Stargate Universe s2e16 "The Hunt"
Discussion thread for The Hunt.
Pretty much arbitrary poll options today, as I couldn't find any bad episodes with mention of hunting.

I'm curious if tonight's episode will reflect any character-related fallout from "Seziure". I'm also wary of the hostile, primal alien story in SG, but we'll see how they do.

I did think that the bit where Varro says he's killed nine of the beasts, looking really pleased, was... memorable. He's gonna be annoyed when someone tells him.

Maybe I misheard. I'll have to check the transcript when I see it.

Re: Stargate Universe s2e16 "The Hunt"
It was good to see more of Lt. James, always my favorite character, and not just because she's the best looking woman on the show. Greer going through a Teal'c 'Orpheus' phase, meh, but at least he got his mojo back. Varro and the other LA members helping out was nice to see. And seriously, SGC, you need to invest in some better gear for your troops than shitty light weight vests and nylon holsters. Seriously, I have better gear with better retention on my sidearm, and that's just for freaking airsoft!
And it was nice to see the bbq at the end.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. Rush, you're a dick, a funny dick, but still a dick. 'Hmm, there messing around with the Stasis Pods after I told them not to. Well, let's teach them a lesson.'

Rush was pretty funny this episode, it must be said. A funny asshole, as you say.

Re: Stargate Universe s2e16 "The Hunt"
These are my thoughts on episode sixteen:
- The full name for this episode should have been The Hunt: How Greer Got His Groove Back. Or Stargate Universe: The Hunt: How Greer Got His Groove Back TM (for that extra special colon goodness). Despite what Greer would have others (and himself) believe he's just as fallible as anyone else, what with his claustrophobia and that unfortunate experience during the surgery. It's always good to see some counterbalances to the gung-ho super-soldier vibe that he usually projects. And hurrah for James getting some meaningful lines!
- Good old Rush. You can trust him to be a bit of prick even when he's playing a prank on someone. But the tone was odd, to say they least. It's almost like the events of Seizure didn't even happen. I would have expected Eli and Rush to be more somber than they were. Maybe they're just coping in unique ways.
- I'll say this for the Lucian Alliance contribution- they get an A for effort. Varro, however, receives the gold star for surviving, securing his freedom and nearly hooking up with TJ. Poor random Lucian Alliance Female, we hardly knew ye. It is surprising that Reynolds survived, though. I expected him to be beast fodder, right from the get go. I guess sharing the same surname as a certain SG-3 commander gave him some character shielding.
- The design of that creature was highly reminiscent of Avatar's Thanator, right down to the six legs and disarmingly approachable nature.
- Where the hell is Camille? She's been absent for the past three episodes which is irregular for a regular. Yeah, that was awful. But still you'd think there would have been at least one opportunity for her to have some sort of role. Even Chloe's been there in a half-hearted, ultimately useless, jack of all trades sort of way (sitting around in the Chair room one week and failing to make anything of a stasis pod the next). I predict that Camille will have a part to play next week when this happens-
- Hey look, a genuine, unambiguously happy ending. That's a rarity. "Becker's BBQ" was a great touch.
Three out of five this week.

Yeah. His "Afraid Not" bit had me cracking up.NecronLord wrote:Rush was pretty funny this episode, it must be said. A funny asshole, as you say.
I'm kinda annoyed that all of the remaining Lucians were killed; it seemed like a cheap way to avoid exploring any new characters. Nice development for Varro, though.
Greer remains the most complex character and it's interesting to see him ala Teal'c in "Orpheus".

