I'm packing a Heavy Bolter right now, and I seem to be doing quote well with it. Wouldn't mind moving up to a plasma cannon in the Devastator squad. Or an Assault Cannon when I make Terminator. Sweet!
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."

Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Re: Let's Play: Chaos Gate
The Heavy Bolter stays useful for the whole game. It's fast-firing once you open up past the first shot, yet able to crack open chaos marines effectively. Plasma Cannons have the supreme drawback of a turn to fully recharge, which makes generally a missile launcher packing plasma or melta rockets better alas.Eternal_Freedom wrote:I'm packing a Heavy Bolter right now, and I seem to be doing quote well with it. The assault cannon however, is downright broken good.

That era of 40k on the tabletop also allowed for terminators with lightning claws, assault cannon, cyclone missiles and storm shield all on the one model. Not to mention them having a 3+ on 2d6 armour save.

MISSION START
The two squads of Ultramarines deployed by Thunderhawk, rushing to the aid of a mining colony that had fallen under attack by Chaos forces. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived it appeared that the loyal Imperial servants were dead, and the facility was firmly under the control of the Word Bearers and their ilk. There could only be one response: CLEANSE, PURGE, KILL!
Immediately upon deployment, Brother Malus, newly assigned to Tactical Squad 1, spotted two Word Bearers, one at close range.
Darman Malus - "Foul Chaos Marine in sight!"
Brother Docken, now equipped with the heavy bolter for their squad, opened fire and quickly cut down the Word Bearer.
Charred Docken - "Ahh, so this is how Brother Kursk got ridiculous amounts of XP so fast!"
Tactical squad 1 advanced northwest, along the rim of the crater which the mining colony rested in. Combined bolter fire from the rest of Squad 1 cut down several cultists and another Chaos marine. Sergeant Andronicus skilfully weakened the traitor marines with his gunfire and grenades, allowing Brother Gaius to finish them off with a single shot each.
Caveat Emptor Andronicus - "It's called kill stealing actually."
Brother Darman Malus, being the newest member of the squad, was sent forward as bait to scout out enemy positions. As he crested a hill, he spotted in the distance a Word Bearer with a missile launcher.
The Word Bearer opened fire, hitting Brother Malus with a frag missile. Brother Paulus Scarabeus bravely ran back to the Thunderhawk to retrieve the missile launcher, while the rest of squad 1 dug in.
Malus - "Emperor's golden turds! That hurt and I'm down to my last medkit!"
More Chaos Marines appeared, including one who skillfully hid behind a rock while shooting. The Devastator squad moved up to assist, led by Sergeant Morantor, and with Veteran Dimitri Kursk AKA "The Kurskinator" wielding his heavy bolter. Brother Narkus followed close by, hoping to learn from the decorated veteran.
Narkus - "So it's pointed this way, right?"
Despite the hail of automatic fire from the twin heavy bolters, the Word Bearer was protected by his stony ally and stubbornly remained alive. The honor of the kill fell to Sergeant Andronicus, whose freakishly accurate bolter shot finally dropped the traitor marine.
Andronicus - "Yes... I can feel it... my ways of horrid aim and bad luck are... changing!"
Brother Malus dashed forward, intent on closing range with the missile launcher-equipped Word Bearer. Unfortunately, he walked right into another frag missile, fired by the freakishly accurate Chaos marine. By this time however, Brother Scarabeus had returned with the spare missile launcher, and nailed the Word Bearer at long range with a krak missile.
Scarabeus - "The spirit of Brother Zaitsev lives on!"
Unfortunately that did not seem to be the case, as the now-legendary Brother Zaitsev actually killed what he hit. Brother Scarabeus' krak missile did nothing to the Word Bearer, who calmly stood and took aim, hitting Brother Malus with yet another frag missile.
Brother Malus, heavily wounded but not yet dead, stumbled upon another Chaos marine and his cultist ally. This would end slightly better for him however, as Malus' mighty taunts shook the Chaos Marine. His aim faltered, the Word Bearer shot his cultist ally in the back, spooshing him into a pile of goo.
Malus - "Hey, so I had a pretty good time last night... with YOUR MOTHER! IN BED!"
Word Bearer - "wtf i don't even-"
Fortunately, support came before the Word Bearer could recover his wits, and the traitor quickly ate several krak grenades.
Meanwhile, Brother Scarabeus took careful aim and fired again, this time breaching the armor of the missile launcher-equipped Word Bearer and finally ending the threat to Brother Malus' wellbeing.
Tactical Squad 1 was now advancing towards the end of the mining colony, having cleared out most of the enemies on their side.
The Devastator squad advanced through the complex and northeast, hoping to flush out any enemies in hiding, and trusting in the deadliness of their two heavy bolter-equipped marines. Tactical Squad 1 was thorough though, and there were no more hostiles encountered outside.
The two squads converged on the tunnel at the far end of the facility, clearing away a few gelatinous cultists who had wandered their way.
Leaving behind a small rearguard, the still-untested Devastator squad led the way into the tunnels, with Brother Slab Hardbeef on point.
Slab Hardbeef - "Bros, it's real dark in here... and not like sweet bro-cave dark either... Whoa! Evil Chaos bros, bros! Lots of 'em! And their little jelly-bros too!"
Brothers Kursk and Narkus, with their heavy weapons, opened fire and slaughtered the cultists, several Word Bearers, and most of the mining equipment.
Brother Hardbeef, intent on closing to melee range, charged the remaining heretics, followed by Sergeant Andronicus.
Slab Hardbeef - "Back me up bro! I'm gonna try this sweet move I learned from Halo!"
Fortunately for everyone, the final enemies were cut down by gunfire and immolated before Brother Hardbeef could "teabag the shit out of 'em". He and Sergeant Andronicus advanced to the last room, finding several crates of weapons and munitions.
Slab Hardbeef - "Broski! This crate has got brawesome-looking gear!"
Andronicus - "Right... you get to carry them back."
Slab Hardbeef - "I'd be honored bro! Just like last week huh, one keg on each shoulder! Alright, let me just remove these bicep guards so everyone can see what all that gym time and Muscle Milk did for me!"
MISSION END

