For one, Space Marines are hilariously cut down by the dozens from even gretchin or lasgun fire. This is because for some reason, Lasguns and similar small arms are rated at 'Penetration 40', which tends to mean they will deal damage to targets between 30 to 50 armor usually. Space Marines have 20 armor. Guardsmen have 10 armor. Yes, so if Guardsmen are armored with wet tissue paper, the mighty Spess Mahreens are armored with wet tissue paper, periodically dotted with wax purity seals. Oh. And Guardsmen outgunned the marines too, since none of the Marines remembered to pack a rocket launcher.
Frankly, I love the way Hoth freaking ended his speech with the Ultramarines.
Go away and play now, the Guard will take over the conquest.

This odyssey, this, exodus. Do we journey toward the promised land, or into the valley of the kings? Three decades ago I envisioned a new future for our species, and now that we are on the brink of realizing my dream, I feel only solitude, and regret. Has my entire life's work been a fool's crusade? Have I led my people into this desert, only to die?

In a dark chamber aboard the Martyrs Eternus...
The shadowy form of the Master Chirurgon leant over a table, attended to by his retinue of spider-armed Medicae servitors, each bristling with appendages of injectors and blades. They leaned over a shadowy form on the table in the dim light, ritual incense filling the air.
"Lord Commissar... can you hear me?" croaked the ancient adept's voice.
A slow, weak response behind a respirator filter returned. "Yes... Master Chirurgon." The voice continued, hissing slowly as the servitors tended to the form, draped in Imperial Black. "Where is my Rhino? Is she safe? Is she alright?
The Master Chirurgon's form hunched forward, his withered hand slowly gesturing as he spoke with a low, seemingly regretful tone, "...it seems.. in your righteous fury... you hit her with your sword."
Another hiss answered, mechanical noise with rising emotion in the voice mixed with a metallic tinge, "I... I couldn't. She was alive! I felt it!"

