MISSISSIPPI: 46% Of Polled Republicans Would Make Interracial Marriage Illegal
Public Policy Polling asked self-identified Mississippi Republicans how they feel (PDF)about interracial marriage. And 74% of those who'd like to ban interracial marriage also have a "favorable view" of Sarah Palin.
Couldn't fit the entire title in, but it's close enough.

Okay, this is ridiculous. I know the Republicans are a bit loony but the ones in the southern US seem to be a special brand of crazy. Interracial marriage? Wasn't that made legal over sixty years ago?!

Nope. In Alabama it was decriminalized only in 2001 and even then 40% of those who voted opposed the decriminalization.
Of course, that statute was a dead letter in any case since any attempt at enforcing it would have gotten steamrollered in the courts as a violation of the federal constitution.

Oh. I'm a little... well, I'm trying to put this into perspective. How does a country progress so much and so fast - the US has been a driver on many fronts since the last century - with a non-insignificant amount of backward, bigoted and hateful people?

There is also the possibility that many of this 46% are stupid rather than racist. I would not be surprised if many of the people who responded did not understand the question.

I find that extremely difficult to believe. It is a very simple question.

...i see NO WAY to confuse the two. Interracial sounds nothing like "gay" or "same sex" or anything else you might call the marriage between two people of the same gender.
It is way more likely that those are just ignorant bible-thumpers (and therefore inherently racist, since the bible is racist, so taking it literal will lead to racism) who think that interracial marriage is wrong (as "the good book" says) and who think that everything they think to be wrong should be illegal.
Which would incidentally be the same logic why they are against same-sex marriage: "I don't like it/find it disgusting, so it should be illegal"/"My religions says so it's wrong and gives me the right to dictate how others should live".

Yeah, that 14% that are "unsure", I'd be willing to bet that more than a few of them wanted to answer positive but weren't brave enough to admit it. (or whatever the reason was) I'd go so far as to guess that it's enough to push the number up over 50% against.

How is possible to confuse interracial marriage with gay marriage? Just exactly where is this point of confusion that the less intelligent may get stuck on?
For example, a scientific ignorant person could confuse the colloquial and scientific uses of the word "theory". The point of confusion is that there are different definitions depending on the context for the same word. I simply don't see that above.

Well, you can often find state-laws still on the books when it has been declared illegal on a federal level. It can be just because removing a law takes a bit of effort and no one bothers because the law has no effect anyway. Or it can be because removing the law would be a bad political move.
The USA is not the only country where this can happen, some states in Germany still had death penalty laws on the books at the beginning of the 21st century, they were however completely inapplicable because the german constitution explicitly forbids the death penalty, and did so since 1949. That doesn't automatically mean that those german state legislatures approved of the death penalty.
Similarly, just having a law against racial discrimination that is for all practical purposes nonexistent doesn't mean that the state legislature approves of that law on it's own.
That has nothing to do with this poll, which really can only be explained by rampant racism.

Spiro: I can't speak for him but from what I gather he's more or less on a sabbatical of indefinite length from the board for (presumably) personal reasons. He's still moderately active on Facebook.
Regarding topic: it's not uncommon for laws to stay on the books even if they're technically invalid by the constitution or whatever. Some places just don't really care enough to make the token gesture of changing them.
The whole 46% against interracial marriage is unsurprising. I imagine you might see similar numbers across much of the Deep South, and even higher if you brought up gay marriage. It's interesting to speculate about why the South is different, but it goes back a ways, even before the Civil War and Reconstruction, which I blame in part for the South's lacking in some areas. If the Civil War and Reconstruction hadn't been as harsh upon the South, then we could have caught up to the rest of the country industrially and technologically, perhaps following along ideologically. It doesn't help that the Southern states had/still have a primarily agricultural focus as opposed to industrial. However, I don't know enough about that topic to really say more, so I'll leave it at that...

Anti-miscegenation laws were ruled unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia in 1967. It just took thirty plus years for South Carolina and Alabama to remove the laws from the books.

I remember in a civil rights documentary a civil rights activist said that when it came to segregation and racism missisippi was a whole new level compared even to the rest of the south. as an american i don't find this too shocking.

Given that the rest of us are not fucked up, while the South most certainly is, I find it a compelling argument that Sherman didn't burn enough. I don't see how you can reasonably blame the current situation on generations-old harshness in the South. The culture is just backwards and fucked up and we didn't do enough to blow it up.

As noted - the case Loving v. Virginia in 1967 determined all racial restrictions on marriage in the US were unconstitutional. That had the effect of invalidating any state laws to the contrary, but most states didn't bother to go through the trouble of removing the invalid laws.
Interracial marriage was decriminalized in 1967, even if some states are still tidying up their lists of laws.

Mississippi is nowhere near the industrial areas that made the US the world power it was and largely still is. Those are all in the north east of the country and the west. Mississippi is just a place the US economy uses to barge out grain to the world market. It doesn't even have many rail bridges on the Mississippi river because the industrial age just built around its stupidity.
