Yeah, but the trailer that we've seen has the president looking and sounding a lot more like Nixon than Truman.

And yes I too am hoping that this is the impetus for the establishment of UNIT, as that would be a great way to tie back into the old series' continuity.

Plus there's the whole bit with the tape recording the phone conversation, implying that this is one of Nixon's "missing tapes".

Wasn't UNIT supposed to established after an old series episode called 'Invasion', upon suggestion of the Brigadier? It seems to me to be a British/European organization in source.

The Brigadier (a Colonel at the time) got the idea after "Web of Fire" IIRC, he was promoted Brigadier and placed in charge of the British contingent of UNIT by the episode "The Invasion" which was set 4 (I think?) years later.

That same episode refers to numerous UNIt stations worldwide, according to Sergeant Waters (he specifically refers to Geneva, New York, Rome (I think) and Beijing or Hong Kong), it's been a while since I saw that one so dont take that as fact. I think I'm gonna watch it again though, it's one of my favourites.

It's not based on the Roswell event, per se. This is set around the time of Apollo, given the US astronauts' outfits.


Was watching the Invasion recently, there's no mention in that of the Brigadier being the founder of UNIT, though the events of Web of Fear are referenced I don't think they're specifically the only case. Nothing to exclude a tie-in. Obviously I've not seen Web of Fear pt 6.

I thought that the events of "Remembrance of the Daleks" were the impetus for the establishment of UNIT.

Was perhaps one of them, after the report by GCpn Gilmore and perhaps some recommendations from the British Rocket Group (referenced in the episode) circulated to Whitehall. Also the WOTAN incident and of course the Yeti Underground incident participated in by then-Col. Lethbridge-Stewart.

Unlikely, since we are seeing the Doctor's personal chronology, during which history changes. From the Doctor's perspective, UNIT was formed before "Remembrance," in the same way that "Dalek" happened before "Stolen Earth," which is why nobody recognized the dalek. Perhaps the events of "Dalek" were actually erased or very significantly changed, and only the Doctor, Rose, and the guy they took to the future remember the original version of events. This phenomenon might also explain why the Doctor worked for the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, yet Martha knew only the Unified Intelligence Taskforce.

Yep, he was about to do a sci-fi convention when he got a call asking if he wants to have a role in an episode. I forget which con that was but they even told him to "Go! Go! Do it! We'll be fine."

It'll be remarkable when he says that 70s Washington compares with the Citadel on Gallifrey, or Kaalann, City of the Daleks or any other advanced planet in terms of power, but as regards Earth at the time, it's a perfectly reasonable statement.

As for 'Tell the President he won't be turning this into a war' well, that was the woman who was supposed to herald "Britain's Golden Age" and presumably restore Britain to a preeminent state on the world stage. She's got a multi-kiloton space-raygun-thing concealed under London at that point, and goons running around with particle guns, that's fairly obviously game-changing stuff.

Given the portrayals of the Citadel in stories written by Robert Holmes, being full of corruption and decadence, that might not be that remarkable
