What good is a phaser, if Vader would deflect it with bare hands?
And... can anyone give a watt-count for Force lightning?

Well, as for the first item, I can't really see if that's a question or not.
Vader would not be able to block a phaser beam with his bare hand (or rather, gloved hand). It would burn his glove and injure him, and on the highest settings vapourise him.
Using the Force, however, Vader would be able to absorb the beam and deflect it.

"And besides, who cares if a monster destroys Australia?"
I think thats what he meant by bare hands, using only the force to deflect it
Gotta make the distinctions though ya?
How many watts does it take to shock someone to the ground and injure them signicantly, an injury comparable to Dooku did to Obi or Palpatine did to Luke?

it settles that case, still though, how much power is it? it has to be measurable somehow ya?

Well I think that Luke's cloth are making smoke, and even if some sort of unknown energy is used in the lightning, there is a countable amount of normal thermal energy.
Am I right?

It probably imparts thermal energey as well, Force Lightning IRC is nearly as odd as Phaser NDF

Have we ever seen Vader block anything but Solo's shot? I'm not saying that its not possible, but I think its a bit hasty to wave your hand and just say that Vader would deflect it.
In T@B Luke also suffered residule effect from the barrage he got at the hands of Palpy. For the next few days his bones where losing calcium or some shit that was gonna paralise him for life if he kept going as normal.
Spanky The Dolphin wrote:No, watts would be the correct term, as Force Lighting is basically a continuous "beam".
I know I know the difference, but I always get mixed up....
its easy just think Joules is energy
Watts is Joules/Second is a energy rate

Actually, Vader doesn't even need to use the force. Remember that phasers are practically useless against metal and guess what Vader's hand is made out of.

I could be wrong, but I've never seen a reasonable display of hand phasers damaging metal. That's why all those conviently placed crates in most Trek are good cover, because they absorb the beam.
But I don't think Vaders hand would be quite thick enough to absorb the blast anyways.
Vader's metallic hand has nothing to do with the ability to deflect shots, IMHO. Luke's hand did not deflect the blast at Jabba's. So Vader did it with the Force. He took no damage whatsoever.
And, while phasers are no good against metal (thanks for pointing that out!), blasters ARE good In AHN novel, which is canon, blaster shots make pieces of melted metal fly over Luke and Leia's heads.

Well it's hardly a large leap in logic, consider:
1) A phaser beam has been described as particle beam(nadions), a blaster is a particle beam of sorts
2) Both distinctly travel at sub c velocites, at shorter ranges phasers are a bit faster
So there's not that much of a difference here.

No need for the novel. In the movie we see a great many fist sized chunks blown out of the Death Star walls. Not to mention equipment being destroyed and one Stormtrooper killed by a hit on the wall behind his neck.
