spirit that held power over this starport was reported to have a vicious temperament, often directing rebellious spacecraft to their doom, should the ship not submit to the cogitator's will. Our first attempts to take the landing field resulted in the crash landing of most of the regimental heavy air-mobile armor. Once the battle was over, the Regiment had much work to do if they were to salvage the heavy equipment.

Captain Forcelord lead the attack from the right flank, taking with him several heavy weapon squads aboard three Chimera transports. The mortar teams would support the advance on foot, rushing to firing positions.

Commissar OmegaChief personally commanded the Left flank force, with the light infantry component of the Company, as well as Lt. Kendall's Bombards on the nearby hilltop. He waved his chainsword viciously from the hatch of his command Rhino, shouting at the men to advance.

Upon sighting the smoke of the Imperium's armored fist approaching, A horde of Orks boiled out from the Terminus building. Our Bombard squadron was commanded to hold fire, for we could not risk damaging the cogitator banks within the structure.

Upon reaching the central landing pad, the Ork mobs and their warbikes entered engagement range of the Chimera transports. The Bombard squadron opened up on the Orks in the open, but their heavy siege shells were ill-suited to engaging scattered infantry and speedy Ork bikes. The 184th Mordian disembarked from their vehicles, and prepared to engage the enemy on foot.

A firefight broke out at long range, as both infantry lasgun fusilades and supporting fire from Chimera multilasers killed a handful of Orks. A stray Ork bolter shell however, seemed to hit the lead Chimera in it's vulnerable +++CENSORED BY ORDER OF INQUISITION+++ causing it to immolate it's whole crew in a horrific explosion. Over half of the squad that had just disembarked were killed by enemy fire and the explosion of their own vehicle behind them, sending scything fragments all over the battlefield.

Commissar OmegaChief hollared to rally the men, waving about his chainsword. His words were of duty to Emperor and Imperium. "Guardsmen! Waver not in the face of the enemy! You will do your duty!" he cries out.

The Ork Bike that had destroyed the Chimera rushed forward at blinding speed. "Rhino Crew! Flank speed ahead! I want to hit them with my sword!", Commissar OmegaChief shouted. The Rhino's engines roared to life, and the vehicle rushed forward, the Commissar's blade roaring and pointing. "GLORY FOR THE FIRST MAN TO DIE!"

The Bike roared up and crashed head-first into the Rhino, causing a giant fireball to consume both vehicles. Seeing the nearest other two vehicles explode within seconds of each other, Chimera 02's crew panicked and hit reverse gear immediately, intent on escaping further Orkish fire.

The survivng two members of the devastated Chimera's squad finished off another Ork Bike as it roared down on the Steadfast Chimera 03, firing their rocket launcher into the bike as it roared around the wreckage of their transport.

The remaining Imperial Forces continued their firefight, with periodic support fire from the thundering Bombards in the distance. Craters littered the battlefield, as the Orks began to break and run.

Captain Forcelord watched as heavy enemy fire forced two squads on the left flank to withdraw. However, his hand-picked command squad charged forward to take cover, and directed accurate heavy weapon fire to destroy the outgunned Orks.

The Ork survivors broke and ran, heading for the Terminus building.

With few enemies remaining on the field, Captain Forcelord rallied his forces, storming forward to secure the Starport Terminus. There was no time to stop and check for survivors within the burning wreck of the Commisarial Rhino. The Terminus Building was captured, and the landing control cogitator secured. The Company's Tech-Priests were dispatched immediately to soothe the no doubt tortured machine spirit, and nurse it back to health.

Victory to the Imperium!

Final Liberation is based on something like second edition Epic, and I can't remember what they were like there (it was all save modifiers in them days anyway), but in the current edition they're still on a 4 up save (no modifiers these days, just a straight save with a reroll if you have particularly meaty armour or no save if you were hit with a particularly meaty weapon).

So even in Epic the piddly wee marines are not so fragile.



Anyway, put me down for a tank driver, that the Xenos filth shall know the true power of the Imperial Guard.