+++ The Battle for Malenkov Village +++
Following the securing of Kotslev Starport, the campaign's strategic objectives became clearer cut. With the region of farmland to the north, and town of Stavok due east, both had to be secured before Commissar Holt could take the valuable Gorshkov Hive, once the shining jewel of planet Volistad. However, Malenkov Village had to be taken before the Starport could be put into service landing fresh troops.
Captain Forcelord of the first Company, 184th Mordian Iron Guard would lead the attack. Commissar OmegaChief's new augmetic... body... would still take some time for him to get used to. Captain Forcelord deployed his troops as so on the approach up the main road to the strategically vital Malenkov village. Lt. Kendall's Bombard Squadron unfortunately bogged down in an old farm plot, and was unable to reposition. To cover them, the mortar platoon was split into two elements to provide defensive fire on both north and south approaches. The infantry mounted their 5 remaining transports and prepared to take the town.
The first objective for the company was to secure the road into town from the starport. Plans were already drawn up to make Malenkov an important supply depot and rallying point for the eventual assault on the Gorshkov hive.
The Orks were likely preparing an ambush at the other end of the village. What little was left of the ruined structures was expendable, and Servo-Skull flyby suggested that these 'Blood Axe' Orks may have prepared ambush positions within the ruins. Lt. Kendall's bombard squadron would be well suited to stop them.
Of great concern also was the first appearance of Ork Armour. These strange tractor-like xeno vehicles were spotted as the assault on the village began. The Bombard battery opened fire, but was unable to secure a hit on the speedy vehicles.
The Mortar Crews finally had a chance to exercise their crews. Sightings of Orks in the city by recon elements gave them ample opportunity to shell Orkish positions, killing a few with stray shrapnel.
First Company rolled into the city square, taking only light small arms fire from a handful of scattered Orks. Their Chimeras rattled with bolts bouncing off harmlessly, much to the nervousness of all aboard. It was well known that Chimeras possessed a temperamental and even spiteful machine spirit, that often would violently combust at the slightest insult.
Additional Ork vehicles of the same type were spotted by scouts near the south. A second squadron of these crude speedsters roared for the city. Their turrets seemed to hiss, prometheum tanks clearly hooked into a crude flame throwing weapon.
Although short-ranged, the Orkish predilection for speed would make them deadly to even dispersed infantry troops.
As First company continued to take fire, Captain Forcelord voxed in a fire mission for Kendall's guns, spotting a building containing several orks. The battery more than obliged, firing a heavy siege shell at the structure.
In a massive explosion, the foundation gave way, levelling the structure and slaying every last greenskin within. Such was the power of our mighty imperial artillery!
Following the artillery attack, the Chimeras rolled into the square, multilasers blazing away to cover the disembarking infantry. Lasgun fire lit up the square, as suppressed Orks were cut to ribbons by the fire, their whole defensive arrangement laid to waste due to the well placed artillery shells.
A single 'Bowel Burna' vehicle roared down the main street, burning at full speed for the tightly packed troopers on the village square. With it's powerful flame thrower weapon, this armored vehicle could well spell the doom of the entire company.
But of course, the Emperor protects! Massed rocket fire managed to eventually detonate the crude Ork prometheum tanks, burning the xenos in a conflagration.
Not taking any chances with these flame-tanks, Captain Forcelord commanded his troops to scatter for cover, and for the Chimeras to move south and block the large group of enemy vehicles from breaking the lines.
Now that Imperial Forces controlled the town square, the Xenos were caught in the open. Although their armor was able to withstand much of the las and rocket fire, soon the southern force was little more than a pile of burning wrecks. The Xenos even attempted to charge the artillery formation, but heavy mortar fire on the approach struck another fortuitous weak point in the crude vehicles, destroying two flankers.
But despite the victory in the making, Imperial Blood was shed this day. Captain Forcelord's command squad suddenly took enemy fire, with an Ork Ambush at the next strategic point! Two of his men were cut down instantly, including the Vox Operator and Medic.
"Advance, guardsmen!"
Despite the enemy fire, Captain Forcelord's remaining troops advanced and two more were slain by Orkish shells. Only the Captain remained, having lost his XO and bodyguard.
"No! You'll pay for that, Aliens!"
Drawing his laspistol, the Captain placed a shot between the eyes of the largest Ork in the mob. His boyz, watching the rolling Chimeras and imperial Infantry approaching, fell into a rout.
The day was the Imperium's once more.
---
In the aftermath of the battle, despite the loss of Captain Forcelord's command team, Commissar Holt landed troops from the 81st Tallarn Armored Batallion. The soldiers under the command of Captain Hawkwings included a mechanized platoon of soldiers, backed by heavier equipment.
Lead by Sgt. Karrick, a squadron of Leman Russ Battle Tanks made up the spearhead of the formation. These mighty vehicles were the mainstay of the Imperial Guard, and superior to any known Orkish tank.
Supporting them was Sgt. Barnest's Basilisk squadron. Faster and somewhat less destructive than the Bombard Siege Vehicles, the Basilisk provided more accurate fire support, far more suited to open field engagements against armor.
With the Tallarn 81st now on planet, the Liberation force had to press their advantage while the enemy was still off guard.

Re: Foul Xenos! (Let's play WH40K: Final Liberation)
As an aside, the Emperor was really with me THAT battle. Those 'Thudd Guns' (IE, Mortars) are pretty much garbage, that got a few lucky hits in. One also managed to somehow take out the Bowel Burna that was rolling up to torch the entire artillery detachment.
Likewise, Lasgun fire from the Chimeras somehow managed to destroy a few of those, which really should not happen given the relative armor values.
Anyway, the next battle will take place with the Second Battalion, which has now become available. It's currently only consisting of a command platoon, 3 Chimeras, 3 Leman Russ tanks and a Basilisk. We're steadily accruing resources, so pretty soon we'll be able to purchase what people think the campaign needs, from Space Marines to Rough Riders to Marauder Bombers.

More dakka for the Emprah! We can crush the foul orkoids with our treads after judiciously gunning them down at a safe distance. The treads are easier to clean that way, don'cha know.
How does the game handle reinforcing damaged squads? Do you have to expend resources to bring them back to full strength in between missions or do they automatically replenish?

You can get them turning up if you play a random battle and the computer picks them, but there no way to buy them in the campaign or select them in the custom battle setup by default.
