Star Trek: Infinite Space

Post by Iroscato »

So, anyone heard of its imminent arrival? Anyone thinking of signing up to it 'pon release?

I sure as tooting heck will be- this is like all my Trekmasses come at once. For those not in the know, ST:IS is a 3D, free to play browser based MMO, set in the DS9 period, coming in the summer. Those words alone should start the other trekkies around here wanking like an angry orchestra ;)

Hopefully, they won't screw this one up...

Looking at the site...
It looks like the same engine as the BSG game?
Also, the ship combat looks like a top down iso view... could be interesting :wtf:

I don't know much about BSG online, but ST:IS uses Unity3D to give it those schweet graphics.
The camera might be adjustable, but it reminds me of a 3D version of Vex Xiang's Flashtrek series. Which is awesome.

For those who will be playing it, I'll use the name Captain Spiro.

Same here. I will check it out but I am not too thrilled about the "MMO" aspect.

What genre are you into more, Sarevok?

Bridgecommander or Starfleet Command style games. They are lot more fun than boring games like that BSG mmo.

I'll check it out as long as I can do some empire-building. Preferably over the corpse of the Federation.

According to the website your limited to Federation and Klingon ships and is taking place in the period after season 3 of DS9 so technically the Klingon attack on DS9 and the dissolution of the Khitomer Accords would allow you to fire on Feddie ships but it will depend on how close it stays to the main storyline.

I'd rather join the Dominion/Romulans myself, presumably that will come out later as paid content.

...what is Paramount thinking? They already have one mediocre Star Trek mmo barely hanging on, and their solution is to release another, even worse Star Trek mmo which appears to have the same features list?

Bit early to pass judgement, don't you think? It doesn't come out for a few months at least... Although if a free Star Trek MMO ends up being as good or worse than a pay-to-play one I will laugh my tits off. And I'm definately playing as Federation, [trollbait]the UFP is awesome no matter what anyone says![/trollbait]

Problem is with the MMO part. No one has done a good spaceship combat or even a good combat game in MMO form yet. People who love MMOs may like this.

But what about those like me for example ? Who just want to setup a ship vs ship scenario from the TV shows and play it through ? Or just challenging someone in a BoP vs Sovereign match ? There was a lot of skill involved in online Bridgecommander and the game had a plenty of depth to it. Back in the day I could take down newer players flying Sovereigns in a Bird of Prey. I even killed Ambassadors with shuttles. 8)

I am not sure if a MMO could produce that level of exciting combat gameplay. The best spaceship MMO I saw was EVE and even there combat was dull, clicking affairs. The nBSG MMO was so dull I had more fun playing Wing Commander 1 via Dosbox.

This game would totally have to reinvent was is accepted as MMO convention to produce the same feel as the older trek games. I think it is unlikely the developers will do that for such a small project.

Pirate Galaxy is (was) a pretty good space MMO that has (had) excellent PVP battles. They totally messed the PVP system up though, along with the entire game. I think if ST:IS can make the combat fast paced, streamlined and rewarding, then it'll be a winner. Hard to achieve, but if the gameplay is half as good as the graphics, I'm sold.

Meh. My only request for space MMOs is the ability to glass planets that annoy me, even a little.
