Why not more fundies?

Post by jaeger115 »

The media and newspapers doesn't seem to be noticing the growing fundie movement in America. Yet they report on every new trend, like powereating  and blue hair. And the media is supposed to be liberal! What went wrong here?

Religion is a sacred cow. You're not allowed to criticize it in America or you'll be instantly labelled a "bigot".

Wong unless you haven't noticed the majority of people on this forum are US cits along with a few brits cans the occaisional oz and perhaps some enzees. Freedom of religion in our constitution says: Gov. cannot have anything to do with religion, no bashing no supporting.
It also has a freedom of speech thing: Say what you want, but don't lie.
So calling fundies bigotted assholes with no logic faculties limited intelligence and the inability to understand simple things to keep their own ideas and prejudices intact, is protected speech. However, calling gays an affront to god is neither logical nor true. How can one be offending something that does not exist? Therefore they are being slanderous and demeaning and thus unconstitutional.
Let's stone'em.

You must be blind, then. Something like a dozen states have laws expressly designed to curtail and dilute the teaching of evolution theory.

I'm moving to Canada when I graduate from school, if I can find a good public college in Toronto.

I haven't noticed this fundie movement at all, either. Ohio is a balanced place. Now I know some fundies (alas, I live with one) and near-fundies but they don't seem to be organized into any "movenment."

Check your state education laws. IIRC, Ohio recently passed laws designed to curtail the teaching of evolution theory because of pressure from this nonexistent fundie movement.

Bullshit. The majority of people in Ohio wanted that intelligent design bullshit taught in public schools. I had a lengthy E-mail exchange with the Ohio Board of Education, desperately trying to get them to understand why intelligent design was a pure pseudoscience. In the end, they decided to let individual districts decide, which was a pussified withdrawal from the situation because they were too cowardly to take a stand after having a physics major explain to them the the situation was clearly black and white. The one person who replied to me in favor of intelligent design presented appeals to popularity, saying that 70% of Ohio voters wanted that shit taught in schools.

They're not fundies, but they are scientifically ignorant morons.

Odd I've never heard that, and I usually do about things like that. I'm not trying to say you're wrong at all, I'm serious. I don't know why. I've been out of school for only a couple years but back then evolution was taught or at least regarded as a sound theory by most everyone. NO ONE in my school was stupid enough to be a YEC.

IIRC: My science teachers never really got into it, in the effect we never had a test soley on the subject, but once a student questioned our ape ancestry, and evolution was defended.

I never really paid much attention in school, but I know we were not taught Creation theory. I'll ask some of my in-school friends about it.

So individual districts were given the freedom to force their teachers to teach religious bullshit in science class if they want to?

Close enough.

I didn't say anything about young-Earth creationism. I said intelligent design, which is almost worse. At least creationism makes some testable predictions. Intelligent design is simply useless redundancy. It's also, in my opinion, a political compromise for fucking pussies who are either too stupid to know what's right or too fucking scared to take a side on the issue. Intelligent design is just creationism in a clown suit. Virtually the entire scientific community recognizes it as such.

And the woman who E-mailed me back used some quotes to support the case for intelligent design in addition to irrelevant polls. She quoted a snippet of a scientist and took it completely out of context to make it seem as if he supported intelligent design. When I actually did a bit of research on the guy, I found out that he was adamantly against teaching intelligent design in schools. That's right. Sitting on your state's board of education is a fucking moron who couldn't form an intelligent argument to save her life, a woman who got lambasted by a 19 year-old university student. This is not the kind of person who should be making educational decisions about your state. I'd recommend looking into trying to get her incompetent ass removed. I've got names, if you'd like.

Hell, other board members E-mailed me congratulating me on completely destroying her obvious pad response to my initial E-mail, saying that no one had yet picked up the gauntlet and smacked her across her fucking head with it. And I live in fucking Illinois, for god's sakes. Was there a single person in Ohio as motivated to stop this as I was? Apparently not.
Are you sure his claim was compeletely true? I'm not trying to say you're wrong either, by all means. I know only one person who believes in YEC, and I live with him. So...I'm proud to say that my little village is near fundie-free.
Yes, I'm sure. I even E-mailed them to tell them that it was a cowardly dodge after I read about it (not quite in those words, mind you :) ).
Darth Wong wrote:So individual districts were given the freedom to force their teachers to teach religious bullshit in science class if they want to?

Precisely. This is more of the "big government" paranoia that crops up every time the government wants to do something that affects all states and districts equally.

If you've got any friends who like to cause trouble (like me), just have them start smacking intelligent design down the minute the teacher starts covering it, if they're in one of the districts that decided it'd be a good idea to teach that bullshit.

Just have them ask, "What predictions does intelligent design make? I want to test it in next week's lab, like every other scientific theory."

Oh, I've got friends that like to get into trouble alright, but none of them are involved enough in politics (i.e. voting or giving a damn) to do anything like that. More along the lines of petty vandalism and doing naughty things.

Making the teacher look like an ass for teaching that tripe should be a drool-worthy prospect for them, especially if they know that there's no way the teacher can tell them they're wrong and still call himself a competent science teacher.

It's that way just about anywhere. If the board/principal are threatining to can someone over the subject they usually will go along with the board.

Doesn't everyone love the tyranny of the majority?

This, my friends, is why pure democracy cannot work properly. Because people are stupid, and you need to limit their power, whether they be the stereotypical welfare-sucking urbanites or the Bible-thumping rural religious fanatics.

There is a reason why US Senators were originally elected by State governments and NOT by popular vote.

American Conservatism is about the exercise of personal responsibility without state interference in the lives of the citizenry..... unless, of course, it involves using the bludgeon of state power to suppress things Conservatives do not like.
