An in situ tour of the ATV

Post by Skgoa »

Here it is:

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

Damn, that place is cramped.

I meant the station itself. The ATV, yeah, it's kind of comfy compared to the innards of the ISS.

Then again, it pretty much serves as a storage room while docked :)

With ISS the problem is the sheer amount of garbage that has been accumulating. There's only so many places to store it. It's one of the huge headaches expected when the Shuttle retires. For example:

In the video he passes through the area that actually serves as the galley for ISS...it's actually not that bad space wise, as evidenced by this picture of dinner while a shuttle crew was being hosted (though being able to seat guests on the ceiling helps I guess) - http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/ima ... 007461.jpg

I still find it amazing though how spacious Skylab was compared to every space station that has followed since.

The ATV (the very thing this thread is about) is going to be used for that.

I.E. by cramming all the junks inside it at the end of its mission, and launching the thing to burn into the atmosphere.

Mission accomplished.

Along with Russian Progress capsules and Japanese HTV's.

None of which have the same down-mass capability as the Shuttle.
