I don't like this cartoon from the usually good M.Wueker:

It may be me, but this cartoon seems to feed the anti-nuclear power knee jerking that's been happening the world over lately.

Wow, it's been a year since anybody saw a TERRIBLE POLITICAL CARTOON?

Anyway, I say this and immediately thought of this thread:

It is a take on a new show called GCB, Good Christian Bitches. I think it was also a book.

That is literally one of the most horrific, insulting cartoons I have ever seen.

As long as this is on the first page, I ran into this today:

Image

Now, that's bad enough, but it gets better. I saw this because a friend of mine (I don't dig his politics; we just hit each other with swords every now and then) "liked" it on Facebook. Seeing that commenting was open on the group it was from, I commented that it seemed backwards, because the insurance mandate is forcing everyone to buy (and consequently pay for) health insurance whether they currently "need" it or not. The guy who posted it shot back with, and I quote:
No... the purpose of the mandate is to force insurance companies to go out of business. That would lead to single payer. And the problem with single payer is it becomes a monopoly. Without competitiveness we are all slaves.
Which is... I have to wonder how anyone in anything resembling a sane state of mind could, with a straight face, make the assertion that a law forcing people to pay insurance companies money will have the effect of forcing insurance companies into bankruptcy and out of business. It's the most pants-on-head retarded thing I've heard all year, and this year has not been below average in the pants-on-head retarded department.

And then, having posted while my comment was still there to make sure I got a notification, he deleted my comment and blocked me so I couldn't point this out. Ah well, probably not worth my time anyway.

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

False analogy much? If your car becomes unusable for whatever reason and you could not afford to repair or replace it, chances are pretty damn good that you're not going to either die horribly or wish you were dead. Your body, on the other hand, won't wait for service, and if something is seriously wrong with it you need treatment NOW or you will die with varying amounts of suffering.

And yeah, if your "friend" isn't terminally retarded then he is an obvious and very poor troll.

I actually posted that in the cartoon thread, weirdly enough. And it's saying that Pakistan is more or less surrendering to the Taliban. Argubably this might not be the case given the fighting by the Pakistani army in the pro-Taliban tribal areas and elsewhere, but widespread support for the insurgents (both the Afghan and Pakistani branches and their affiliates) throughout the country, including collaboration with them via the Pakistani Army (which if I'm not mistaken sent in troops and supplies to the Taliban during their conquest of 90% of Afghanistan) and up to today, in which pro-Taliban forces in the military assist the insurgent groups currently fighting the NATO-backed Kabul narcoregime helps to futher this image of a Pakistan that has largely given up in dealing with them. How often is it that we hear of the latest complaints in Western newspapers or in government circles of Pakistan's regime and/or the ISI refusing to do much in combating the Islamist rebels there?

That is a very terrible cartoon, simplifying the situation to the extreme and neglecting to mention the massive losses in both lives and economy Pakistan has faced due to the GWOT.

The only part in this he had was liking the cartoon, thus bringing my attention to it. He didn't post it, and the interaction wasn't with him.

Pakistan has sacrificed and continues to sacrifice way more than America does in the war on terror, but sure, let's not count that as usual right block?

Yeah, let's not mention all the Pakistani civilians that die whenever the US decide to shoot a a handful of missiles into a crowd because one of them might be a terror supporter according to some classified super-secret evidence. Who cares about dead brown people anyway, right?

And a whole lot more.
Ten years ago, Pakistan was not exactly a just and developed society, but since then it has been dragged through hell by inept generals and corrupt politicians who seem to keep picking the wrong side of an argument. More than 40,000 of their countrymen, including at least 3,000 of their soldiers, have been killed in a war that has literally lit their cities on fire. Nearly 3 million have fled the conflict, becoming refugees in their own country. With every bombing of a mosque, every gun battle, every video of their young men being beheaded like sheep, they ask themselves how things became so bad. No doubt, there are religious extremists in that region exploiting the situation, but Pakistanis know that is not the end of the story. Many attacks against Pakistanis are in direct retaliation for anti-Taliban military activity, including drone attacks.
[...]
Meanwhile, the American machine publicly repeats tired cliches of mutual cooperation with Pakistan, but brazenly kills its supposed ally’s soldiers at border posts, and its young men in Lahore’s bazaars. America ships a third of the supplies for its occupation in Afghanistan through Pakistan, in thousands of trucks driven by poor men who become the victims of routine bombings and kidnappings, over highways that have suffered some $1.3 billion worth of damage. U.S. forces use Pakistani air bases for refueling and rely on Pakistani intelligence for their operations, but Congress and the State Department refuse to pay hundreds of millions in bills. Pakistani officials estimate the “war on terror” has cost the country some $67.9 billion in economic setbacks and infrastructural damage. Despite austerity-linked IMF loans and the carrot of U.S. aid, economic problems in Pakistan persist, largely a result of instability since the Afghan war.

Yeah. Of course westerners can go all high and mighty about "dem turrorists" over there but if their country is facing utter ruin due to that maybe they would think about walking a fine line too.

Strawman? You're the one who expressed incredulous hilarity at the thought that Pakistan might have sacrificed a lot to the incredibly ill-conceived western War on Terror, aren't you? Maybe you should learn what exactly constitutes a strawman before you accuse others of erecting them.