So what if I steal your kills? That's what you get for choosing puny normal bolters and melee weapons over a big fucking heavy bolter.
Terminator Honours? What does that get me in this game?

After the previous mission, some reorganization of the squads took place. Brother Paulus Scarabeus was moved to the Devastator squad and given a missile launcher as his weapon. Brother Lalkurti Vanas was moved to Tactical Squad 1 to take his place.
Before moving on to Kaurava IV, the Ultramarines conducted several skirmishes on nearby planets where Chaos forces were found.
The first was a sweep of some ruins where Chaos cultists were doing something. Keen to the threat, Tactical Squad 1 and the Devastators deployed to wipe out the cultists and stop whatever it was they were doing.
The mission itself was a fairly standard sweep and destroy in a wooded area near several old ruined buildings.
Taking up positions near the low walls, the Ultramarines simply waited for the enemy to come screaming and gibbering towards them. Brother Charred Docken distinguished himself during this mission, showing considerable accuracy with the heavy bolter. In addition, sergeant Andronicus recorded his first one-shot kill of a Chaos cultist. Truly a momentous occasion.
Brother Darman Malus was promoted to veteran, and Brother Charred Docken was awarded Terminator Honours.
Killboard (all cultists):
SGT Andronicus: 2
Gaius: 4, with 100% accuracy.
Charred Docken: 7
Lalkurti Vanas: 1
Darman Malus: 2
SGT Morantor: 1
Slab Hardbeef: 1
Paulus Scarabeus: 1
Dimitri Kursk: 1
Narkus: 0
-----
The second mission was in an industrial district of Planet [REDACTED], where Chaos cultists had killed the loyal Imperial workers and were now profaning the machines in their foul worship. The same personnel were deployed on-planet to wipe out the cultists.
The two squads infiltrated a generatorium, where they prepared for battle.
The facility was a maze of girders, barrels, and buildings, rendering long-range bolter fire nearly impossible.
Accordingly, the squads set up in overwatch positions and again waited for the cultists to expose themselves.
They were promptly cut down, with some fancy shooting by Brother Kursk with his heavy bolter to down the final cultists.
For their accomplishments, SGT Morantor and Brothers Hardbeef and Narkus were promoted to veteran status.
Killboard (all cultists):
SGT Andronicus: 3
Gaius: 3
Charred Docken: 4
Lalkurti Vanas: 0
Darman Malus: 3
SGT Morantor: 1
Slab Hardbeef: 0
Paulus Scarabeus: 1
Dimitri Kursk: 3
Narkus: 2

Of the final skirmish, we have not yet received the report, save a single battle image:

On discovering that most soldiers during the American Civil War were dying of disease rather than gunshots, he turned his mind to, rather than providing better sanitary conditions and medical care for troops, creating a machine to make sure they got shot faster.

JULY 20TH 1969 - The day the entire world was looking up
It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

"Ha, these Emperor-blessed shells make a fine mess of those pathetic treacherous cultists!"
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."
Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Re: Let's Play: Chaos Gate
Bros, it is really hard to teabag these dudes when you gib them like that. I mean, it is totally rad and all, but how will we teabag them? How?
SDNet: Unbelievable levels of pedantry that you can't find anywhere else on the Internet!

"Bro, why teabag them? Then their Chaos taint may infect your Brotesticles, and we'd be forced to remove them by Bolter fire."
