Help needed with Win2000

Post by MKSheppard »

Which services can I remove from my computer without affecting anything?

How do I speed up "saving your profile" when you log out?

(my brother's profile saves in 3 seconds, while mine (which is admin) takes 2 minutes to save)

Copy paste what you have running now and I'll let you know

Do you have a network with other computers?

If so do you share stuff betveen them? (Printers, Files, whatever)

Also how do you connect to the internet? Phone, adsl, cable or something else?

No network at home. I connect to the internet through a cable modem
connected thru my 10/100 Ethernet port

Turn off Automatic Updates, Sucks up bandwidth and you'll know to do it yourself every so often
Turn off the Print Spooler if you don't have a printer
Turn off all the Remote Access ones(Unless you do that)
Turn off Still Image Service
Turn off Telephony(Unless you use 56k)
And turn off the Tiny Personal Firewall(Next to useless)

I usually don't bother with messing around with the services.

You should, its a good 1%-8% Preformance increase depending on what fat you can cut out of Windows

Defrag your disk if you haven't done it lately. Windows can take ages to save user profiles if the various profile data files are badly fragmented.
It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

For me it's really not worth it to get such a small boost; I've done it before and I really didn't notice it. Hell, I kept the XP Theming Service open this time.

I dont notice itty bitty boots either. Especially since my needs are pretty low.

One thing I do is try to keep my profile as small as possible. I store everything on another partition. Not sure if it really helps performance, but you know what they say! If you think it does, then it must work. :P