Re: Stargate Universe s2e16 "The Hunt"
The Lucians were dropping like flies! How come Superhunters can't hear a four hundred lb alligator thing approaching through underbrush?
Varro got some effective development here, he's a charismatic leader, and I don't think he has lived up to the potential presented during Intervention. There is a hell of a dynamic developing between him and Young, i feel like Young wants to like him but can't bring himself to because of what the Lucian's have done to Destiny so far, and because he is pretty much moving in on TJ.
Speaking of TJ, What The Fuck! She is consistently the most humbly competent character on the show! Was she building a fire to solder her radio back together? Who brought Macguyver to the party. She's an effective leader, she holds up well under pressure, and man, she was all read to stab the shit out of that Beast, until she realized that it was slowly realizing they were intelligent. that was a hell of an intuitive leap, it's like her in universe character got an advance copy of the script, because I might have deduced that it was intelligent, and i might even have deduced that it realized I was intelligent, but there's no way in hell I would have understood it wasn't going to bite my head off. It just Nom nom'ed half a dozen people sporting advanced technology, yet FIRE is where it draws the line? "Woah woah woah, I will chomp down on an industrialized society, but not if they can create fire..."
Which incidentally there is no indication that it could recognize in the first place. there was no evidence that the creature could recognize fire, so how contrived is it that it can recognize it? We better have some fanfic backstory explaining that this thing is some sort off advanced noble savage which has encountered life before, Like the Ewoks, or this won't sit well with me.
Now that we can fly the Destiny, the next time a survey team gets kidnapped, can we just pop the ship in orbit and fly a shuttle down? it seems kind of silly to just dick around on the ship, and why was there no army of Kinos doing areal surveillance?
I saw the stasis pod trick coming a mile away, but i am disappointed they didn't check the pods to see if anyone was in them or voice the possibility. I'm looking at YOU Before I Sleep...
Grear is developing along natural lines, I am pleased that the evidence of an impending de compensation proved to be true. Somehow he seems more badass staring down the giant Monster of Doom than he would have shooting it. Also, when that rainbow deer showed up, I pretty much HEARD sizzling meat.
The enrdy scientist schtick was completely done to death by Eli, and NOW it's turning into the Office, where we repeat romantic scenarios with virtually every possible combo. I think Rush was trying to give Vogler some sound advice, but he was just too slow.
You hate to see that in a grown man.
And Eli Learns A valuable Lesson About Patience.

Back to another load of mellow filler rubbish.
The LA folk get whacked so selectively its just hilariously sad. How come they didnt go looking for THOSE folks - oh right, they arent main cast so the dont have character shields. Incidentally, I find Stargates repeated attempts to paint off-worlders as being a hunter / tracker expert as being really annoying.
The creature - What a waste of time. Several of these things whacked off the team and have been running rings around them. They move really fast but somehow Varro manages to magically outwit nine of them and they get away. Did the beast somehow telepathically tell the others to leave them alone cause they can make fire ?
I would have liked to get a follow up or SOMETHING to last weeks episode. Instead its back to soap drama relationshipping and Rush being a dick for.... why ?
Cant believe this show went to the trouble of coughing up a stasis chamber rather than do something more interesting. Hey, how about fucking exploring the ship when they were traveling over a void for weeks ?
Oh no, NOW they are getting to it when Earth just botched relationship with an ally holding the key to reinforcements arriving.
Eli learns a vaulable lesson in patience - What ?
The only thing learned in this episode is Rush continues to be a loathsome character who uses people for personal gain and pulls shit like this when they step out of line. Personnally, I think Eli had the right idea by checking the boxes. A stasis chamber dosent accomplish much unless someone is thinking of going to sleep or someone is in the chamber.
I presume the chamber will 'randomly' come in handy at some point but checking boxes for spare parts, weapons etc. seems largely more useful. Although again, retarded they havent been checking them already. It will be massively funny if the parts the needed to raid their clone for were actually onboard the ship.

On a side note, I'm glad the pods' activation effect was the same as what we saw in SG-1/SGA. Nice continuity nod.

Next week's episode should be interesting, even if its a complete ripoff of an episode of DS9 where they find a planet inhabited by their own descendants thanks to a time loop.

I wonder if next week's planet is where everyone from the other Destiny went when they followed Telford in Twin Destinies.CaptainChewbacca wrote:Next week's episode should be interesting, even if its a complete ripoff of an episode of DS9 where they find a planet inhabited by their own descendants thanks to a time loop.

