Avatar size
I was figuring that our avatar size could use another 2kb of allowed space, I don't think it would affectperformance at all, I was a modem user and on SB they have a 15kb limit and I had no problems loading pages, I believe this could help alot.
My current avatar that I wish to upload maxes out at 7.5kb and I cannot get it down to 6kb without making it look like shit.

No, it's 6kbTed wrote:Uh, isn't it already at 8k?
And 100x100?
The size doesn't matter as much to me, it's impossible for me to have 100x100 avatars and stay in the size limit, without resorting to some real shitty qualty.

It would be nice. Maybe it should be one of the benefits of becoming a donater to SD.net.

Nay, because once the room runs out old posts will have to be deleted. Which means people with over 5000 posts will watch their counts plummet while current Younglings and Padawans won't have that effect.
It effects both the aesthetics and heirarchy of the board. The rules for heirarchy are as follows
Top of the ladder- The Esteemed Owner
Next- Women and Mods
Next to Next- Post count.
Seeing as how I am not a woman nor a mod my post count is the only thing that separates me from the constant influx of new users who have various intentions.
So, yeah, nay

How the devil do you people get such detailed AND fairly large Avatars. I had to tweak mine with photshop and shrink it down and still loose detail, and its a simpler design!

Several points of note:
1) The size of the posts on the server is unaffected by the avatar size. However, the daily bandwidth is definitely affected, and we're already pushing a lot of bandwidth.
2) GIF images are always big because GIF is a lossless image format. People only use it because it allows image-flipping, ie- animated images. Its downsides are size, a ridiculous intellectual property situation, and the fact that it's limited to 8-bit images.
3) JPG images compress far smaller than GIF images and the compression is tunable. However, JPG is a lossy image format and can create visual artifacts. They are rarely objectionable; my own avatar is compressed with JPG all the way down to 2.5kB and still looks good.
4) PNG is a newer format which seems to produce fewer compression artifacts than GIF and has tunable compression as well. However, its images are bigger than JPG images.

Microsoft products also vomit every time you wave a PNG at them, although the support's been getting somewhat better recently.Darth Wong wrote:4) PNG is a newer format which seems to produce fewer compression artifacts than GIF and has tunable compression as well. I would be using a PNG for my sig, but there are still people here who use Nutscrape 4 and Internet Exploder 4...

6kb is fine. I think animated avatars are irritating anyway.
