I still don't particularly like the design, but those sure are some sweet pictures of a design I don't particularly like. :D I may not approve of what they're pictures of, but that doesn't change the fact that they're beautiful. That's some great art.

I can't take much of the credit. Most of the work is done by Flaming Pear plug-ins ;)

For what it's worth, Drexler has it that the J is huge, around two miles long. So that lineage probably needs to show them getting bigger.

Interviews are out detailing what's going on with the contest judging:

http://www.justin.tv/jupiterbroadcasting/b/283130264
Skip to 8 minutes and 22 minutes.

Highlights:
  • CBS isn't happy with any of the entries.
  • Biggest thing cryptic is struggling with is "there is no consensus on who should win. Everyone has their favorite ship but there is no clear, obvious winner." This is contradicted by the second interview which states that they have a design selected that they are pushing on CBS.
  • Hope to be able to announce something in the next week.
  • The winning design will be considered canon by CBS. This is also part of the hold-up as they are being very particular about the selection.
  • Many of the entries have "the wrong number of nacelles" or "a different kind of configuration" than what they believe the fans will accept as a new, canonical Enterprise.
  • Cannot wait to get some of the "awesome, awesome ship designs" that are nevertheless "just not an Enterprise" into the game, suggesting that submissions other than the one ultimately chosen as the new Enterprise may be used as well.
  • Hope to announce the 25 top prize winners, top 4 and, presumably, the grand prize winner within the next week.
  • Lots of emails going back and forth "all day long" to determine those winners.
"a different kind of configuration" sounds like mine, so I'm now rather skeptical about my chances.

I'm not necessarily so sure - I may be reading a bit too much British understatement into that statement, but I feel like they're describing something a little more radical than your design, which gives me a lot of good Excelsior-style vibes.

Still keeping my fingers crossed. I'd love to see this win.

Color me slightly frustrated, but they make a contest for folks to design the next Enterprise and leave it to the fans to use their own creativity in deciding how it should look, and then they throw something of a hissy-fit because the fans' creativity doesn't match what they already wanted. Class act these bunch are. We'll see how things turn out, I suppose.

Almost all the other competitive entries have something in common in that they go saucer-> neck-> engineering-> pylons-> nacelles, as does every other Enterprise except the NX-01 and the J.

Mine goes saucer-> neck/pylons-> engineering/nacelles. That's why I think "a different kind of configuration" may refer to mine, but I've been thinking, and I wouldn't go back and design her differently if I could. This is the ship I wanted to make. The judges decision won't change that, and that makes me feel okay.

If I were to pitch my design to CBS, I would say this:
The ideal “Next Enterprise” is both unique and recognizable, and should look like the next logical step into the Star Trek future.

An Enterprise is composed of a saucer, an ellipsoid, and two cylinders connected by struts.

Over Star Trek’s history, circles have become ovals, first wider now longer, and the individual components have begun to merge.

The “Next Enterprise” should continue this trend. Her saucer should be stretched further forward than her predecessor’s, and her components should be more integrated.

I believe my design best meets these qualifications. Thank you for your consideration.
So if anyone at CBS happens to be listening... ;)

Is... CBS interested because they want to make a new show?

I've heard nothing that would indicate this. In fact I've heard Frakes and Shatner both pitched shows recently and were both turned down.

Johnathan Frakes, front-row on a new a Star Trek show? I'm not even ashamed to admit that I'd watch it.

EDIT:...ok maybe a little.

I admit that I like the concept of Riker. He was under utilized in the show and pussified later in TNG almost to a joke. But, I like the concept of Riker and on his own ship without the moral preening of Picard, would be interesting.

As a side note, any chance of new screen shots of the landing bay, I love what you did with it and wouldn't mind more images.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The shuttle bay is not actually as detailed as it looks. I spent a lot of time in Photoshop on it. You can see a landing sequence 3rd scene in the video though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEUf9UfRpSU
-and the schematic will give you a better sense of the interior of all three shuttle bays: http://crossovercomic.com/media/extras/ ... _lcars.jpg

If I win I might just have to model the interior as a separate scene ;)

How many phasers/torpedo launchers does this thing carry? In the video I count four sepperate phaser beams firing, and your schematic indicates multiple torpedo launchers both fore and aft, but beyond that...

And why photon torpedos (in the video)? I'd think it would carry Quantum torpedos.

She has 26 torpedo ports, (including the 4 aft facing ports on the saucer) but much of that is for redundancy, and to give her a 360 degree firing arc.

She has 4 phaser banks (3 with the saucer disconnected) but each can either divide fire toward multiple targets, or focus it on a single point. With phasers it's about coverage (again, I have a 360 degree firing arc) the power output is the same weather it's being separated or consolidated, but of course if you're dividing it against multiple opponents you loose efficiency because you're hitting multiple shields. I also believe a section of a single phaser bank can continue to fire even if other sections have been damaged, you just don't get the cumulative effect.

Point being that there is no reason to have more phaser banks than the minimum you need for complete firing arc coverage.

She carries both. In STO each has it's advantages and disadvantages. I happen to like the look of traditional photorps more.

Arg! Can't edit after, like, what, 2 min?

I was gonna add that in the video you only see the 2 phaser banks on the saucer firing. The rest are out of arc.
