GOP & Food Stamps

Can it get any worse? A new bill would ban food stamp eligibility to families of striking workers
By Andrew Leonard

At what point does outright class warfare start to backfire for the Republican Party? The latest news out of Washington, courtesy of Zaid Jilani at ThinkProgress, is simply stunning in its audacious cruelty: a provision in a bill introduced by five House Republicans that would deny food stamps to any family in which a member of that family is on strike.
(3) STRIKING WORKERS INELIGIBLE- Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no member of a family unit shall participate in the food stamp program at any time that any able-bodied work eligible adult member of such household is on strike as defined in the Labor Management Relations Act, 1947 (29 U.S.C. 142(2)), because of a labor dispute (other than a lockout) as defined in section 2(9) of the National Labor Relations Act (29 U.S.C. 152(9)):
House Republicans already slapped the swelling numbers of Americans who are poor and hungry in the face by suggesting earlier this week that cutting funds for the food stamp program is a higher priority than cutting subsidies for farmers. And in Maine, the new Republican governor made news on Wednesday by ordering the removal of a mural celebrating important moments in Maine's labor history from the Department of Labor. And, of course, the dual push against collective bargaining rights for public sector employees and for "right-to-work" laws has been well publicized.

But denying eligibility to the food stamp program because an American citizen went on strike? If the Republican goal is the outright radicalization of millions of Americans they're certainly going about it the right way.
Just more attempts at stifling any means of protesting labor conditions, whether you're unionized or not.

It's also part of they "family values" package of punishing an entire family for the actions of one member.... while among corporations not only individuals but entire companies are shielded from the consequences of their actions.

I'm hoping some of the middle-class and lower idiots who kneejerk vote republican and put the Tea Party idiots into office come to their senses. Soon. Too many in government are demonizing and dehumanizing the poor, unemployed, and left-of-center and then scapegoating them for all the country's ills. I don't like where this is leading.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. How many of the Tea Party are actually themselves poor? I remember reading about some members who became active in the Tea party after they were laid off. I also recall Joe the Plumber who wasn't quite as rich as he claimed. Are these a case of poor people trying to keep poorer people down because they believe the ideology.

No, more like the "I might become rich one day, so I should do everything in my power to make sure that the rich get everything."

The thing is, Food Stamps already have worse rules, this rule at least follows some sort of consistent rational (Those who are able to work and have a job but are specifically choosing not to due to striking shouldn't benefit from Government money). I mean it's wrong mostly due to the fact that it's worded that ANY family member and punishing the group as a whole. But there are more ridiculous rules, like the fact that you if you don't have a family, you gotta work 20 hours to even qualify in the first place. (No work and can only find work 15 hours a week at 8 dollars? Shit outta luck)

Though to be honest, I can't see this getting far in certain states, in a lot of states your case manager for Food Stamps has ALOT of leeway in approving benefits.

Incorrect, Alphawolf (I speak from experience).

It is either work 20 hours a week, or look for work 20 hours a week, and that applies to all able-bodied adults.

There are exceptions for the disabled, and those caring for the disabled.

The work rules, at least in some areas, have been suspended due to the high unemployment rate as well. Where there are simply no jobs they've (temporarily) dropped the requirement.

I don't feel it's unreasonable to ask able-bodied adults to at least look for work, even if I have some dislike of the way the requirement is enforced.

And I most certainly do have an issue for punishing an entire family for the actions of one member.

That's strange, when I applied for them in NYC, the lady told me I didn't qualify because I didn't meet the 20 hour threshold and they only gave them to me when I was able to increase my hours for the two paycheck periods. (Granted, I got a different person the second time so it could have been the first person just didn't like me for whatever reason). My mistake.

The question I would ask though, if the law took out the "any member of the household" clause would it be more justified? Like should single member individuals be allowed to apply for Food Stamps while on strike? I mean being on strike could be considered having a job and actively choosing not to partake in it, and should that be considered moot since strikes are mostly group oriented and if a strike is going on even if an individual wants to work he probably cant?

Should the law differentiate between those who were on them before the strike and those who are applying now while striking? Since any individual who needed them while working, will surely need them while striking and even after the strike ends? (Unless they're striking for higher pay)

The BIG problem is that if someone is already on foodstamps, and goes on strike, they are to be denied eligibility. So, if you have such a shitty job that food stamps are required, and you try to improve your conditions (thus perhaps getting yourself and your co-workers off foodstamps) the government will now help your employer starve you out.

Might as well go back to the days when the army would shoot striking workers.

Right, either take it up the ass and shut up or get totally fucked. Love the message.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Its not my message, its just the way it is. Believe me, I've worked plenty of jobs for shitty pay in shitty conditions, where my co-workers and I wished we could strike, but doing so would have just gotten the lot of us fired. Factory work where all of the machines have had their safeties removed so the lines could run faster? Check. Coal industry work for sixteen and eightteen hour shifts for $5.50 an hour with no breaks? Done it. Hell, one of my better jobs still had me working in a concrete block building in the wintertime with no heat. These jobs all had three things in common: 1) they were non-union. 2) any workers that tried to strike or organize would simply be fired and replaced. And 3) they made me ineligible for food stamps (or any government assistance at all), by reason of making too much money.

Any particular reason why you didn't call OSHA (you can do so anonymously, you know) and get the place inspected?

It didn't seem so bad, at first. I had to be there a while before I realized just how bad it was, but that's what happened at that place, actually. I'd been there about eight months and OSHA came in and shut the place down, which was a good thing, but the factory never opened back up, which was bad, for obvious reasons.

Ah, so its like the Australians who whine about a flood tax, even though most of it is charged to high income earners like myself. Ironically having no flood tax would benefit me more (from a strictly selfish, and financial point of view), but I fully support a tax to replace damaged infrastructure from a natural disaster.
