Wow this is all great fellas, but I have no idea what you are talking about.

I am having a problem though.

Speaking of BIOS, I got this message: The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

o Windows cannot be installed on this computer with the current system BIOS version. Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS update, install the update, and then start Windows installation again. OEM Name: Dell Inc.; OEM Model: XPS M1530 ; BIOS Version: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07; BIOS Date: 20080124000000.000000+000

What the fuck over? I went to Dell and can't find squat. What does this mean?

Also, here is my system info. I don't see where it says if I'm 32 or 64.

System Type - x86 Based PC

That means you're 32-Bit. As if it all wasn't confusing enough, x86 means 32-Bit. Forget about it. Did you get the 32 bit version or the 64 bit? You want the 32 bit one since you're upgrading from 32-bit Vista.

Anyway, that error seems to want you to install the driver for your BIOS - that's something on your computer's motherboard. Should be this. Do the "download files to desktop" and "install from Windows environment" instructions on that page. Let me warn you - flashing your BIOS can cause severe problems if you got the wrong version, so if you don't trust the creepy guy with the low post count, let someone else confirm. I dislike flashing my own BIOS and refuse to do it unless absolutely necessary.

Those other two are arguing about some minor shit where they nearly agree with each other, but one or both sides needs to be the TRUEWORDSOFJUSTICEMANGUY.

Oh, that's not the newest version for your BIOS driver. This is. Either probably works, but the A12 is newer.

Terralthra wrote:Are you sure you know the difference between "Windows 7" and "BIOS"? Because one of these things controls how much system memory gets assigned to the graphics card, and one does not.
The BIOS does not control how much memory the graphics card grabs, but the firmware inside the graphics card and the gfx card driver. Technically Windows can deny the driver the requested address space, but that generally causes crashes.

Client 32 Bits Windows by it's nature can only see 2^32 bytes of virtual address space. This means every that uses memory windows to communicate (ie everything using DMA) reduces the total amount of memory Windows can address(since the kernel internally uses 32bit virtual addressing). In addition Windows clients OS have restrictions where it will reject any physical address space over 2^32 due to compatibility, because Nivdia fucking shit drivers shat it's pants when passed a legitmate 36 bit physical address space pointer.

Note; 32bit x86 CPUs since the p4 or so can actually do 36 bit addressing(PAE mode, required to use the No eXecute bit). Most 64bit x86 cpus only support 48 bit addressing(with expansion via revisions upto 52bits) of physical address space, and starting at 40bits or 48bits of virtual addres space(expandable to the full 64bits).

You also need to install Service Pack 1 for Vista, your build ID indicates no service packs.

Yeah, I am on that now. This is a pain. Doing a manual install now, because my Windows Updater doesn't even say I need it, nor does it locate it. I tried fixing that problem already and nothing.

Okay, okay, okay. Skip everything you're doing and just download this:

http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net ... -65733.iso

That's a standalone copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit direct from Microsoft. Just burn that to a blank DVD and install it from there. If you need help with any part of that, don't hesitate to ask.

Hey look, 3454 GB of RAM, on a 32-bit Vista install with 4GB installed.
That's misleading. While 32-bit Windows will recognize that you have over 3GB of RAM you won't be able to actually use it.

Yes, which is why Havok (or anyone) should use 64-bit even if they have less then 3.5gb of ram.

Unless his sound card doesn't have 64-bit drivers. Congratulations, Havok, you have 4 GB of memory but you can't play games, listen to music, watch movies, or surf YouTube!

Which is kinda what I said at the beginning - he should use 64, if all his hardware supports it.

Virtually all sound hardware in common use has some sort of 64-bit driver, even if a basic one out-of-the-box.

Well I still have no idea what this all means, however...

As I type from my wife's laptop I gleefully report that in the process of downloading SP1, it appears to get stuck at the exact same point every time.

!! 0xc0190036 !! 5182/96329 (ehdrop.dll)

It just sits there mildly flickering across it... Is there a way to get back to windows and skip this or am I fucked? Is this my punshment for not liking Firefly and Dr Who?

So question... If I just down load the disc that Dom put up (thank you) I can skip all this and just do the clean install? I would just be losing all my personal files and programs correct?

OK, last question guys, and I REALLY do appreciate the help, thank you, is there a way I can bypass the install of SP1 to get in to my computer to save a few files? And do I need to change the boot order to make my disc drive first so it doesn't keep trying to install the SP when I turn it on?

Alright, that is two questions.

1. Try starting in safe mode by tapping the f8 key.

2. Most computers are set that way from the factory but if your's isn't then you may need to hit esc or f10 when the computer starts up to get to the boot menu. I'm not sure exactly which key it is on your computer.

It may also be DEL, F2 or F8. Basically, look at the boot screen for a Boot menu key. If you can't find it, you'll have to go into the BIOS and adjust the boot order manually.

OK sorry, one more dumbass (me) question. How do I make the disc? Do I simply burn the file like I would with music or is there some special way? And also, I just use my product key that I got from MS to activate the program yeah?

1. You need a program that can burn disk images. ImgBurn works fine.

2. Where did you purchase that copy of Windows from?

Thank you, I will download that. And straight from Microsoft. Their online store.

ISOs can be burned by Windows, too, since Vista, at least, with the ISOBurner PowerToy, free from MS.

Great! Oh, and you should probably download Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, plugs neatly into Win7, and is generally liked by users.
