Maybie that's how they (ST) can perform their "Full stop" so quickly-despite rarely ever showing high acceleration?

I don't think so, if they never actually spent the energy needed to achieve the current velocity for the actual mass, suddenly getting the mass back to normal with the same energy (kinetic energy?) that was moving it when it was lower, would cause it to slow down, right? Something like that.

In an atmosphere, what slows you down is drag, which I think isn't related to mass but to surface area.
