I've taken the liberty of putting a spoiler tag on that one, even though the thread is spoilerific, that's a massive one.

And I look forward to it if true.

Spoiler
I have much more faith in Neil Gaiman doing it in an in-season episode than I do in RTD doing it in one of his crash bang whallop spectacular finales.

That said, the idea seems to be that they're some kind of techno ghosts, rather than real Time Lords, which might be interesting. All kinds of nerdy EU ideas spring to mind but I doubt it'll fit with them.

Not to give much away, in Surface Detail I thought the personality of the avatar representing the Falling Outside The Normal Moral Contraints, Demeisen, was in some ways very similar to Matt Smith's 11th Doctor. Banks could do a script adaption of The Also People.

Also the Silence is...
Spoiler
...that creepy, creepy alien in a business suit that was seen in the end of one of the first trailers; think a classic Roswell Grey but with a horribly melted face.
Anyway Season Six looks like a definite improvement over Season Five and perhaps the best season since Eccleston's; Five was rather enjoyable but I subjectively found it similar to most of the Tennant seasons. But Season Six seems to be more of a shake up and judging by how sumptuous "A Christmas Carol" was visually, they don't seem to have much of a budget problem this time round (though the story and acting is of course more important than props and CGI).

I was more pleasantly surprised by Steven Moffat's Sherlock, with the first season consisting of three feature length episodes of highly compressed story quality (instead of being stretched more thinly over a dozen episodes year in, year out) with the show having a lot in common with NuWho with a Doctor-ish Sherlock donning the same RAF coat worn by Captain Jack and Professor Moriarty bearing a strong similarity to John Simm's Master from "The Sound of Drums"-"Last of the Time Lords".

Having read it (it's good) I doubt he would. It does have motives that would make no sense in the Culture. Though the People are arguably more powerful than the Culture, and obviously based on them, the Culture would sort that out on their own no problem.

I know it's unlikely, but does anyone think that maybe the true identity of the Silence, or at least that voice that claimed to have killed hundreds of Time Lords, is actually the toclafane? Not the pretending cyborgs we saw, but the real toclafane? They were supposed to be a Time Lord bogeyman, a story to scare children. What if they are real and the reason the Time Lords tell scary stories of them is because they existed and killed Time Lords in the past?

No. :D
Steven Moffat has stated The Silence is a whole new enemy, and not a returning one. Plus, the Toclafane were shite. They looked like angry alien maltesers.
I think the voice belongs to The Silence (or maybe the leader of 'The SILENTS'?), and IIRC it's linked to last series' episode 'The Lodger'.

Personally, I really hope the Daleks aren't in this series at all. They're starting to make like the Borg and be affected by villian decay, so they should give them a break before they completely lose their edge. Good call they made splitting the series in two, though the 3 month wait in between is gonna send me madder than Davros.

I said the real toclafane NOT the bloody pretending cyborgs the Master used for his world domination. The real toclafane, if they actually exist, have never been seen on the show before, and are a Time Lord legend, a story, a myth meant to scare people. Which makes perfect sense if they were someone in ages past that killed hundreds of Time Lords.

I wish people would read my entire posts, not just the first few words. Even if I am wrong, I clearly wasn't talking about the human/cyborgs spheres.

The hundreds of time lords thing is probably not the Silence.

Whopping spoiler.
Spoiler
Specifically, it almost certainly comes from Gaiman's episode, which features disembodied voices of hundreds of time lords, and which was originally written for last season, and so would not feature the Silence as a direct antagonist.

Spoiler
That still leaves the question of what killed those Time Lords, which would probably have to be something that is both an enemy of them and have the clout to actually kill a bunch of them and survive retaliation. It could be something from the old series, or something entirely new like the Silence. Or maybe it could be a Time Lord bogeyman, right? Something that encounters a Time Lord (the Doctor) and wants him to fear it.

Woops, my bad. I think the real Toclafane are a bit too vague a villian to be in this series. But we shall see.

Actually, I think you are right. Someone sent me a bunch of Dr Who spoilers and it turns out that the voice that killed hundreds of Time Lords is not the Silents, the Silents are definitely not the Toclafane, and the voice in that Time Lord episode is -
Spoiler
Something called The House, and looks to be a one off episode villain.
So I was almost certainly wrong. And to top it off it looks like the new season will have loads and loads of River. Oh goody, my least favourite character gets massive screentime, yay. Well it still looks to be a pretty good season regardless.

I like River, I think she's a well-written and original character. Good actress too. Oh, and...

MASSIVE spoiler Spoiler
one of the 4 main characters (The Doctor, River, Amy and Rory) will apparantly die in the first series climax. Personally, I'm kinda hoping it's Amy. Karen Gillan, while being sexy as hell itself, just isn't really cut out for the job. Though I have a feeling it'll be River.

Personally I think its rather more likely to be Rory, he hardly appears in the season trailer. I hope it isn't but I think hes the most likely to go. Of course they may cheat us and have a quickly undone 'death' of any of the characters.

"The House?" Seriously? That's... not very threatening. It's also impossible to hear without thinking of a certain doctor.

Spoiler
I could see this going any which way. Rory does seem like the most likely one - but his death has already been done and there doesn't seem to be much of a point to retreading the same ground, even without him being wiped from time. Personally, I suspect we'll see River "killing" the Doctor, presumably in some kind of exceptional circumstances where he won't be able to regenerate. And then the subsequent season would be about bringing him back.
And just to get some non-spoiler text here... I am really annoyed that I won't be able to watch the new episodes until summer. I am seriously excited for this season, which contrasts curiously with last year, where I just didn't care. (I blame The End of Time for that.)

Yeah, The End of Time really had a 'let's finish this off quickly and messily' feel to it. And WHAT was that all about with the Master shooting plasma...and FLYING?! I think the producers did a great job from Ecclestone through Tennant, but they dropped the ball with Tennant's swansong.

Spoiler
Ah yes, the House, I've heard that too. Always reminds me of Lungbarrow's sapient time lord family estates, though I don't expect it to be related.
Spoiler
I don't expect it to be River. River's 'Death' has already been established in 'Silence in the Library/Forests of the Dead.' I doubt Moffat would retcon his own story.

Someone did jokingly suggest that the 'Good Man' that River kills is actually JFK. It'd be quite funny if it were - River is the shooter on the grassy knoll. That'd probably lack the drama of killing off one of the main cast though. Also, Red Dwarf already did that one didn't it?

Yeah they did, and as Lister rightly stated:

Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.