Without a doubt.Celador wrote:I wonder if next week's planet is where everyone from the other Destiny went when they followed Telford in Twin Destinies.CaptainChewbacca wrote:Next week's episode should be interesting, even if its a complete ripoff of an episode of DS9 where they find a planet inhabited by their own descendants thanks to a time loop.
On the one hand... ripping off DS9 isnt so bad when I actually liked that show AND it was decent enough.
On the other... this is just going to be more drama... oh look X and Y got together blah blah. I would prefer less soap drama relationshipping and more actual... activity on the 'Epic Journey to find God', 'Epic peril to Earth from the LA', 'EPIC exploration of the mighty Ancient Destiny' or 'Big Bad Drones / Aliens coming for us'
Of course, I could be wrong and they will have this incident occur completely randomly. A planet inhabited by their own descendants that has had plenty time to explore the Destiny would be more interesting or glean SOME useful knowledge. That said, I doubt it.

However, the wormhole had already been established with Earth. When it destabilized, did it merely jump to a nearby gate or is there something else going on?

Re: Stargate Universe s2e16 "The Hunt"
THAT would actually be really interesting, since it takes away the causality which was the issue in DS9's episode 'Children of Time'. If it destabilized or flipped around a solar flare somewhere, you could get massive distortions.Celador wrote:I wonder if next week's planet is where everyone from the other Destiny went when they followed Telford in Twin Destinies.

You mean like Eli expressing his anger at having to box Ginn as a result of Rush's carelessness by acting rebelliously? or were you looking more for Young stopping within range of an unknown gate to resupply, now that he has lost the chance of securing a supply line from Langara.I would have liked to get a follow up or SOMETHING to last weeks episode. That's true, why were they dicking around with figuring out how the bridge worked, and repairing spacesuits when they only had two, don't they have unlimited personell?Cant believe this show went to the trouble of coughing up a stasis chamber rather than do something more interesting. Hey, how about fucking exploring the ship when they were traveling over a void for weeks ?
Oh no, NOW they are getting to it when Earth just botched relationship with an ally holding the key to reinforcements arriving.
Yeah it's like it suddenly became apparent that more trained reinforcements weren't coming and they'd have to risk exploring the giant abandoned spaceship themselves or something.
It was hard to spot. At the beginning of the episode he had a devil may care attitude and didn't approve of Rush's ponderous approach to exploration. He only said so a couple times outright, so it would have been hard to miss, but I think I first noticed it when he was ransacking random crates, and pressing buttons on the stasis pod he just discovered even though he wasn't sure what they did.Eli learns a vaulable lesson in patience - What ?
he probably gained a lot having the only two scientists ready to work for him busy on a side quest. Although he did get a great opportunity to watch the other one make eyes and strike out, with the fourth as well as have her run through some equations he probably could have done himself, faster while she was jacked up on pain meds. He really went out of his way to give sage advice and teach life lessons all episode what a douche. The only thing learned in this episode is Rush continues to be a loathsome character who uses people for personal gain and pulls shit like this when they step out of line.
True, they rarely have fatal or life threatening injuries occurring in the middle of crises on Destiny, Rush probably would have LOVED the opportunity to shelf Volker so that his transplant could be conducted when they weren't trying to deal with Chloe's impersonation of Sybil, possibly by a doctor instead of a med tech who suspected she was hallucinating. Those pods would have been useless for storing prisoners too, you generally want to keep an eye on guys like Simeon or Chloe when she was possessed to really make sure they don't escape. Either way, one things for sure, they can NOT be used in the event life support fails again, or they run out of food or water, to reduce the number of people consuming resources.Personnally, I think Eli had the right idea by checking the boxes. A stasis chamber dosent accomplish much unless someone is thinking of going to sleep or someone is in the chamber.
Hilarious! Because why have two when you have one!I presume the chamber will 'randomly' come in handy at some point but checking boxes for spare parts, weapons etc. seems largely more useful.
